Glowing 3D-printed characters explore LA in Cut Copy’s music video

Dezeen Music Project: a pair of miniature 3D-printed figures wander around Los Angeles in this stop-motion music video by creative studio PARTY for Australian electronic band Cut Copy’s track We Are Explorers.

“We came up with the idea based on the title and lyric ‘we are explorers’,” PARTY creative director and founder Masashi Kawamura told Dezeen. “We wanted to create a story of explorers but wanted create the journey in a never seen before way, so we decided to create 200 figurines using 3D printing and film them as stop-motion animation.”

The video for Cut Copy follows the tiny characters as they navigate the streets: encountering litter, scaling mail boxes and collecting objects found along their journey.

For the stop-motion sequence, the two hundred figurines were created on a Stratasys 1200es printer with UV reactive filament.

The team used handheld black lights to create the luminosity during the seven days of filming in Los Angeles, then exaggerated the brightness slightly during post production.

“We used UV reactive filament to print the figurines on the 3D printer, so they glowed under the black light,” said Kawamura.

Once they had finished, PARTY made the files used to create the video open source so others could try it out.

“We wanted to create an experience bigger than just the video,” explained Kawamura, “so we decided to release all the 3D data and storyboard for free on Bit Torrent, so the people can actually recreate the whole video if they want to.”

Emerson College campus by Morphosis places curvy classrooms within a hollow frame

Thom Mayne’s Los Angeles firm Morphosis has completed a new Hollywood campus for arts school Emerson College where a rectangular frame surrounds a curvaceous cluster of classrooms (+ slideshow).

Situated in the heart of the entertainment industry on Sunset Boulevard, Emerson College Los Angeles will accommodate over 200 undergraduate students from the renowned creative arts and communication school based in Boston, Massachusetts.

The building’s frame-like outer volume accommodates ten storeys of student housing, while the curving central sections contain teaching facilities and staff administration, amidst a series of terraces and connecting bridges.

“The building is designed to expand the interactive, social aspect of education,” said Thom Mayne. “We focused on creating with the broader community in mind – both in terms of public space and sustainable design.”

The east and west-facing sides of the building feature glazed curtain walls and are screened by an intelligent shading system where horizontal fins angle open or closed to suit changes in light, temperature and the angle of the sun.

“The entire building becomes a stage set for student films, screenings and industry events, with the Hollywood sign, the city of Los Angeles and the Pacific Ocean in the distance providing added scenery,” said the design team.

Here’s a design statement from Morphosis:

Emerson College Los Angeles

Based in Boston, Massachusetts, Emerson is renowned for its communication and arts curriculum. Located in the heart of Hollywood, Emerson College Los Angeles (ELA) defines the college’s identity in the centre of the entertainment industry and the second largest city in the United States. The new facility establishes a permanent home on Sunset Boulevard for Emerson College’s existing undergraduate internship program that will extend the ELA experience to students studying in any of the seven disciplines that are offered through the School of Communication and the School of the Arts. Additionally, ELA will offer post-graduate, certificate, and professional study programs. The new facility will also host workshops, lectures, and other events to engage with alumni and the LA community.

Bringing student housing, instructional facilities, and administrative offices to one location, ELA condenses the diversity of a college campus into an urban site. Evoking the concentrated energy of East-Coast metropolitan centres in an iconic Los Angeles setting, a rich dialogue emerges between students’ educational background and their professional futures.

Emerson College Los Angeles by Morphosis

Fundamental to the Emerson Los Angeles experience, student living circumstances give structure to the overall building. Housing up to 217 students, the domestic zones frame a dynamic core dedicated to creativity, learning, and social interaction. Composed of two slender residential towers connected by a helistop, the 10-storey square frame encloses a central open volume to create a flexible outdoor “room”.

A sculpted form housing classrooms and administrative offices weaves through the void, defining multi-level terraces and active interstitial spaces that foster informal social activity and creative cross-pollination. Looking out onto the multi-level terrace, exterior corridors to student suites and common rooms are shaded by an undulating, textured metal scrim spanning the full height of the towers’ interior face.

Looking to the local context, the centre finds a provocative precedent in the interiority of Hollywood film studios, where outwardly regular facades house flexible, fantastical spaces within. With rigging for screens, media connections, sound, and lighting incorporated into the facade’s metal framework, this dynamic visual backdrop also serves as a flexible armature for outdoor performances. The entire building becomes a stage set for student films, screenings, and industry events, with the Hollywood sign, the city of Los Angeles, and the Pacific Ocean in the distance providing added scenery.

Emerson College Los Angeles by Morphosis

Anticipated to achieve a LEED Gold rating, the new centre champions Emerson’s commitment to both sustainable design and community responsibility. Wrapping the building’s northwest corner, a green wall underscores the towers’ actively changing exterior skin. Connected to weather stations that track the local climate, temperature, and sun angle, the automated sunshade system opens and closes horizontal fins outside the high-performance glass curtain-wall to minimise heat gain while maximising daylight and views. Further green initiatives include the use of recycled and rapidly renewable building materials, installation of efficient fixtures to reduce water use by 40%, energy savings in heating and cooling through a passive valence system, and a building management and commissioning infrastructure to monitor and optimise efficiency of all systems.

Ace Hotel opens latest branch in downtown Los Angeles

The Ace Hotel chain has opened its newest outpost inside a 1920s tower in downtown Los Angeles, complete with a 1600-seat theatre.

Ace Hotel‘s in-house design team worked with local firm Commune Design to restore and renovate the building formerly used by film studio United Artists, located in LA’s Broadway Theatre District.

“While the theatre’s original design was a lush interpretation of the Spanish Gothic style, the tower’s facade hid a minimalist poured concrete structure,” said Atelier Ace. “Therein lies the basis for the concept at Ace Hotel’s newest home – the marriage between… 1920s Hollywood glamour and modern minimalism.”

As a contrast to the tower’s Gothic exterior, the guest rooms are kept minimal and maintain their original poured concrete ceilings.

Commune Design referenced twentieth-century architect Rudolf Schindler’s West Hollywood residence when designing the decor.

The furniture in the rooms is made of dark grey-tinted MDF, while splashes of colour are provided by the upholstery and artwork. Bathrooms fitted with brass fixtures are separated from sleeping and living spaces by steel and glass windows.

Public spaces in the tower include a coffee bar, a restaurant and a mezzanine lounge, which have also been stripped back to reveal the original concrete surfaces.

The Spanish Gothic-style theatre has had intricate wall and ceiling mouldings restored and provides 72 square metres of event space. A range of suites and a private screening room are also available to hire out for meetings or parties.

Last year Ace Hotel added a venue in Shoreditch by Universal Design Studio to its list of locations.

Each Ace Hotel is located in an emerging neighbourhood and is designed to reflect its character. The concept by the company’s founder Alex Calderwood centres around fitting out old buildings using a modest budget and utilising industrial salvage. Calderwood sadly passed away in November last year and this hotel is the first to open since his death.

Gehry presents new proposal for site opposite his Walt Disney Concert Hall

News: architect Frank Gehry has submitted new plans for a hotel and apartment complex to be located across the road from his Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles.

Frank Gehry’s original plans for the three-acre site on Grand Avenue were declined in 2006, but the architect is once again working alongside real estate developer Related Companies on a new vision that would see a pair of towers constructed opposite one of his most iconic buildings.

According to the LA Times, the complex will comprise a stacked arrangement of shops and restaurants arranged around a U-shaped plaza. The two towers will be positioned on either side, with the first housing a 300-room hotel and the second containing apartments for both rental and sale.

Landscaped terraces would cascade down the side of the complex, offering residents and guests a view towards the famous concert hall. There’s also an option to add an auditorium that could be used as both a performance space and a nightclub.

Proposals were submitted to planning officials on Monday. If approved, construction could begin in 2015 and be complete by 2018.

Gehry is also reported to be looking at the design of the Grand Avenue streetscape and could propose new paving and street lighting between the concert hall and the site. He recently complained about plans for a new subway line nearby, claiming it would ruin performances.

Car Park House by Anonymous Architects

A combined car park and terrace covers the roof of this hillside house in Los Angeles by Californian studio Anonymous Architects (+ slideshow).

Car Park House by Anonymous Architects

Anonymous Architects designed the single-storey home for an actor. It is situated on the edge of a steep slope, so the floors are arranged from top to bottom, with an entrance on the roof and rooms on the level below.

Car Park House by Anonymous Architects

“The added benefit of providing the parking and the house as the same structure is to eliminate the need for additional foundations and walls for a garage,” said architect Simon Storey.

Car Park House by Anonymous Architects

“The inversion moves the typical ground floor of the house up on the roof, and makes the simple act of arriving home and driving onto the roof of the house a surprise every time,” he added.

Car Park House by Anonymous Architects

Supported by chunky concrete columns, the house appears to be thrusting away from the edge of the slope. A recessed balcony offers views of the San Gabriel Mountains to the north east of the city.

A kitchen sits at the centre of the plan and forms the corner of an open-plan living room, while three bedrooms and two bathrooms are positioned around the other side of the house.

A bridge connects the roof with the street, providing an entrance for both cars and pedestrians.

Other projects by Anonymous Architects include a tiny house with only three rooms lifted off the hillside by a set of concrete pilotis and a 4.5 metre-wide house inspired by narrow homes in Japan.

Here’s a project description from the architects:

Car Park House

Starting with a vacant lot with a very steep down-slope from the street, the design of the house places the carport on the roof with the residence below. In addition to being a dramatic shift of expectations, it is also a logical response to the building code which requires parking for two vehicles.

This inversion moves the typical ground floor of the house up on the roof and makes the simple act of arriving home – and driving onto the roof of the house – a surprise every time. The roof is also usable as deck space and has unobstructed views of the San Gabriel Mountains, which are to the Northeast of Los Angeles.

Because of the steep terrain the house is designed to float over the hillside. This reduces the amount of foundation required and also means that the only way to access the house is over the bridge – so it is truly a floating structure.
