A Hiker Must-have

As humans, we’re naturally inclined to think “that could never happen to me,” especially when it comes to getting lost! Despite our egos, emergency situations do happen so having the right safety equipment is key. Designed specifically for hiking, the Sound of Light whistle provides novice and expert hikers with an additional level of visible and audible protection. The super bright LED and ear-shattering whistle serve as a beacon for rescuers while a built-in compass helps hikers navigate their way out of danger.

Fun With Printed Food

By featuring innovative ways to cook food, Masterchef has really opened our palate to unique methods of cooking. Fitting in this stream is the Atomium 3D Food Printer. It uses molecular ingredients to construct food layer by layer. The device helps children prepare their own meals in a very creative way. Basically the printer detects what you draw for it and then dishes out a 3 D printed meal using molecular ingredients.

Atomium 3D Food Printer is an Electrolux Design Lab semifinalist.

If Google Goes Gamer

If there’s one company that can create an entirely new console to go up against the big 3 (Nintendo, Xbox, and PlayStation) it’s gotta be Google. Joseph Dumary’s Nexus Orbit concept console sheds light on how exactly the device might look and behave. Aesthetically, it’s inspired by contemporary architecture, but technologically you can expect it to include integration with Google Glasses, Google Play as well as access to Google’s amazing search, maps, video, and drive features. Check out the vid for more on Orbit!

Antler Illusion

Antlers are an iconic symbol that’ve been around since the age of the caveman & they aren’t going out of style anytime soon! Whether it’s a cardboard mount for the house or a wearable Alexander McQueen headpiece, we love a clever twist on the familiar fragment. Just like the Antler chair! From a side view, the outline of a stag’s rack is clearly visible, but from any other angle it looks like your average chair. From the woodsy cabin to the modern loft, its subtle aesthetic compliments a variety of interior styles.

Lucid Meets Leather

Who doesn’t love the idea of a transparent screen?! Many modern conceptual watch designs feature this interesting visual element, but few remember the age-old material that’s adorned wrists for centuries…. leather! The LIP watch applies modern transparent tech with a hand stitched leather band for a comfortable and familiar aesthetic that’s not limitingly futuristic.

Micro Grill

Micro is a portable microwave that doubles up as a grill as well. Hectic lifestyles, unhealthy eating habits and laziness has forced us to rethink how we use our kitchen appliances. A grill on the go is understandable, but have a portable microwave is a good innovation. At least we can have hot meals in the office while buried in work!

Sneak Peek: Volvo’s Concept Coupe

(Courtesy Volvo)

When Thomas Ingenlath decided last year to take the position of senior vice president of design at Volvo, he began asking anyone he encountered to describe Volvo cars in a single word. The prevailing response: “nice.” “Not iconic or cutting edge,” notes Ingenlath, who previously headed up the Volkswagen Design Center in Potsdam, Germany. His first design sets out to change all that. “This is how Volvos will taste from now on,” says Ingenlath of the Volvo Concept Coupe (pictured), a bold two-seater that will be launched in Frankfurt next week after a hush-hush sneak peek this week in Gothenburg, Sweden.

“The last few years, car design has become increasingly standardized…and too often defined by cluttered and overly complex design,” he explains. “While other brands try too hard to look luxurious and muscular, Volvo Cars will stand out as the calm, confident, and naturally powerful challenger.” With new proportions and a face full of design elements (a floating grill, cow horns in the lower front) that reference the classic Volvo P1800, the new coupe is the first in a series of three concept cars that will each represent the next generation of Volvo models, starting with the New Volvo XC90 that is due out next year. As for the jaw-dropping interior, with its luxe leather instrument panel and hand-carved wood inlays, credit goes to design director of interior, Robin Page, who joined Volvo earlier this year from Bentley.

Workout For A Clean Home

Orbita is an appliance that uses the energy created by body movement as energy source of the appliance. This gives you the liberty to spend more time on tasks that your enjoy rather than cleaning up the house. Although its not explained how, but the system syncs in such a way that while sweat it out in a workout, the energy expended by you can be used to do some cleaning by Orbita.

An interesting concept and is the 2013 Electrolux Design Lab semifinalist.

Flat Pack Pendant

Don’t be fooled by the VANITY pendant lamp’s name… because it’s not as fancy as it sounds, which is exactly its appeal. The angular, seemingly complex shape is actually a single sheet of felt material creatively folded to form a sharp-looking shade. Flat-pack ready and easy to transport or store, it’s an easy and efficient choice for a illuminating living spaces.

We encourage you to graffiti!

Psychologists have studied vandalism for years and found that boredom, peer pressure and revenge are often the cause. But it’s often overlooked that it’s also kinda fun! Just ask Banksy! This picture frame concept, Vadalijst, allows you to insert your favorite photos and vandalize them by doodling silly things with a whiteboard marker. Mustaches, monocles, capes and more… the options are endless!
