Distil Union’s Wally Case Review

We’re a big fan of Distil Union’s products and the Wally Case is no exception. Though it’s a Kickstarter project, I have no doubt they’ll reach their funding goals because this case is gorgeous. Made from premium leather attached to a thin plastic case for that shiny new iPhone 5s. The idea is to simplify your wallet. Slim that bad boy down to just three cards – your I.D., a debit card, and a public transit card. There’s enough tension to prevent your goodies from slipping out. There’s an integrated pull-tab to release the cards from their pocket. DO WANT!

Designer: Distil Union, Kickstarter page $40

The light at the end of the tunnel.

Glow is a low-cost, low-maintenance, and low-tech solution for providing efficient, effective lighting to the developing world. The device uses phosphorescent (glow-in-the-dark) powder, which absorbs environmental light and slowly releases it when dark. Modern phosphorescent powder has a lifespan of up to 10 years and a glow that can last up to 6 hours! UV light isn’t even required to power the glow!

Watch: Rich Brilliant Willing on Ideas, Collaboration, and Avoiding Fisticuffs

As the talented and exceedingly charming gentleman of Rich Brilliant Willing (a.k.a. Theo Richardson, Charles Brill, and Alexander Williams) head across the pond for the London Design Festival, which kicks off on Saturday, join them for a video interview produced by our friends at Design Within Reach. Click below to watch the trio discuss their design process —which only occasionally calls for consensual “duking it out,” their way with materials, and how their own decidedly 21st century aesthetic resonates with that of midcentury masters.

Pebble Watch Facelift

The “ttmm” collection of wristwatch apps was designed for specifically for smartwatches with 144×168 pixel screens such as Pebble and Kreyos. 15 different face options give the wearer a multitude of stylized options, each with its own puzzling way of displaying the time. Available in the Android Market, you can upload the collection directly via the Pebble app and keep your watch-face fresh all year round!

From Wine to Light

Nearly 200,000 wine barrels are retired each year in California. Although some end up as planters or firewood, many are destined for landfills. Designer Dale Rorabaugh decided to do something about that. His team rescues wine barrels from wineries that simply don’t have the space to keep them any longer. To give them new life, they repurpose the material into a practical, artistic table lamp each with an expressive and unique history.

A Lumberjack’s Wet Dream

One of my personal favs, Duffy London, explores macabre-chic with the latest additional to the Grimm Collection: the Woodsman Axe Table. Inspired by the Brothers Grimm fairy tale “Little Red Riding Hood,” the design fits USA-made hickory axes to a solid wood top available in walnut, oak or ash. Sure to be a conversation starter, the clever construction tells a story all its own! Perfect for the cozy cabin or your man cave.

2013 A’ Design Award Winners – A Quick Glimpse

I am a big fan of designers that are proactive in putting themselves out there in the spotlight. It takes a good dose of courage to put your work in front of an esteemed jury comprising of more than 40 members! I am talking about the A’ Design Award, a platform that not only recognizes commendable works but also works with the designers to get them their deserved fame!

Here is a look at Ten Innovative Designs from this year’s A’ Design Award winners, that our YD team curated. View all winners here; view all categories here.

This self-sufficient emergency structure is made of two structural steel frames enveloping a volume of plasterboard panels coated with high-resistance HDPE panels. Impromptu housing at its best!

Who would have thought that four blades and a rotating machine could be so sexy! Haiku’s three-dimensional curvature offers a vast improvement in performance over flat blades.

Expected iPhone 6

Is designer Heo Leo onto something? Not sure, but his analysis of recent redesigns by Apple has some weight to it. No wonder his iPhone 6 concept looks predictably surreal. Good job Leo!

Smoke Capturing Capsule

Much smaller than the average kitchen exhaust fan, what Nest lacks in size it makes up for in smart functionality. The oval-shaped fan hangs delicately over freestanding stoves without obtruding open space. The unit itself detects smoke with a sensor that triggers the vents to open and begin working, making it completely hands-free. The unique vent pattern is highly effective in absorbing smoke from 360° rather than only from directly below.
