ReubenMiller’s Got a Brand-Spanking New Look!

I’m sure you’ve noticed by now that we’ve got a fresh new look for the blog. After a lot of coding, tweaking and generally making a mess of CSS, I’ve managed to get it to look half-decent (let me know what you think of it!) It still remains a work-in-progress. The goal of this redesign was to make it easier to get around and add some more color. After all, you know we’re suckers for color!

Last but not least, our large header incorporates the work of a featured artist. We’ll be featuring different artists in that space and rotating them over time to keep things interesting. This isn’t a sponsored spot, but rather a testament to our support of great artists. Our first feature is of the brilliant and witty Simon Oxley, one of our all-time favorites.

Enjoy!

You probably understand how happy I am … a healthy new born son and everything is going very well, after a week in the hospital it’s fantastic to be back home … I haven’t had time yet to make some nice pictures for Bloesem, but will try and make some this week, luckily I already prepared some great posts the day before I went to the hospital which I would like to share with you this week and next week some very nice bloggers from all over the world will be showing you lovely guest posts here on Bloesem!

Thank you all for your lovely comments, emails and wishing wells on Facebook! Slowly I will be trying to respond to your questions and emails, but please be patient with me as I’m spending a lot of time these days with my lovely sons, Lode and Kiet!

LasColeccionistas-

Las Coleccionistas is a photography studio based in Barcelona formed by three girl photographers. Their main commitment is to tell stories through their images, to achieve a natural, creative and spontaneous style that confers attitude, character and philosophy to their photos … and I think they are doing just that with their beautiful photography … recently they opened a studio in the heart of Barcelona to see their work for yourselves, but for those of you who don’t go to Barcelona very often can have a look here in their etsy shop where you can buy some of their work as prints.

Nike Victory

Getty Launches Flickr Tie-In

Getty Images has launched its Flickr Collection – a set of images from the photo sharing community available for licence through the Getty Images site

The Flickr Collection features images selected by Getty’s photo editors “based on their expertise in licensing digital content and insights into customers’ needs,” according to a press release. Their choices major on “a variety of conceptual imagery, such as everyday scenes and believable subjects, and original and regionally relevant content”. New images will be added each month.

There are more details on the selection process on Getty’s Creative Blog, but none regarding payment terms. However, when the deal was first announced last year, it was reported that Flickr photographers would “be paid in the same manner as professionals if their images are used commercially”. That would mean that photographers would receive 30 per cent to 40 per cent of the licensing fee for limited use, or 20 percent if the image may be used with fewer restrictions.

PDN Online tried out the Collection and found it pretty pricey. For a shot of “Mount Hood seen from an airplane”, to be used half page on a website for five years the price was $2,070. A dedicated Flickr message board has more details of how things work.

Of course, if you want to use Flickr images, you could always go direct to the photographer (as we have often done in order to use images in CR), in which case they would receive 100% of the fee. You can’t do this with images in the Getty Flickr Collection though as Getty demands exclusivity over not just the images featured but also those that are substantially similar (see comments below). But there’s no doubt that the sheer volume of traffic that Getty attracts on its site, the idea that their team has filtered a collection to provide only those images that people are likely to use and the security and trust element that comes from having Getty manage the licensing/quality etc could prove an attractive model for image buyers.

Ecouté a Martin Parr

Is Martin Parr the first photographer to be honoured in popular song? French singer Vincent Delerm’s “Martin Parr” featured on his 2008 album, Quinze Chansons, and he is known to perform the song live complete with a Parr slide-show. While photography-inspired tunes crop up now and then (St. Etienne’s The Bad Photographer and, er, Tommy Steele’s Flash, Bang, Wallop for example) we can’t think of any other snappers inspiring songs directly. Until Gavin here came up with a cracker: Uptown Top Rankin by Anthea & Donna. Wallop indeed. Any more? Click through to see Delerm performing Martin Parr in Paris. (Thanks to the Rocket Gallery for the link)…

Troyt Coburn
