Music, Typified.

Peep this series of posters which visualize musical genres using just one shape and one type apiece. While some manage to hit the mark, a few fall a tad short of their representational goals, if you will. For the complete series you know the drill.

Flying Junction

Add throwback style to walls with vintage subway signs

flyingjunction1.jpg flyingjunction2.jpg

Drawing on their love of soccer heritage, the enthusiasts behind Bumpy Pitch clothing company and lifestyle site The Original Winger recently created a collection of prints inspired by vintage transit signage. The line, called Flying Junction, modeled after subway and bus rollsigns from the early 1900s, uses hand-lettering techniques to make them look more authentically retro.

Printed with soy ink on archival recycled canvas or paper, much of the current stock is NYC-focused, but Flying Junction’s Ben Hooper explains they will continue to feature cities around the world, and are working on a line of t-shirts and other products for the near future.

Flying Junction prints currently sell online from Etsy, and span $20-130 depending on size and style.

Instant Rainbow

A colorfully crisp poster salutes vintage Polaroid cameras
polaroid1.jpg

Welsh designer Yumalum just released a second print in his Polaroid poster series. The “Instant Rainbow” graphic beautifully interprets the classic instant camera spitting out a crisp ROYGBIV snapshot.

Measuring 50 x 70 centimeters, each poster is printed on matte paper using a high-quality photo printer and ink. The vintage photo gear and popping rainbow stripes combo is sure to grab attention—the perfect addition to any photography nerd’s office wall. Grab one of the limited editions before they’re gone from Yumalum‘s Etsy shop for $55 (or $29 for the smaller version) and flaunt it to your friends.

Studio B.I.B 500

Man on a Guinness World Record mission hand-draws his black marker collection to date
bibs1.jpg

Inspired by a Guinness Book of World Records entry for the largest collection of cigarette rolling papers, Toronto-based artist Allister Lee of Studio B.I.B decided it was time to set a goal for himself and started collecting black markers. To “mark” the 500th acquisition in this graffiti-culture obsession, and midpoint to his overall goal (and hopefully Guinness record!), he’s released a hand-drawn print that shows the complete historical and international spectrum of the 500 pens in his collection to date.

The Studio B.I.B 500 poster, printed on 80-lb. gloss poster and an unlimited edition, measures 32″ x 42″.

It sells for $40 in NYC at the Reed Space, in San Francisco through Equal Distribution and online at Studio B.I.B.

A tribute to most viewed videos on youtube

Given the recent buzz Ted Williams has received from his viral youtube video we felt this homage poster to the most viewed videos of 2010 was worth a mention. For details on the designers process go here.

Alphabetical Poster

From Atari to Zelda, video game typography
alphabetical-1.jpg

Channeling his ingenuous passion for video games into ingenious graphic design, Brazilian illustrator and designer Maicon Costa created his “Alphabetical Poster” to spark a nostalgic conversation that aims to “stimulate memory and sensitize the audience.” With Mario, Pac-man and more in between, the inspired typeface spans the classic Donkey Kong barrel to the X-Box logo.

alphabetical2.jpg

It’s a piece that came to fruition over the course of one week, but is the upshot of meticulous research on archaic video game references and just one example of the pop culture iconography Costa plays with in all of his work. “It was a personal project. After I published it on my Tumblr it became an Internet phenomenon. People interact with it through a kind of game, trying to associate the name of letter to the figure.”

Costa is carefully tracking the web response to his groundbreaking typeface, hoping that the conversation he started will lead to more play. The poster sells from DeviantArt for $6-19 depending on size.
