Kaikuuu01

A table and Airplay-enabled sound system in one

Combining precision German engineering with beautiful Finnish design from their offices in Berlin and Helsinki, multinational studio Mela & Vanamo debuts with the stunning Kaikuuu01 table sound system. Designers Teemu Kurkela, Martti Mela and Päivi Meuronen created the Airplay compatible table with integrated speakers and radio, all encased in a spare, unassuming design.

Kaikuuu01-2.jpg

Constructed of Canadian maple by a specialized cabinetmaker in Berlin, the glass-topped table relies on an audio exciter pressed against the underside of the glass surface that effectively turns it into a loudspeaker—a technique Mela says is commonly used in showroom windows and sound art installations. The boxed wood frame both acts as a natural soundboard to amplify low frequency tones and keeps the electronic innards out of sight. The glass plain rests on a dampening cushion that eliminates the transfer of sound and vibrations to other objects placed on the table.

The Kaikuuu01 is controlled by an Apple Airplay-compatible device within the structure, and powered by an AC cord that runs out of sight through one leg. For more information on the acoustic table and pricing—which can be constructed in any requested size—contact Mela & Vanamo directly. The designers also have a headboard, light and alarm clock in the works.

Tangible Text

The Typo furniture collection brings typography to the third dimension in a humorous and articulate series of tables and chairs. Each monocoque structure is made of methacrylate, making it extremely resistant and durable as well as 100% recyclable. The clever collection looks great in a modern living room or as a learning tool in a child’s playroom!

The Hunger Table

Every year 15 million children die of hunger. 925 million people are malnourished. Every 3.6 seconds someone dies of hunger. These are just a few of the facts that inspired this thoughtful design, the Hunger Table. The multi-wood, pie chart table top represents these statistics so that those dining on it will be mindful of others starving around the world. It’s a tangible reminder of an easily overlooked problem and a great example of bringing awareness in a clever and impacting way.

Postable by Studio Toer

Eindhoven designers Studio Toer have created a table designed to fit through your letter box (+ movie).

Postable by Studio Toer

The Postable comprises a modular system of sheet-steel components that can be folded and bolted together once unpacked to make tables of various sizes.

Studio Toer wanted customers to be able to order it online without having to wait in for the delivery.

Here’s some more information from Studio Toer:

Toer presents Postable, the table that fits in your mailbox. Changes in customer-behavior and the online evolution of the retail industry were the motives to focus on the distribution aspect of new design. Toer explored the boundaries of logistics.

People furnish their living space. They used to gather their products locally. Later, they selected them locally and ordered online. Today people seem to be able to select their future possessions purely via the internet.

By inquiring and acquiring online, no customer-salesmen interaction is taking place any more. By delivering products in your mailbox there is no need to stay home to receive it . All human interaction in gathering furniture is unnecessary in the design of the Postable.

Postable is a stainless steel table design. It is a modular system. Each element fits within the outer dimensions of regular mail. A full-size dinner-table can easily be assembled from the content of one envelope.

Functional Flexability

Switch-It is an exploration into both flexible material and flexible functionality. At first glance it appears to be a classic floor lamp, but slide it down and the shade expands to a flat surface, transforming it into an occasional side table. It’s great conversation-starting piece that’s perfect for compact spaces.

Fascinatingly Simple – Part Tre!

The latest addition to the Rising series of furniture is this unique side table by the fantastic designer, Robert van Embricqs. Like the rest of the series, the final shape was achieved with strategically placed incisions to a single piece of wood. Functional, practical, and downright beautiful, it’s a great compliment to the other pieces in the series or great as a single accent.

Skeleton Inspired Furniture Series

The Spaceframe furniture series is based on the natural form of a vertebrate- a central “backbone” element defines the overall shape of the chair and branches out into a set of “ribs” that form the seat. Composed of CNC machine-cut plywood, the components are planar until combined, without screws or adhesive, into the final 3D cross-bracing structure.
