International Center of Photography Acquires Roman Vishniac Archive

vishniac.jpg

The International Center of Photography has acquired the entire archive of photographer Roman Vishniac (1897-1990), best known for documenting Jewish communities of Eastern Europe on the brink of World War II. The vast collection—which includes vintage prints, negatives, contact sheets, correspondence, and recently discovered film footage—was donated by Vishniac’s daughter in recognition of her father’s long-standing friendship with ICP founder Cornell Capa. “This is one of the most important acquisitions in the thirty-five year history of the International Center of Photography,” said ICP director Willis Hartshorn in a statement. “We look forward to sharing this extraordinary gift with our audience through exhibitions, publications, and online access.” ICP adjunct curator Maya Benton, an art historian specializing in documentary photography of Jewish life in Eastern and Central Europe, is directing the processing of the archive and organizing a major retrospective exhibition of Vishniac’s work slated to open at the ICP in 2012. See a selection of photos from the archive here.

Friday Photo: Dustin Wayne Harris Takes the Cake

(Dustin Wayne Harris).jpg
“Chloe,” a 2010 photograph by Dustin Wayne Harris

As we look back upon the month that was, our mouths still water at the thought of “Cake Mixx,” Dustin Wayne Harris‘s recent solo exhibition at Heist Gallery in New York. A recent SVA grad with a taste for delicious detritus, Harris served up photographs of cakes baked by people he dated. The work is bold, festive, moody, and fascinating. One chocolately effort suggests a giant inflatable Oreo, another has the otherworldly glow of a cartoon planet Earth. In a kind of Wayne Thiebaud-meets-Freud epiphany, Harris came to realize that the appearance of the cakes—baked at his request after a first date—would inevitably become a metaphor for the relationship. “Whereas some people consult astrologers, read Tarot cards or tea leaves to predict the future, cakes tell it all,” he said. “Take Chloe for example. You can see from her first cake (above), the relationship had great promise. The second tells you that it ended badly.”

Nejat Talas

Platons Powerful Portfolio Wins National Magazine Award for The New Yorker

platonx4.jpg
Lithuanian president Dalia Grybauskaité, President Barack Obama, Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi, and South African president Jacob Zuma were among the 110 world leaders Platon photographed over five days at the United Nations.

(platon).jpgIt was déjà vu all over again at last night’s National Magazine Awards, at least in the design and photo categories. The evening featured impressive threepeats, as Wired and National Geographic collected their third consecutive wins for design and photojournalism, respectively. And Platon pulled off back-to-back victories for The New Yorker in the photo portfolio category. The idea for his “Portraits of Power,” an astounding body of work spread lusciously over The New Yorker‘s December 7 issue, was sparked when the photographer happened to catch Henry Kissinger being interviewed on Charlie Rose early last year.

The veteran statesman was explaining how the contemporary political landscape makes it impossible for a country to solve even internal problems in isolation. Addressing international issues, he said, requires special relationships between world leaders. That gave Platon, a staff photographer at The New Yorker, an idea. “I wanted to show a new collective personality, as if all these leaders were now on one team, highlighting the difficult challenges and strained tensions, as well as the new optimism and goodwill, generated by Obama’s election,” Platon told us in an interview in advance of last night’s awards. He proposed an ambitious portfolio of world leaders to editor-in-chief David Remnick, and they decided on the United Nations as the ideal setting. “It is the place that brings together a family of nations and functions as the platform for world understanding,” said Platon. “It provided the perfect cohesive setting for my portraits for this project.”
