Bag Of The Week: The J.J. Winters Envelope Chain Bag

imageWhile the bag itself is worthy of a double-take, I have to admit that it was actually the name that initially caught my attention: the J.J. Winters Envelope Chain Bag in Silver Baby Turtle. Alright, it’s J.J. Winters, so you can likely surmise that it’s celeb-approved yet still somewhat affordable… while the terms “envelope” and “chain” are a little more obvious, seeing that it clearly boasts a fold-over flap and a chain shoulder strap. But Silver Baby Turtle? Okay, so it looks more like a disco mosaic than a sea creature if you ask me, but I guess I can see the inspiration. Either way, it’s totally shiny-chic in a way that’s not too flashy for daytime, and the metallic leather is a fun alternative to tired embellishments like studs and rhinestones. In any case, call it whatever you want — I’m diggin’ it!

Stylehive’s Stylescopes Know You’re Dreaming Of Spring!

imageWinter was fun for awhile, since the onset of colder weather meant that we could show off our cute boots and fun accessories like earmuffs and gloves — and let’s not forget that extensive scarf collection. Now, winter seems like a scorned lover who just won’t go away and the stars are sensing the restlessness and the daydreams of longer, warmer days ahead. While planet alignment and constellations can not bring spring here any faster, they can help you see what’s in store for your near future and help you find the best styles and colors that will prepare you for a sunnier and brighter season. Label Love: Canadian Designer Valerie Dumaine

imageIt’s always such a thrill looking for new brands (well, new to me) and feeling like I can dress more worldly than my usual J.Crew and Zara finds. I found Montreal-based designer Valerie Dumaine while browsing my favorite fashion blogs and instantly gravitated towards her clean and elegant designs. Trained in London and Berlin, she started her own line in 2004. Her company is still relatively young, so snap up her collection now! Those who love crazy prints and colors might not go crazy over her collections, but upon closer look you’ll see some pretty amazing details. One of my initial favorites was the Cairo Tulip Dress made out of crushed rayon for a great texture and additional dimension. Her separates are also great because I can’t think of any two pieces I can’t put together. Best of all, all her clothes are made right in Canada and available online and at over 50 stores across the world. Take a look at my slideshow to see my favorite looks from her line.

Recession Chic: Convertible Clothes For Endless Styling Options

imageHopefully you’ve got the memo already, but now’s the time to start shopping smarter. Whether you’re starting to recover from all that gift giving or need to save up that rainy day fund, we all can be more mindful of our spending. That doesn’t mean that we should only shop at our favorite fast fashion retailers though! If you are considering a major purchase like a luxe motorcycle jacket or a new LBD, think about finding some convertible variations for multiple styling options. I’m in love with the Suede Motorcycle Jacket with Detachable Sleeves by Alexander Wang and you can wear it in two ways, which means you save some money because you don’t have to buy a sleeveless leather jacket after all! Free People is always a good place to look for multi-function clothing like the Rip Tide Convertible Skirt which can be worn as a skirt or a dress (though leggings would be a good idea). For more convertible clothing options, take a peek at my slideshow!

Give Your Style A Sustainable Makeover And Resolve To Be Green In 2010!

imageOkay, so in the past you may have opted to take your car to the corner Starbucks instead of trekking the required block on-foot. You may have thrown a water bottle or two in the trash when there wasn’t a conveniently-placed recycle bin right next to it. You may have even sprayed a few dozen extra spritzes of aerosol hairspray when that stubborn cowlick just wouldn’t stay put this past New Year’s Eve. But it’s still only the start of the New Year, and it’s not too late to set a plan to revamp the way you treat Mother Earth! The truth is, being eco-conscious is a lot easier and more chic than its stereotype may lead you to presume. For example, you don’t need to turn to natural hippie waves and completely give up your blown-out hair — just replace your normal energy-eating dryer for an Eco-Air conserving one. And the next time you’re in need of a hot pair of jeans, look for a pair made from organic cotton — they’ll look just as great, but have your conscience feeling way better! Check the slideshow to see how you can style yourself sustainable in the year ahead!

Look Casually Chic In A Hoodie Dress!

imageFor many women, wearing a dress is always a good choice. Dresses are comfortable, easy to accessorize, and always help the wearer look that much more polished and put together. They’re decidedly feminine, no matter the style or detailing, and save time from having to find a top and bottom that matches and flatters. You still may be worried that dresses just aren’t your thing, and wearing one makes you feel a little too much like a girly-girl, and you’d give them more of a chance if only they were a little more your style. Your thoughts have been heard because dresses these days are getting just that! The addition of hoods was all it took to add the an extra little something, especially the larger, draped kind that almost shrouds you in an air of mystery and will definitely make people look twice. Hooded dresses are unique and trendy, but are still basic enough that you can add your own accessories and flair to make it a truly one of a kind look that is all your own. Plus, the hood adds extra coverage against the cold weather and looks just as good bare-legged with pumps, or in opaque tights and boots! Check out the slideshow to see some favorite hooded dresses and find one that matches who you are!

Hot In The Hive: Studded Whale Ring

imageThis rhinestone studded whale ring encompasses all that we want in a piece of jewelry. The shine and sparkle will undoubtedly catch your eyes while the whale shape is quite charming and delightful, with just the right amount of whimsical, offbeat appeal. Despite its large size, the ring is a versatile enough to wear daily (as a signature quirky piece, perhaps?), or as the focal piece at a more dressy affair. Let’s not forget about the amazing deal this ring really is too! At less than $12.00, we had to do a few double takes to make sure we weren’t reading the price incorrectly!

MJ Puts The Petal To The Metal With A New Messenger Bag

imageThis has got to be one of the sweetest handbags I’ve seen recently from Marc by Marc Jacobs. The Petal to the Metal leather satchel ($200 at Net-a-Porter) comes in a shade of tobacco called newsprint, yet its style shouts indulgent cupcake from Magnolia Bakery. Overall this is a charming bag because of its compact size. Clearly it is an example of the affordable whimsy and wit so clearly defined and redefined again each season at Marc by Marc Jacobs. The Petal to the Metal leather satchel is a pint-sized messenger bag adorned with a small bird on its front flap. The front flap is accentuated with a zipper detailing around the edge; although not functional, it adds an interesting texture and outlines the shape of the bag. Inside is a pouch compartment lined in an eighties-inspired geometric twill print. The closure is secured by a magnet on the outside and a small non-functional strap loops under the gold-toned dove. I am not sure why the purely aesthetic strap does not cross over the entire bag; it does dilute the look of the design a bit. The dove is embossed with a tiny circle so small you’ll need a magnifying glass to read the Marc by Marc Jacobs logo. The long strap and makes this messenger bag perfect for carrying only your most basic essentials. Overall I do like the look of this bag and it would make a perfect bag for a post-holiday trip abroad or a charming gift for aspiring fashionista teen. This whimsical bag is also the ideal accessory for adding a bit of eclectic fun to your casual weekend look. Pair with an oversized tee and/or blazer, skinny black leggings and some oxford flats.
