MyGeneration

Knoll introduces an online hub for Generation chair fans to express their personal work-style
knoll-mygen11.jpg

In today’s digital workspace, a good chair has become essential for those without in-office masseurs to soothe the cricks and cramps that come from prolonged periods at a desk. To really understand how people use their chairs at work, Knoll launched myGeneration, an online hub where people can share their individual work styles and experiences using Knoll’s ergonomic Generation chair.

knoll-mygen21.jpg

Users begin by creating a Knoll profile, giving basic info, then explaining their workstyle and inspiration, and finally creating a personal tagline. They can also upload up to five action shots of how they use their chair, showing whether they’re a fan of swiveling, feet on the desk or a hardcore, hunched-over typist.

An entertaining and informative way to see people in their working environments, check out myGeneration online, where you can also click to purchase a customized Generation chair for $776.

NeatDesk

Digitally organize paper piles with a handy all-in-one device
neatdesk1.jpg

Tidying up your workspace might seem impossible with endless paperwork continuously piling up. To help manage the glut, I’ve been testing out NeatDesk, a scanner-and-software combo that turns clutter into organized files on your computer. In the week that I’ve used it, I’ve become kind of obsessed—the beauty of the solution is that it’s perfectly integrated hardware and software.

Just drop tax filings, invoices, correspondence and even business cards into the gadget, either one at a time or in a stack—Neat Desk can handle up to 10 double-sided documents at a time at up to 600 dpi.

From there, the NeatDesk rapidly scans and saves everything to NeatWorks, the companion desktop software, where you can edit and process as needed. Built for use with PC and Mac platforms, NeatWork’s intelligent OCR technology files information for easy exporting to popular platforms.

neatdesk_mac1.jpg

It converts business cards to text for effortless syncing with your computer address book; receipts can be organized directly in to an expense-report-ready spreadsheet; and documents can be filed or converted to pdfs and shared.

NeatDesk sells online for $400 from The Neat Company, as well as at stores like Staples and Office Max.

Alessi at Milan Design Week

Alessi’s new Milan showroom, lighting collaboration and projects by emerging designers
alessilux1.jpg

The opening of Alessi’s new Milan space today was more than just a celebration of their new digs, but also an occasion to present some of the iconic Italian brand’s latest projects, including an innovative line of lamps and luminaries, produced by Foreverlamp and conceived by a team of three young designers.

alessilux2.jpg

The trio consists of Giovanni Alessi Anghini, Gabriele Chiave and Frederic Gooris, who explained, “We work as a team, even though we still run our own design firms. We’ve known each other for years and Alberto Alessi decided to give us the chance to create something new.” The AlessiLux project breaks the boundaries between classic bulb and lamp, creating real enlightened and colorful objects. With high quality overall and the latest technology—both in terms of performance and environmentalism—will this team create something new for the future? “We cannot be precise by now, but we are working on ideas able to combine Alessi’s design excellence and mass market.”

alessiecal1.jpg

Also in the new showroom, ECAL (the University of Art and Design of Lausanne) presented an interesting exhibition to showcase the desk and office objects designed by Bachelor students in industrial design that resulted from a workshop with Elric Petit. A pivoting opening and closing system characterizes the “Frana” pencil box, the “Spettro” flying saucer captures paper clips and “Ora” is a clock mobile that suspends time. Conceiving of the workspace as a friendly and welcoming environment, they came up with tools intended to provide some joy to their users—in true Alessi spirit.

See more images of all the designs in the gallery below.

Pixels XL

Change up homes, offices and more with oversized adhesive pixels
pixels1.jpg

One of the highlights at Valencia Disseny Week 2010 was the constantly changing Pixels XL booth, a concept developed by Valencia-based CDRoig design studio.

The square tiles easily attach to the wall, and are just as easily removed to suit any color, mood or event. The genius in the design is its simplicity, flexibility, and ease of use, working well for temporary needs like events or meetings, freshening up rooms in your house, and keeping kids busy for hours at a time. Just about any material can be affixed to the front of the tile—such as aluminum, wood or plastic, making the incredibly simple design applicable to a wide scope of uses.

pixels2.jpg pixels3.jpg

A clear way to graphically communicate or create relevant themes for various office projects without completely changing a space, Pixels XL also encourage creativity within the home.

The patent-pending design adheres without leaving behind holes in the wall or a sticky residue. Not available yet for purchase, contact CDRoig for availability and pricing.

Affected: Endangered Species Bulletin Boards

Bio-Corkboard-3.jpg

Barcelona-based studio Pöko Design‘ new bulletin boards do double duty—as both a place to pin up notes or bits of inspiration and as an important reminder in the form of a creative design in and of itself.

The cute series of animal cork boards adds a sober touch by depicting the diverse range of species directly under threat from climate change. Produced by Kikkerland (which means “frog land” in Dutch), the collection, called Affected, features a polar bear, a migratory songbird and, appropriately, a treefrog.

Bio-Corkboard-6.jpg

Designer Petz Scholtus tells us that each of these animals is already experiencing the effects of rising global temperatures on their natural habitats. “The thinning ice at the Arctic Circle leaves fewer places for both the polar bears to hunt. Songbirds are particularly sensitive to both temperature and their habitats, so warmer seasons worldwide may mean that you won’t be hearing some of those old familiar songs in years to come. International trade, deforestation and climate change causes the spread of the chytrid fungus, which causes chytridiomycosis and it has virtually made tree frogs extinct.”

Sad as the decline of these three is, the unbelievable truth is extinction currently threatens over 17,000 species. Arriving at a time when the recent Gulf oil spill’s horribly large reminder drives home the point that human actions can cause great environmental damage.

Not only the form of the boards but also their material reminds us of the importance of biodiversity. Explains Scholtus, “By using cork, we keep the cork oak forests alive, one of the most sustainable natural habitats and home of several endangered species with the highest level of biodiversity in southwest Europe and northwest Africa.” What’s more, 2% of the boards’ proceeds will be donated to Tree-Nation to fight desertification, climate change, poverty, and CO2 emissions by planting more trees in the world.

Bio-Corkboard-7.jpg

No one likes to be beaten on the head with an eco-stick, so we appreciate the Affected bulletin boards for their simple beauty and their quiet daily “memo to self” that we need to watch what we’re doing to our planet.

The bulletin boards sell for $20 each from Kikkerland.
