The Transformative Power of Personal Projects
Posted in: UncategorizedBored with his ad agency gig and the uninspiring work he was producing, Ji Lee – now Creative Director of Google Creative Lab – decided to take matters into his own hands in 2002. The result was the ad-spoofing Bubble Project, in which Lee placed blank speech bubbles on ads around New York City. The masses responded and the project went viral, gaining Lee recognition and ultimately forwarding his professional career. Here, Lee talks about how he created, financed, and marketed the project single-handedly.

Li states:
The digital age has transformed the ways in which we communicate with each other. The combination of technology and power of information brings new ways on HOW, WITH WHOM and WHY we communicate. Jordan Seiler’s “New York Street Advertising Takeover” hit the streets over the weekend when over 120 illegal billboards throughout the city were white washed by dozens of volunteers. Later in the day over 80 artists transformed the blank canvasses with original artwork.
NYSAT was organized as a reaction to the hundreds of billboards that are not registered with the city, and therefore are illegal. While illegal, these violations are not being prosecuted by the City of New York, allowing the billboard companies to garner huge profits by cluttering our outdoor space with intrusive and ugly ads.

WTC Logo Preservation Project
Posted in: UncategorizedNew York-based designer Ji Lee has launched a project to document logos that use the former World Trade Center in a New York skyline.
After 9/11, I started to photograph and archive these logos in order to preserve the many different graphic expressions of these important historical buildings.
To see the full collection you know the drill.
