Isaora Tech Blazer and Vest

Japanese materials form an ultralight blazer and insulated vest for a tech-driven twist on the traditional sport coat

Isaora-blazer-1.jpg Isaora-blazer-2.jpg

Always one to challenge the norm in lifestyle and performance outerwear, NYC-based Isaora has once again taken a conventional piece and transformed it into something truly their own. With the 2.5-Layer Tech Blazer with removable Pertex Insulated Vest Isaora reworks the traditional sport coat for a tech-driven alternative. The unique construction of the combination piece calls on multiple innovative Japanese fabrics for an incredibly lightweight and highly waterproof foundation.

The blazer itself is constructed of a 8,000mm waterproof, breathable nylon that makes for a matte texture and color, loaning the blazer a uniquely futuristic look. In a good way. The underlying vest is made of a nearly transparent ultralight Pertex ripstop with PerimaLoft ONE 40g insulation and Aquaguard waterproof zippers—a simple design touch we’re always happy to see. The ultralight material and soft coloring makes the vest sleek enough to be worn on its own, while the modest bit of insulation is both impressively warm and comfortable.

Snapping together with more than a handful of snaps throughout the yoke and flank of each piece, the intriguing blazer and vest make for a definite statement piece that’s sure to ease the transition from winter to spring. The 2.5-Layer Tech Blazer and Pertex Insulated Vest are made in NYC with Japanese materials and are now available separately or together online from Isaora. The combo sells for $469 while the blazer and vest can be found individually for $289 and $199, respectively.

Decoster Concept

Mongolian sartorialists and military simplicity in an avant-garde collection

Decosterconcept1.jpg

Decoster Concept is a new design project created by Ziggy Chen (Chinese: Chen Xiang), a well-known fashion designer from Shanghai and founder of Decoster. Decoster Concept is a high level, conceptual label launched in the second half of 2011. The creative research behind the project, the attentive selection of fabrics and the limited number of pieces for each garment make Decoster Concept one of the most exclusive brands in China.

Decosterconcept2a.jpg Decosterconcept2b.jpg

In a new, dark, warehouse-like space in Beijing’s North Village, contemporary minimalism is mixed with different sources of inspiration: Inner-Mongolia’s desolate, windy grasslands and sartorial culture meet the austerity of military uniforms. Monks, herders, soldiers—all icons of a strict simplicity that breaks the often baroque standards of commonplace Chinese style. Colors disappear and give way to a game of light and darkness that recalls the concept of taoist duality and interdependency.

Decosterconcept3b.jpg Decosterconcept3a.jpg

At the same time, in the lines and carefree look of the garments lies the concept of traveling, wandering to remote lands and the inspiring power of vast empty places. This trend to simplicity and a specific inclination to fine craftsmanship seems to be the key elements of what could be the future of Chinese style, a style with ancient roots that has been covered by a century of turmoil and by decades of frenzied development.

Staka

An Icelandic duo’s first accessories collection references the nation’s most prolific saga with Viking Age materials

staka-1.jpg staka-2.jpg

Staka marks the first collection in an ongoing series between Icelandic product designers María Kristín Jónsdóttir and Bylgja Svansdóttir, comprising a curious mix of finely crafted unisex leather neck accessories. The aristocratic vibe of each piece stems from the design duo’s concept for the range, which draws inspiration from one of Iceland’s most notorious narratives, the Brennu-Njáls saga. Like all Icelandic sagas, the author remains anonymous, but the extensive storyline is centered around a familial feud which brings the idea of masculinity into question. The designers were also particularly taken by the tale’s leading lady, Hallgerður Langbrók, a femme fatale “who was notorious for her majestic appearance and temperament”, explains Svansdóttir.

Cut and molded from “Viking Age materials”, each piece is designed to tell a story about the wearer’s social status, but the beauty lies in their ambiguity. “We want each person to have the freedom to decide their own story and social status,” explains Svansdóttir. “The responses we’ve gotten so far have been very interesting, people guessing which pieces famous characters from The Icelandic Sagas would have worn, etc.”

Each equipped with their own portfolio of distinct works, the pair met while both exhibiting at Reykjavik’s Spark Design Space. Having bonded over a shared passion for unconventional jewelry and accessories design, they will continue to evolve the Staka line together, adding to the exciting range of unusual statement pieces.

Staka 2012 is available in limited supply at 38 þrep in Reykjavik, which stocks an equally exciting inventory of fashion and design goods.

Ursa Major

Vermont-made natural skincare for men

Ursa-Major-1.jpg Ursa-Major-2.jpg Ursa-Major-3.jpg

Made among the Green Mountains of Vermont, Ursa Major skin care launched in late 2010 to provide men with a healthy and effective alternative to chemical-laden products. By favoring organic over synthetic, Ursa Major promotes a “super natural” regimen of face wash, toner and shaving cream, and a newly created fortifying face balm to be released in the coming weeks.

Each product in the line blends a variety of essential oils ranging from aloe, lemon and carrot to bamboo and cedar that come together with a pleasant, mild fragrance. We were keen to give the new Fortifying Face Balm a try—after using it we found the lightweight, non-greasy balm absorbs quickly leaving nothing but a refreshing and slightly firming feeling. “The vast majority of men’s after-shave lotions/moisturizers out there contain irritating and sometimes unhealthy synthetic chemicals,” says founder Oliver Sweatman. “Fewer than 1% are 100% natural, which we feel is especially important for a leave-on product that ultimately penetrates your skin.” Designed to be the final step in a man’s daily routine, the face balm is full of potent natural actives that actually hydrate and protect skin, fight razor burn and minimize wrinkles. Besides the effectiveness of the product, we like the simple, recyclable packaging emblazoned with the bear constellation for which the brand is named.

Ursa Major’s Fortifying Face Balm will be available mid-April. Until then it is available for pre-order online for $36 alongside their entire line of men’s skin care products.
