Created from a mix of vintage Super-8 footage and abstract effects, San Francisco artist Alex Kopps’ ‘Displacement’ documents an obscure surf subculture that emerged in the 70s, as well as the aesthetic culture that accompanied. Watch the trailer after the jump.
A little background on the film: The ‘subculture’ that Kopps documents was resultant of/inspired by the surfboard designs of George Greenough, which were later refined by Greg Liddle. Back in the 60s, when longboards were the standard, Greenough instead designed and rode short kneeboards. Beyond ‘Displacement’, Kopps has created a diverse body of work ranging from more short films to paintings and books. See more on his site.
Indonesian-born, Toronto-raised Tessar Lo’s show ‘M A P S’ is up at Toronto’s Show & Tell Gallery from April 1st to May 1st. Lo’s work has a mysterious, deep and colourful quality to it that explores where ‘dreams and reality meet’.
More about Lo here. And for those insterested in checking it out, Show and Tell Gallery is located at 1161 Dundas St. West. Check out their site here.
Amazing work by Taiwanese illustrator, Inca Pan.
Check out more of his work on his flickr stream– he’s got some beautiful photography as well.
Chinese artist Liu Bolin has made an art of becoming the invisible man. He claims his photos make a statement about his place in society. He sees himself as an outsider whose artistic efforts are not always valued, especially in his native country (thanks to my artist/designer friend Paola in Mexico City for this link).
ABSOLUT vodka is hosting a party as part of its summer promotions. Though the brand has collaborated with more than 300 artists around the world, this is the first time it has commissioned an artist in Canada. Justin Broadbent, a Toronto-based artist, is conceptualizing the event. Broadbent, a multi-disciplinary artist has been commissioned by Absolut to transform a secret “unconventional” space into an all-day art exhibit that turns into a party at night. To do this, Broadbent can use any form of art, so long as it embodies the idea that, “In an Absolut world, opportunities pop up,” the tag line the brand is using in its summer marketing. Follow updates on Justin’s blog, and pencil in August 13, 2009 on your calendar!
