Well Timed Closure

The Subway Signal Light is a digital sand timer that intuitively changes color from green, to amber to red, informing the passenger through passive visual clues, that the doors to the train are about to close. As far as subway safety is concerned, you can’t be too safe. Just the other day I saw a lady get caught between doors because she tried to rush through the doors at the last minute. Hopefully visual clues will help people understand better that green says go and red says STOP!

Shape Shifting Solar Lamp

One look at this modern lantern and it’s clear just how versatile it is. While it makes a great table or floor lamp, the tripodal design’s three bendable arms also make it possible to affix to the most awkward of surfaces or other objects to direct light exactly where you need it. Better yet, it’s entirely solar powered, utilizing solar-cells located on each arm to harness the sun’s energy.

Sustainable Orgami Lights

Using his own original origami folding compositions, designer Jiangmei Wu’s latest creation is this series of light fixtures made from recycled cotton paper and LED light bulbs. Each shade can be compressed into a flat piece (for easy shipping or storage), but once folded they are entirely self-supportive. Organic in construction and material, it’s a beautiful collection that is at once simple and intricate.

Bye Bye Old Lightbulb

The latest addition to Hall Design’s bespoke line of luminaires, the Mise En Abyme lamp series represents the archetype of the incandescent lightbulb, paying homage to the classic object that is quickly being phased out. The wooden, bulb shaped covering is suspended by wire from a wall-mount and is easily adjustable to the user’s height preference. It’s a clever foreshadowing of the fate of the incandescent bulb, and will serve as a reminder years after they’re gone!

Light Duality

The Glint lamp is a simple two-part design that combines a single unattached bulb with an angular metal structure for directional light or subtle ambiance. Two magnets embedded in the bulb’s cork socket allow it to be positioned above, below, behind or anywhere else the user chooses. The metal structure is ideal for holding books or magazines – simply position the light to your liking for the perfect glow when it’s time to read.

Clustered Lighting

Though at first glance it looks like a singular unit, the Square Bell hanging pendant is actually 5 lamps in 1. Smaller, pyramid-shaped shades surround a larger central shade, creating a functional cluster that is at once united and separate. The unique placement and angle of each individual shade casts expansive directional illumination, making it an ideal choice for lighting larger spaces.

Glowin’ Garlic

The Garlic Lamp (as you might have guessed by the moniker) is a simple and literal interpretation of its namesake. The shape of the pungent bulb actually makes for a great pendant shade that produces downward directional lighting as well as an ambient glow through the translucent material. Ok, ok… so it’s not for everybody, but I can totally see it in an Italian restaurant or maybe a country kitchen!
