Ecriture Infinie

Leave your mark in a massive notebook filled with handwriting for the future

by
Bryn Chernoff

Ecriture1.jpg

Starting at Tokyo’s Mori Art Museum in 2006, Cameroon-born artist Bili Bidjocka and Lausanne-born curator Simon Njami have been traversing the world inviting creatives of varied professional backgrounds to write on the blank pages of eight enormous books “as if it were their the last opportunity to hand write something.” Their project, called Ecriture Infinie, emphasizes the gestures of writing and the flow of pen on paper rather than actual content.

The project is a celebration of handwriting, and a call to attention around the 3,500-year-old practice that is rapidly fading from our daily lives. Each statement is filmed as it is entered, serving as a reflection on the process of writing and a documentation of the varying writing styles at this point in time. Once complete, each book is then sealed and hidden in a secret location until discovered.

The eighth and final book in the series is a collaboration with Moleskine, who created a massive version of their signature blank notebook and debuted it last week in Mantua, Italy at the Festivaletteratura.

Contributions can also be made to the project online, by submitting a video or images of your writing. The video created by Moleskine for the project shows great examples of the myriad ways people are contributing and the infinite styles of handwriting people possess.

Clibe

A digital notebook that allows you to showcase your creative talents or next big idea
clibe1.jpg

There are a myriad of creative applications for sharing videos, links and music, but few allow you to extend personal projects or ideas. Clibe—a digital sketchbook app that has just soft-launched—allows you to create on an iPad just as you would with paper and pen, and then share the book with friends or add it to Clibe’s public gallery space. Your entire notebook (which can also be kept completely private) lives in the cloud, so you are also able to access it from any computer. When someone shares a book with you all of their changes are reflected in your copy as well making it a living document.

I’ve been using a beta of Clibe for over a month, and I am impressed with the set of tools it offers. You can paint, draw, use text or import photos from an iPad camera, photo library or social networks. There are different paper and pen types as well, allowing for a great creative range. The app can be used for anything from personal doodles to scrapbooking to presentation planning, such as the sketches I created below as part of the preparations for my talk at Future Trends in Miami next month.

clibe2.jpg

One of the benefits of its digital format is its wipe-board capability. I can use Clibe with a group of clients in order to diagram a new idea, and if we decide to modify that, I can erase a portion or start over easily. As developer Roberto Tagliabue points out, you even start a meeting by uploading a client’s UI screenshot, and draw and move things around from there.

The vast potential to share ideas and generate creative flow with Clibe is exciting. The newly-launched app is available for free in iTunes for a limited time.

Threadless Scout Books

Handy notebooks from everyone’s favorite crowd-sourced company

threadless-scout-1.jpg

Another clever idea from the minds behind the crowd-sourced t-shirt phenomenon, Threadless has teamed up with Scout Books to create a run of handcrafted notebooks made from 100% recycled paper and printed with vegetable ink in Portland, OR. The notebooks, operating under a similar model that brought so much love to Threadless in the first place, will feature a selection of themed designs from their community-voted favorites, each artfully printed on a pocket-sized notebook just for you.

Just like their modestly-priced t-shirts, Threadless’ answer to Field Notes won’t break the bank at just $9 for a pack of three notebooks once 11 August 2011 rolls around. Keep an eye online for more sneak peeks.

Landmade Cork Journals

Hand-bound notebooks with beautifully one-of-a-kind cork covers

MR-cork1.jpg MR-cork2.jpg

We recently came across the meticulously constructed Landmade Cork Journal by Michael Roger Press,
and not only does the material give way to a beautiful pattern, but the half-century-old stationer uses the traditional Smyth sewn binding technique. Hand-sewing the pages together (instead of gluing) gives the notebook’s binding extra strength and allows it to open flat—two important features for anyone who uses a notebook regularly.

MR-cork3.jpg

Made with acid-free paper, each piece is proudly crafted in limited runs at their New Jersey factory. By producing notebooks and paper goods in small batches, they retain the flexibility to innovate and implement new ideas into their line. They also offer the option to personalize nearly all their products with a custom die-cast stamp.

Each journal is completely unique by nature’s design, made with natural, sustainably-harvested cork. Sold in two sizes ($10-17) and lined or unlined, Michael Roger Press products sell online and at specialty stationers.

Le Programme de ma Semaine

Plan week by week with this Francophile notebook
marks_day-nb8-pk.jpg

Combining their love of French tendance with clean and playful design, Tokyo stationery brand Mark’s Inc. aptly call their striking weekly planner “Le programme de ma semaine.” Each page features a blank calendar with the days divided into two sections, while the unprinted reverse side provides ample room for jotting down notes. The spiral-bound style helps both for laying it open on a desk or for times like Fashion Week when you’ve got to stay on task but your adorably tiny purse won’t allow for the full notebook.

I happen to love this vibrant raspberry color, but the planner comes in a variety of colors from their online shop Mark’s Tokyo Edge (¥420) as well as from Papernation (£5) in the U.K. If you’re in Barcelona or Madrid, you might find it where I did (thanks Maite!) at the great bookstore
La Central
