Nom&Ada

Casual leather sandals that aren’t your grandma’s comfort shoes
nomandada-1.jpg

Bi-continental shoe company Nom&Ada is named after its two founders: The “nomadic” Rie Sawai in Tokyo and the “adaptable” Kimy Andrade in Portland, OR. The two met while studying design at Parsons in NYC and remained close friends after graduating in 2004. Five years later they met halfway between their two homes in Hawaii, and when inspiration struck over iced Kona coffee they decided to embark on a joint venture.

The duo recently launched their website and e-Boutique with their debut shoe, the “holoholo” moccasin. In Hawaiian, holoholo translates to “leisurely journey”—an apt name for the comfortable, casual riff on the classic T-strap sandal. Constantly on the move, Sawai and Andrade say they’re inspired by their travels and nostalgia, and the crepe-soled sandals are perfect for airline travel, with a pair of tights, or for impromptu hikes on a sunny weekend after brunch.

Despite the great distance between the two business partners, Sawai and Andrade do their best to collaborate as much as possible. “The time difference definitely kills,” they said—they even answer e-mails jointly—”but it makes the times that we do get to work together in the same location that much more special.”

There are also advantages to having a close friend halfway around the world, saying “It adds different perspectives to our technical and creative process, and gives us an excuse to travel!” They chronicle their finds and inspirations on their blog, which they also write together. “Even though the majority of our conversation is business nowadays, we find a moment or two to catch up on girl talk,” they said.

The crepe-soled leather sandals are handmade in Japan and come in black, white and camel—with the camel available with both white and flamingo stitching. They sell online for $260.

Shoe of the Week – Joe’s Jeans Brenda II

imageJoe’s Jeans Brenda II redefines basics for summer 2011. We at StyleHive are loving the 70’s vibe. The 70’s introduced the world to disco, the bell-est of bell-bottoms, and Three’s Company.

Although that glorious sitcom is long gone, and hip hop has taken the place of disco, 70’s fashion has re-emerged on runways across the world. From pants to sunglasses to shoes, the streets are looking more and more like a background in Starsky and Hutch!

These shoes will fit in with all of the 70’s re-imaginings – flower child dresses, Levi 501 cut-offs, and, of course, the ubiquitous bell-bottoms. Not diggin’ the 70’s vibe? Rock these spectacular sandal with skinnies and sequins!

With the dark brown platform and light suede straps, you can wear them with almost any color to any occasion. Bonus – although they add a ton of height and make your legs look miles long, the rise from toe to heel isn’t that bad, which means you rock out all night!

Price – $185.00

Oat Shoes

Biodegradable sneakers with looks good enough to literally wear into the ground

OAT-tree.jpg

While sustainable shoes up until now tended to either look suited for Middle Earth or were limited to recyclable and repurposed options, Oat Shoes signals a welcome leap forward in the market with their cleanly-styled, fully biodegradable sneakers.

oat-blue.jpg oat-macaroni.jpg

Founder Christiaan Maats took on the seemingly-impossible challenge of designing and fabricating decomposable footwear as a continuation of his graduation project in product design. After over two years in development, the Amsterdam-based label finally introduced prototypes of its Virgin Collection, a brilliantly-conceived lineup of kicks constructed from hemp canvas, bio-cotton, cork and certified biodegradable plastic, earning the fledgling company second prize at the Green Fashion Awards last January.

oat-green.jpg oat-red.jpg

A pair of Oats can literally be buried in a garden (or tossed in a compost pile) after use, although that’s not likely to happen too immediately—versatile and laid-back, the subtly colorful soles will keep you looking fresh through seasons to come. Even more, hemp canvas is naturally antibacterial and a fantastic moisture-wicker, which also extends wearability.

The Virgin Collection’s four styles, two high tops and two-low tops, will be available for purchase this spring on the Oat Shoes website for €140-150.

Do Converse Chuck Taylors Ever Go Out of Style?

imageSeriously, do Converse Chuck Taylor shoes ever go out of style? They may not be on the cutting edge of fashion but they have certainly withstood the test of time. My dad wore them as a kid, I wore a pair in high school and now my two year old daughter is rockin’ a pair of pink lace-less Chucks.

A lot of fashion trends repeat themselves but how many just stick around forever? Chuck Taylors have even gotten better with time! More styles are available than ever before. From classic low tops and high tops to lace-less, double tongue, rhinestone studded and even design-your-own versions, there’s a pair of Chucks to match your personal style.
Teens love them and toddlers look irresistible in them. They are comfortable and relatively inexpensive. What€™s not to like?

A Fun Interview with Manolo Blahnik

imageRaised on a banana plantation in the Canary Islands, the exuberant Blahnik clacked onto the set of Sex & the City into Household-Name status on the heels of Carrie Bradshaw, and, at 68, works more today than he did 30 years ago.

For their February 2011 issue, HEMISPHERES snagged a fun interview with the personable – & hardworking! – shoe designer. Here are some highlights –

On toe cleavage –
‘I think it’s more exciting and sensual … Before me, there was no toe cleavage at all.’

On becoming a shoe designer –
‘Things happen by accident. But now I love what I do, and I can’t live without it.’

Shoe of the Week – Seychelles Hawk Wedge

imageIf we could only have one pair of shoes this season, we would cry and mourn the loss of our beloved collection of heels, boots and flats, but ultimately, we would probably settle on this lovely pair of wedges.

The soft grey leather is the perfect color to complement any outfit, while the wedge heel makes them easy to walk in. And did we mention how cute they are? The lace-up detail, the open toe – it’s like our favorite sandals and booties had babies together. And now that the price is just under $100? We’re in love.

Of course, that would be IF we actually had to choose just one pair of shoes. But obviously, we can’t live like that.

Rockassins

Furni taps decades-old craftsmanship to make limited-edition moccasins

gilesmoc1.jpg gilesmoc2.jpg

Fresh from Canada, Furni’s new moccasins bring an urban sensibility to the traditional footwear. To make the crepe-soled shoes, Furni looked to a 40-year-old, family-owned company. Known for the craftsmanship they put into their snowshoes, moccasins and other Indian handcrafts, the company is the perfect fit with Furni’s commitment to artisan techniques.

gilesmoc3.jpg

The resulting collaborative design is a men’s mid-height moccasin that hits at the ankle. Each caramel-colored shoe is made to order using the finest Brazilian leather in a Montreal workshop.

gilesmoc4.jpg gilesmoc5.jpg

The “Rockassins,” a limited edition, sell on a first come first serve basis at a cost of $98 per pair. Production begins 21 February 2010 and will ship to clients roughly three-five weeks later. Place your order on Furni’s site.

Ready For Spring With Rebecca Minkoff Shoes

imageIt’s been unusually warm this past week in San Francisco and it’s given me a huge taste of spring fever. Granted today is back to it’s windy and cold self, I still find myself vying for sandals and flats to enjoy the sunshine in.

Rebecca Minkoff, known for all her handbags has ventured into shoes this spring! My favorites are the Caroline ($250) with the hot back zipper, M.A.B. flats ($185) with almond leather panel at toe (just like her bags!), and the Foxy Cut-Out ($295).

All of the shoes are available now for pre-order.

Nat-2

Paris-inspired booties and an LED watch from a sixth-generation Berlin shoe brand
nat2-1.jpg

Known for inventing four-in-one and two-in-one zipper shoes, Munich’s Nat-2 shows a simpler side of shoe design with their new desert boot-inspired line created just for girls. The suede Marais booties, named after the Parisian neighborhood, combine classic French subtlety with a flexible fit.

At the helm of Nat-2 is creative director Sebastian Thies, whose extensive know-how is due in part to his family’s storied history as innovative shoemakers. Originally founded by “Ferdinand Fischer” in 1856, the company folded during WWII, but was resurrected by Ingeborg Thies, Sebastian’s grandfather and a Fischer by birth. The company was renamed Thies-Fischer KG in 1949 and now produces several brands alongside Nat-2.

nat2time1.jpg nat2time2.jpg

In addition to their new streamlined shoe, Nat-2 recently introduced “Time”—a collection of plastic watches that reflect the pared-down aesthetic of the more grown-up streetwear scene. The patented 42 LED scroll system that lights the entire watch face up as each minute passes strikes a balance between the “keep it fresh, keep it classy” style that Sebastian has curated over the last three years. Perfect for the quantum computer nerd, the watch comes in several different colors including olive and purple.

The Nat-2 Time and Marais sell from the Nat-2 online shop as well as from retailers around the world.
