London-based designer Oscar Diaz launched this industrial looking stainless steel bottle opener at the Project No. 8 shop in New York this week.

Created for American brand Field, Loop has a symmetrical form that reduces the visibility of the mould line necessary for the casting process. “Because the mould line matches the edge of the object, you barely see it,” he told Dezeen.

We’ve previously featured a combined bottle opener and spanner that fixes onto your bicycle and a corkscrew and bottle opener made from twisted strips of steel.

Other products by Diaz that we’ve featured include a toy that’s assembled from its own packaging and a set of pens that record sound as a line on paper and then play it back.

Tube Toys by Oscar Diaz

These toy vehicles by London designer Oscar Diaz are assembled from their own packaging.

Each Tube Toy comes with components like stickers and wheels inside a cardboard tube that becomes the body of the car, fire engine, train or tractor, with pre-cut slots for easy assembly.

Only the paper strip round the outside is discarded and all components are recycled or recyclable.

Gift company NPW presented the products at New York International Gift Fair earlier this month, alongside temporary tattoo finger puppets by Héctor Serrano.

Other projects by Diaz on Dezeen include a calendar that uses the capillary action of ink spreading across paper to display the date and pens that record sound on paper then play it back – see all our stories about his work here.

Here are some more details from Diaz:

The Tube Toys are a series of vehicles to assemble were the packaging is also a part of the product, reducing considerably the amount of material discarded after buying it, and the extra cost that traditional packaging involves.

All the parts needed to build each vehicle are contained on a standard cardboard tube, which doubles as the packaging. The tubes have slots and holes to place the wheel axes and other components. A single stripe of paper displaying all the information necessaries for the shop (brand, product name/description and barcode) is the only bit that will be discarded after purchase.

All the materials used on the product are also recycled and/or recyclable. The cars are easy to assemble and acknowledge the fact that children often enjoy playing with the packaging as much as they do with the actual toys.

It has a funnel to hold a tea light on one side and supports a tall candle when inverted.

Called Duo, the silicone product for Spanish brand Doiy is easy to clean because wax doesn’t stich to the flexible surface.

Oscar Diaz will exhibit a silicone pen pot for the same company during the London Design Festival later this month.

The following information is from Diaz:

Duo is a candleholder that can be used with the two more common household candles. One side holds the traditional candlestick, and in the other the standard tea light.

The ribs in the candlestick side allow fitting for slightly different diameters of candles. The translucent silicone diffuses the light of the tea light, adding a soft warm glow to the dinner table. A small handle help to move the candle around safely once it has been lit. The wax can easily be removed from the surface of the candleholder as it doesn’t stick to the silicone material.

Duo will be presented as part of the new Doiy collection this week at ‘Maison et Objet’ in Paris (Sept. 9-13, 2011 ), Manta Design booth Hall6 StandJ66 K59.

London designer Oscar Diaz has redesigned the pen pot so there’s no need to tip pens all over the desk or jam your fingers down the side to retrieve a paper clip or pencil sharpener that’s slipped to the bottom.

The silicone Pen Pal has teeth round the edge to hold pens upright while a shallow dish in the centre contains smaller items.

The information below is from Oscar Diaz:

Pen Pal by Oscar Diaz

Pen pal is a simple pen stand made of silicone. Observing pen holders and improvised pen pots I realised that many small objects are difficult to access when they are mixed with pens of different sizes.

Usually the smaller items fall into to the bottom, which makes them unreachable and they end up taking much of the available space.

Pen Pal proposes to have fewer pens, but have all of them accessible. The central can hold clips; pins and other small objects while the conical holes allow placing pens of different diameters all around the cavity.

It keeps everything accessible avoiding having to turn your pen pot upside down to find a clip.
