Hot In The Hive: MAC Style Black Glimmerglass

imageGet ready, makeup mavens — black lipstick is back with a vengeance, and not just because Halloween is around the corner. But forget the waxy opaque gothic-girl look of the ’80s. This time, thanks to MAC’s new Style Black collection, black lips are creamy and glossy and even multi-faceted with gold and pink shimmer. Reminiscent of a glittery oil-slick, MAC Glimmerglass is definitely daring, but undoubtedly wearable for those intrigued by the resurgence of the blacked-out pucker trend. Opt for Blackware, the shiny all-black shade if you’re down to go all out, or try its more sheer pearly counterparts, Bling Black and Blackfire, if you’re looking for a slightly more subtle stepping stone to the dark side!

Price: $18

Halloween Costume Pieces And Accessories You Can Actually Wear Again!

imageIn your quest for the ultimate Halloween costume this year, you have a few options. For one, you can spend $60+ on a kitschy packaged costume that at least 10 other people will also be wearing… and chances are you’ll never touch it again. Secondly, you can go the clever route and piece together your own costume.. and after a dozen trips to a handful of stores and hundreds of dollars later, you’ll have the best Halloween ensemble ever… that you’ll probably never touch again. But the most appealing option? Door number 3: piece together your own super-cool costume from stylish pieces that you’ll actually wear way more than once! Even the most wearable trends are largely inspired by very costume-y themes: gladiator, biker, cowgirl, etc, so why not be resourceful and concoct up a costume while making a fashionable investment in the process? Channel a retro-chic flapper girl with a fringe miniskirt that can translate to a very modern night on the town, or don a sequin blazer for a cabaret/showgirl-type look that will be still be way “in” in the months to come. For more costume ideas featuring wardrobe pieces that will still be trendy even after the 31st, take a look at the slideshow!

Alexa Chung Loves House of Holland Tights

imageThe fancier, the better seems to be the trend for legwear these days. From crazy colors to hearts and polka dots and even floral print and bedazzled, tights are anything but basic black. House of Holland, most famous for their oversized logo slogan tees, has collaborated with the hosiery line Pretty Polly and came up with some crazy ones at a really great price (10 GBP or about 15 USD). They have already been spotted on it girl Alexa Chung and singer Little Boots. The kooky line of legwear comes in four “look at me” shades and five different designs that range from a sheer “alphabetights” motif to a cheeky take on stockings with the “mock stock.” The major hit from the line? The color blocked tights that are right off of Holland’s Pantone-inspired runway show. Going from opaque to sheer in bold color blocks, they’re available in basic black or blue, pink, green and lilac for the more adventurous. As if these could get any cooler, each pair comes in a little House of Holland paper coffee cup! Get them before they sell out at www.mytights.com or www.johnlewis.com.

Eco-Fashionistas Choose Chic Vintage Cashmere

imageCashmere, that downy layer of hair underneath a goat’s belly, is 1/16th the thickness of a human hair and eight times warmer than wool. Known as “the diamond fiber” in China, cashmere is super luxurious to the touch and oh-so-comfy to wear. But choosing vintage cashmere is the most responsible option since the demand for new cashmere fashion items is creating devastating effects on the environment. The enormous herds of goats grazing on China’s grasslands is creating barren dust bowls and unleashing devastating dust storms. This dust enters a highway of dirt and pollutants called the trans-Pacific transport and shows up here in North America. When you factor in these environmental costs, that new “affordable” cashmere sweater imported from China is not nearly as inexpensive as it seems. So when possible, choose vintage cashmere like the beautiful examples here. Just click the slideshow to see the selection.

Karmaloop Introduces The New Chris Habana Collection

imageCHRISHABANA’s new collection is now available at Karmaloop.com. One of my favorite jewelers, CHRISHABANA is serious about not taking things too seriously. The New York based jewelry line takes dark gothic elements (like crosses, skulls and spikes) and twists them around to become iconic, pop talismans. Since its debut in 2004, the designer himself has maintained a playful yet subversive approach to jewelry design. Favorites from the collection include The Spike Earrings, The Cross Triangle Earrings and The Cage Diamond Necklace. For the full collection, check out Karmaloop.com.

Lisa Salzer For Loft Presents The Pretty In Pink Bracelet

imageDesigner Lisa Salzer of Lulu Frost has designed a limited-edition bracelet available at LOFT stores during October. Five dollars from the sale of each bracelet benefits the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. This bracelet is designed with the vintage charm Salzer is known for, with multiple brass chains, one of which is wrapped with a silk fuchsia ribbon that ends in a bow. It is part of a capsule collection of jewelry designed by Salzer exclusively for LOFT – both in LOFT stores nationwide and online. Whether you wear it alone or layered with other jewelry for added drama, the bracelet offers an alternative to the conventional “think pink” ribbon. At $24.50, the bracelet is in keeping with LOFT’s spirit of to-the-minute style at affordable prices. Head over to Couture in the City for more style and beauty news!

Hot In The Hive: Jonathan Adler Mr. and Mrs. Muse Salt And Pepper Shakers

imageThese days, I’m getting invited to fewer wild parties and going to more subdued wedding showers and housewarming parties instead. Well… they seem more subdued until someone drinks one too many wine coolers and the rest is Facebook infamy. Anyway, the point of the story is that I’m no longer expected to bring a six-pack of cheap beer. Instead, I have to buy a real gift that they’ll actually want to use. That’s why I’ve been falling back on the creative genius of designer Jonathan Adler and buying all his cute creations. My latest find is the Mr. and Mrs. Muse salt and pepper shakers. These super adorable salt and pepper shakers is a great choice for a housewarming or hostess gift for any quirky friends you may have. As the night wanes and I have the urge to be a little immature, I can always bring the two shakers together and have them make kissy faces. Please, don’t tell me you didn’t think of that too!

Price: $48

CollegeCandy Presents 8 Under $20: Urban Outfitters!

imageI have a love/hate relationship with Urban Outfitters. I fall madly in love with everything on the racks, but hate how much they charge for shirts, skirts and dresses that usually fall apart after a few go-rounds in the washing machine. But then I fall in love again when those trendy little Urban employees stock the sale racks with all that gorgeous goodness. The Urban sale section might be one of the only ones I’m willing to elbow, shove and push my way through. They have some of the best deals around on some serious cuteness, much of it $19.99 or less! Here are some of my favorite pieces that are all under $20. The best part: you don’t even have to leave the comfort of your couch or tempt yourself with the rest of the overpriced items en route to the sale section. The dress on the left will look fantastic with some tights and a skinny belt around the middle. Mix it with an oversized cardi or sweater coat and you’ve got a super cute outfit for a night out. Pair the tunic on the right with some leggings, a cozy sweater and some knee boots and look put-together yet totally comfortable for class. Click over to our friends at College Candy for more!
