Cool Cover Art

Reading this week’s New Yorker, I also came across some very cool cover art.

Jorge Colombo‘s iphone sketch, conducted “using Brushes, an application for the iPhone, while standing for an hour outside Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum in Times Square” is quite an impressive piece of techno-finger painting.

Watch the video of his work-in-progress here.

UPPERCASE loves Etsy

Work on the second issue is well underway and we have a few pages reserved for advertising. I would like to feature one page of Etsy sellers since the site has been such a great resource for finding artists for the gallery, sellers for my store, illustrators and photographers for the magazine, and great inspiration and advice from Etsy’s articles and emails.

Since the magazine was first announced, the vast majority of UPPERCASE magazine single issue purchases and subscriptions have been from online customers: our readership are people who do shop online, making them a the perfect audience for Etsy sellers from near and far.

The rates for these small marketplace ads, as illustrated above, are very inexpensive for print advertising. We also include a link to your site (which will become a bit more prominent as the website organization evolves over the next weeks).

Subscribers rate: $72 CAD or $62.31 USD by today’s rate
For non-subscribers: $90 CAD or $77.88 USD by today’s rate

Please fill in this form to apply for an ad space.

Call for submissions: The Lost Art of “The End”

PARTICIPATE IN ISSUE 2: Early films often featured an elegant “The End” title at the conclusion of the story. What happened to that tradition? We invite you to imagine what “The End” would look like for today’s movies. What would the end title look like for No Country for Old Men? Twilight? Terminator? {The image above is part of The End flickr pool.}

Images should be 4″ wide at 300dpi, emailed to info–at–uppercasegallery.ca. Closing date: June 1 but I’d appreciate an email to let me know if you’ll be participating.

This submission is by Tom Djll: an imagined end title for a Coen brothers’ movie.

Victoria Day

Here in Canada it is the Victoria Day holiday, historically a celebration of Queen Victoria’s birthday and now recognition of Queen Elizabeth’s birthday. Other than the day off and some city fireworks, the long weekend is usually spent outside getting the yard in shape and planting the garden. (That is if it doesn’t SNOW today, which is apparently an actual possibility!)

For today’s post, I encourage you to visit another Victoria’s blog: sfgirlbybay! Victoria has recently returned from a trip to London, so it is quite fitting for the day. {photos by Victoria}

We’re very happy that Victoria will be contributing to the upcoming issue of UPPERCASE magazine.

Work/Life anniversary

I’m giving away complimentary copies of Work/Life to the next 10 subscribers. It was one year ago that I was signing off on the book proofs in a hotel room in NYC, on my way to the National Stationery Show. I’m really proud of this book and it was a turning point for UPPERCASE: the experience of curating, writing, designing and publishing Work/Life confirmed my love for making books and I dove headfirst into more projects. Can you believe that since June 2008, we’ve released Work/Life, Old School, Jen11 and the first issue of UPPERCASE magazine? Holy cow! Good thing I just took a 3-week vacation.

About Work/Life:

“Being a professional illustrator or photographer is a full-time job that goes beyond the mainstream nine-to-five: tough deadlines mean working through the night and photo shoots might whisk you away to unexpected places. Flashes of inspiration can happen anytime, so your sketchbook is an indispensable appendage. You might spend innumerable hours secluded in your studio, or perhaps you’re a regular at the local coffeeshop. Chances are, your work and your life are one and the same and you wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Work/Life is a book celebrating Canadian illustration and photography. Unlike magazine awards annuals or traditional illustration directories that are little more than picture books, our publication delves into what fuels a creative life. Participants were interviewed about their creative focus and artistic technique as well as their inspirations and aspirations. Sketchbook pages, studio shots, inspirational objects and personal photography allow us to peek into their work and their lives.

Some of our new contributors

I am very happy that Stefanie Augustine, illustrator extraordinaire, is working on a piece for UPPERCASE magazine’s summer issue. The talented Grace from Poetic Home will also be contributing writing and photography! Coincidentally, they both have a Mad Men connection—Stefanie has this illustration in her portfolio and Grace’s tea set was purchased by the prop master for the set of the show!

Blanca!

Blanca Gomez, the fantastic cover illustrator of our first issue is featured in a sneak peek on Design*Sponge today! She has a lovely apartment; what a view! { The images above are from the feature about Blanca in issue #1. }

{ Picture of the magazine in Blanca’s home, from the Design*Sponge website. }

‘Le Ballon Rouge’

Albert Lamorisse‘s classic children’s film, ‘The Red Balloon,’ (France, 1956) never ceases to win hearts with its whimsical yet poignant, and near silent, tale of a young boy’s friendship with a red balloon. The film stills below remind me of Blanca Gomez‘s elegant, playful artwork.

Janus films has released a newly remastered 35 mm print, but the clip below gives a nice slice.

The little magazine that could…

It has been my first day back at work, mostly responding to the many emails and inquiries that needed my attention. So many of you are interested in contributing and have submitted your blogs and portfolios for review—thank you! You’re a VERY talented group of people. I really appreciate your comments, encouragement and continued interest in the magazine.

There are just a few hundred copies of issue one left! Subscribe soon to ensure that your subscription starts with the first issue (sure to become a collector’s item, if I do say so myself.) If you’ve already purchased a single issue and have decided that you’d like to subscribe, you are more than welcome to do so. Just send us a note to let us know that you already have issue one and your subscription will start with the summer issue, out in early July.

Many thanks to all of you who have blogged about the magazine and helped maintain this momentum. We’re excited about bringing you issue #2. {photo of UPPERCASE magazine in Manos}
