College Ruled Genius – Part 2

The Laser Cap is a good attempt at innovation; it basically involves a laser fitted cap that beams out the ruled lines seen on a sheet of paper. Why do we need this innovation? Perhaps to reduce the effects of inking the paper, improving our handwriting and making the text look neat. The only other reason that I can think of is a bit of clever fun, that acts as an inspiration for some bigger innovation.

Bright lights for projector-friendly bike lovers

It’s time to get in the laser-projector zone with none other than a design by the name of “Bike Zone”, complete with red beams for signaling. If you want to turn left, this beast of a light shines several arrow-looking symbols down at the ground to the left – the same is true of the right – imagine that! The only ones we worry for now are the squirrels – watch your eyes, guys!

This design creates a one-meter “safety zone” for the cyclist with lights that allow drivers at night to tell where the cyclist is going. Animated signal action makes for twice the safety and clarity in representation of direction while the whole design is contained in a tiny backpack-storage-ready container.

Icy Tech

Designed to withstand the most extreme of conditions, Nevero is a portable laser based 3D measurement system for surveying glaciers. The technology warrants an extremely precise scan of fragile climate indicators. With an emphasis on lightness and comfortable portability, the design makes it easier for scientists and expedition crews to walk for miles up mountains to reach the scanning locations.

The device itself is divided into two parts. One is the laser scanner and the other is a bag which the scanner is transported in. The bag is a hard-shell concept based on carbon-fiber to make it as light as possible. It also has side-pockets for the extra storage of additional equipment.

The laser scanner has an integrated tripod which lifts the laser head up to 110 cm. It can be easily assembled with just two buttons for each leg. The laser head itself is protected by a glass that allows a 360 degree scan. The glass, in turn, is protected against damage by a ring of carbon-fiber that slides down when in use. On the backside of the scan device, there is a display for adjustments that is protected by its own keyboard. The link element on the back side is the safety feature that insures that the scanner and the bag are strongly connected and can only be separated by pressing the two big release buttons.

Miller-Urey Bong, 2010

Bring your own combustible material to an installation recreating the origin of life
miller-urey2.jpg

A scientific art installation involving high-powered lasers and combustive materials, Miller-Urey Bong is a BYOW (Bring Your Own Whatever) exhibition based on the 1952 Miller-Urey experiments that attempted to prove the genesis of life on Earth.

“We really don’t know what the Earth was like three or four billion years ago,” the late scientist Stanley L. Miller said more than forty years later. “So there are all sorts of theories and speculations.”

miller-urey3.jpg

Theories and speculation aside, the famous experiment remains a fascinating spectacle when recreated, which the artistic team of Paul B. Davis (of the geek collective/record label Beige) and Aids-3D have rather cheekily done. Visitors to London’s Seventeen Gallery will have their chance to interact with the experiment that uses a searing-hot Class IV laser, injecting energy into the system to simulate “lightning” and “rainfall” and the other theoretical conditions that the Almighty presumably used during his own ill-conceived experiment to create life. Guests can take part by vaporizing their “Whatever” in the device, orally sampling the contents as long—as they also contribute “user provided suction.”

The playfully titled Miller-Urey Bong installation runs from 7 October 2010 through 13 November 2010 at Seventeen Gallery in Shoreditch.
