The Teapot Redefined

It’s not at all what you imagine a teapot looking like, and that’s exactly what’s so cool about the Quattro! The vertical, rectangular design makes pouring and transporting a cinch thanks to its beautifully simple, yet highly functional handle that also acts as a base. Just tip it to poor, or reverse the base to the upwards position to carry it around!

BMW Unveils i3 Electric Car, ‘Designed for Sustainable Mobility’

When we learned that the “first purpose-built electric vehicle made primarily of carbon fiber” would make its global debut this week, we dispatched writer Nancy Lazarus to take the UnBeige hovercraft (powered by orange peels and recycled periodicals) downtown for the big reveal.

“BMW’s i3 has unique proportions for the urban environment and is being sold for the mega-city, but it’s not out of place on the freeway,” noted Adrian van Hooydonk, BMW Group’s global head of design during Monday’s New York launch. BMW simultaneously unveiled the car at events in London and Beijing. The brand is counting on stateside sales when the car becomes available next year, since The U.S. is the leading market for electric vehicles.

“From sketch to street, it’s innovative in every aspect, including the customer experience. The i3 was designed for sustainable mobility,” added BMW board member Norbert Reithofer. He said the car provides solutions for urban lifestyles, such as easy access, smaller turning radius and more interior space. BMW is also eager to overcome skepticism about driving electric cars, mainly charging issues.

Design of the i3 started from scratch five years ago, according to van Hooydonk. “We pushed the reset button on colors and materials. Our new aesthetic is called ‘next premium,’ and the design language maximizes the effect with fewer elements. We used some familiar features, like the kidney-shaped grille, but also many new elements.”

Wheels Of The Bus

Ok slight deviation, this time it’s the wheels of a cycle and the value proposition is of course technical! The Charging Clip integrates a battery pack that can harness energy from the moving spokes of a cycle. What you need to do is clip the device to the cycle spoke and let physics and engineering take over. The drill is simple; you ride your bike, tank up the device and then juice your phone. So very easy!

Totem Part Two

A new twist to the old Stackable Cup, this new Tilt Cup has a clipped edge that enhances drying. When you place the glass upside down, the water trickles and drains out through the gap created by the clipped edge. The tilted angle also enhances the weight balance so the cup can stand up by itself when overturned. I think this will work!

Feel the Click

The Feeling Mouse, designed specifically for the hearing impaired, appeals to the user’s tactile senses to emphasize the all-important “click” that’s crucial in operating the device. When the user presses down on the mouse, raised bumps slightly protrude through designated holes where the user’s fingers rest to signal the “click.” It’s a simple solution, but incredibly useful for those missing out on this subtle queue.

Color Markers of Adobe CS

I guess utopia for designers will be a place where they can sketch on paper using a pen that has built in tools of Color Markers, Tablets and Adobe CS. Not yet there, but relatively close, the PLUM concept is a pen that features a CMYK ink cartridge and is mixed with microfluidic technology (commonly used in medicine industry) to create a specific color that is desired. As you sketch, your drawing gets auto saved to a micro SD chip in the pen’s cap. Naturally, you hook up the cap to a computer and get editing on your design!

Select four different pen tip sizes: 0.3, 0.5, 3,7- mm size.
