Vanity Shelf by Outofstock for Ligne Roset

Cologne 2013: French brand Ligne Roset has launched a storage box and mirror hanging either end of a leather strap by design collective Outofstock.

Vanity Shelf by Outofstock for Ligne Roset

The Vanity Shelf was shown by Ligne Roset at trade fair imm cologne last week and features a round mirror and rectangular shelving unit, both made of black-lacquered aluminium.

The two elements are connected by a natural leather strap that wraps round the perimeter of both items and allows them to be hung from a black-lacquered steel hook.

“The design explores the notion of balance – in the actual and figurative sense – between two geometric shapes of different visual weights, and two different functions in the mirror and storage tray,” say the designers. “Each element has its place, where one relies on the other.”

The mirror and shelf are intended for the hallway, bathroom or bedroom.

Hatched at Holland Avenue by Outofstock

Birds’ nests inspired the facade of this Singapore cafe by designers Outofstock, where eggs are served all day.

The bright yellow web of rope matches the colour of seats outside, as well as the handle of the wooden door.

Floorboard offcuts are stacked up to create a bar on the ground floor and other surfaces are picked out in chunky chipboard.

Irregularly shaped lighting fixtures decorate the walls on the upstairs floor, which the architects liken to hatching eggs or peeled potatoes.

This is the second Hatched restaurant that Outofstock have created, following one with egg-shaped holes in the walls from 2010.

Here’s some more information from Outofstock:

Hatched at Holland Avenue by Outofstock

Following the popularity of the first Hatched restaurant, Singapore and Barcelona based design collective Outofstock was recently commissioned to design a second restaurant at 267 Holland Avenue, Singapore.

Hatched at Holland Avenue by Outofstock

Located in a two-storey historical shophouse in Holland Village, the design of this egg-themed, all-day breakfast restaurant is based on the concept of a nest. The intention behind the design was to inject more colour and playful elements into the new restaurant, building upon the warm and cozy barn house atmosphere of the original establishment, also designed by Outofstock.

Hatched at Holland Avenue by Outofstock

The nest facade was realized with yellow braided rope woven around a steel frame with laser-cut holes. This steel frame also holds up the glass panels and a floor-sprung rough-sawn timber door.

Hatched at Holland Avenue by Outofstock

The restaurant uses mostly original lighting and furniture designed by Outofstock, such as the Naked chair, produced by Bolia and the Biscuit stool and table, produced by Environment.

Hatched at Holland Avenue by Outofstock

The bar counter is composed of offcuts from teak wood floorboards. The floorboards were used to compose a herring bone pattern, hence the almost perfect triangular offcuts.

Abstract wall lighting fixtures which could be interpreted as hatching eggs or peeled potatoes act as conversation pieces on the upper floor of the restaurant.

Laputa by Outofstock

Laputa by Outofstock

Singapore and Barcelona designers Outofstock presented floating islands made of crumpled copper and moss during the inaugural International Furniture Fair Singapore this month.

Laputa by Outofstock

Inspired by the fictional floating island of Laputa featured in Gulliver’s Travels by Jonathan Swift, the installation for their own showcase called The Workshop Gallery hung inside a Tyvek tent on a city-centre street.

Laputa by Outofstock

The moss was harvested from unnoticed nooks and crannies in the city like tree trunks and drains.”The intention was to let visitors view the moss up close, appreciating the nature that thrives unseen around us,” says Gabriel Tan from Outofstock.

Here are some more details from Outofstock:

A meditative space, an introspective journey. Imaginary landscapes we create to escape the banality of city life.

Laputa by Outofstock

The installation is inspired by Laputa, from Gulliver’s travels, a fictional flying island created by a small civilization of educated mathematicians, astronomers and musicians. Set in the heart of the city, Laputa is a juxtaposition of its context – the urban city. We live in a society full of products and information, flawed value systems, and endless material pursuits, noise and visual clutter. Perhaps, it is only in such a fictional landscape that we can finally make sense of our increasingly surreal realities.

Laputa by Outofstock

Every piece of the hanging installation was unique in its formation and the way it was crinkled, the more facets and ‘imperfections’ appeared, the more they bore the uncanny resemblance to miniature hills and valleys. The unfinished copper was allowed to weather with the natural elements and produce a changing patina, in this way both copper and moss were continually growing alongside each other.

Laputa by Outofstock

The Workshop Gallery is founded by Outofstock as a space dedicated to their passion for handcrafted objects.

Laputa by Outofstock

Bruno Munari once said, ”If what we use every day is made with art, and not thrown together by chance or caprice, then we shall have nothing to hide.” The Workshop Gallery too seeks to bring us objects that rekindle our long-lost contact with the art of making in our daily lives.

Burger King Garden Grill by Outofstock

Burger-King-Garden-Grill-by-Outofstock

Following our hotly debated story about the new-look interiors for fast-food giant McDonalds in France, here’s a revamped outlet for rival Burger King in Singapore that’s designed to imitate a garden.

Burger King Garden Grill by Outofstock

Like McDonalds, Burger King want to appeal to families with children as well as to teenagers, so commissioned design collective Outofstock to update their restaurants.

Burger King Garden Grill by Outofstock

The Burger King Garden Grill features a plant-covered trellis ceiling, exposed brick walls and plant-pot pendent lamps.

The dining area is filled with stick-back chairs more usually found in English kitchens and metal-framed wooden dining tables inspired by camping furniture, while sofas upholstered with outdoor fabrics line the walls.

Posters advertising food are displayed in pictures frames propped up on wooden shelves.

More restaurants incorporating the new design are scheduled to open in Singapore and Japan in 2012.

Other designer updates to fast-food restaurants include a Little Chef outlet by Ab Rogers and a chicken shop in Munich by Ippolito Fleitz Group.

Here’s some more information from Outofstock:

“BK Garden Grill” by Outofstock

Burger King Asia-Pacific recently commissioned Outofstock to design a pilot restaurant in Singapore. The goal of the project was to create a new interior identity for Burger King. Some key points mentioned by BK was that they wanted a warm and welcoming store that would appeal to a wide audience – teens, young adults as well as families with children – the design should stand out but at the same time be accessible for the man on the street.

Burger King Garden Grill by Outofstock

We started off by analysing the BK brand, it’s advertising visuals as well as its history. We noticed that one word that kept popping up was “flame grilled”, and we used this clue as a starting point. From collective experiences, our mental picture of flame grilling is closely associated with garden barbecues and camping cook-outs.

Burger King Garden Grill by Outofstock

These activities, often held with groups of family and friends, left indelible memories in our growing up years. This led us to name the project “BK Garden Grill”, which is based on bringing the garden, as well as colours and textures of the outdoors into the restaurant.

Burger King Garden Grill by Outofstock

We wanted to remind people of the joy of communal dining with family and friends in a warm and natural atmosphere, evoking memories of BBQ parties and summer camps.

Burger King Garden Grill by Outofstock

We also aimed at created a more personable and flexible space, where potted plants can be neatly arranged or randomly placed on wooden ledges along exposed brick walls and glass windows. Framed marketing posters placed on these wooden shelves can be changed or moved about easily. More objects can be added to the fray with time as the restaurant develops its own story.

Burger King Garden Grill by Outofstock

Custom designed lounge seats and ottomans are upholstered with outdoor fabrics that are water repellent. The lounge seating area is set against a collage wall of materials and textures, most of which are applied throughout the restaurant, from raw concrete to clay bricks, wood veneers as well as cork, blackboard, copper and brass. BK’s branding and slogans can be applied in a more engaging way with this material wall.

Burger King Garden Grill by Outofstock

An overhead “roof” trellis takes visual attention away from exposed services such as air-conditioning and kitchen exhaust trunking while also acting as cable trays for pendant lamps and spot lights. We suspended clay, concrete and aluminum pots as pendant lamps to add to the garden atmosphere.

Burger King Garden Grill by Outofstock

We designed simple metal framed tables whose structure is reminiscent of foldable camping furniture, but being very strong and easy to clean. We sourced for a traditional stick-back chair to complete the look of the restaurant.

Burger King Garden Grill by Outofstock

The pilot store was officially opened during the recent BK Asia-Pacific Conference in Singapore and was met with generally positive feedback. More Burger King outlets based on our “Garden Grill” concept are currently being built in Singapore and Japan, and will be open by early 2012.
