Outline Editions: London show and pop-up store

Outline Editions has commissioned a selection of leading British image makers – including James Jarvis (his Sphere With Block II, shown, above), Anthony Burrill, Supermundane, Kate Moross and LIzzie Finn – to each create a new image, inspired by the city of London…

Jan Kallwejt

Jon Burgerman’s Inkstrumental iPhone app

ustwo – the app developer that gave us Mouth Off and also the Granimator iPad app – has just released Inkstrumental, the interactive fruit of a collaboration with illustrator Jon Burgerman…

The idea for Inkstrumental is simple and fun – users ‘audition’ various Burgerman characters, each of which makes a particular sound (could be percussive, bassy, vocal or a bit synthy) when you tap him. So you decide which eight characters you want in your Inkstrumental band by scrolling along and pressing each character to see what they sound like on the screen below…

Then, with your eight characters selected you go to a screen like the one below where a looping beat plays (you get to choose the backing beat too). Simply press a character at just the moment when you’d like its sound to be added to the back beat et voila, you’re making music!

Once you’re happy with your new doctored beat, you can press the TV button on the screen and the band members are transported to a stage where they proudly perform your tune for you. You can send this film to the Inkstrumental YouTube channel or simply show your friends on your phone when you see them.

Here’s a short film of someone actually playing with Inkstrumental to help you get a better idea of the fun that can be had:

Jon Burgerman and ustwo are presenting Inkstrumental tomorrow evening in a special talk at 7pm at the Apple Store on Regent Street in London. Visit the apple website to find out more: apple.com/uk/retail/regentstreet/

AND, fans of Burgerman’s work might be interested to know he’s got a solo exhibition entitled Brain Drain, currently running at Winchester Discovery Centre until July 7. Here are some images:

Classic World Cup moments on T-shirts

We received a batch of A3 posters from a company called Tiny Industry last week – each of which shows off an illustration that appears on one of their Foot-T range of T-shirts that celebrates memorable moments from World Cups past…

The top left image celebrates the moment that Pickles the dog found the missing Jules Rimet cup in a bush in 1966 (clever Pickles) and the top right reminds us English folk rather painfully of the “hand of god” incident where Maradona managed to pull off the most sensational, unpenalised handball of all time.

And here’s the moment Cameroon player Roger Milla (the oldest player ever to play in a World Cup at the time) ran to the corner flag to do a celebratory dance after scoring (which he did on several occasions during the tournament).

And also an illustration that refreshes the more recent incident involving France’s Zinadine Zidane and Italy’s Marco Materazzi. It was the World Cup final between the two nations in 2006 and Materazzi insulted the Frenchman – possibly mentioning his mother and / or sister. Zidane’s response was to produce a headbutt to Materazzi’s chest that took away the breath of everyone who saw the incident.

You can order the T-shirts (for just over £15) from Tiny Industry’s website (tinyindustry.com), where you can also see how the T-shirt graphics look on T-shirts:

and the site reveals another moment which can be treasured in T-shirt format – England’s Gazza having a bit of a blub:

Mill Co the show

The Russian Club in Hackney is currently playing host to the debut London show of Mill Co and its eclectic bunch of designers, photographers, artists and illustrators. All around the theme of community

Mill Co is another take on the collective idea. It’s run by Claire Martin and Liz Birkbeck, two friends originally from Rochdale, also home to the Co-operative movement. The latter, they say, inspired Mill Co’s collaborative approach, which they describe as “a virtual mill and online community of freelance and independent creative collaborators”. Clients can draw on this pool of talent on projects which Mill Co will manage.

The show features work from various Mill Co peeople including Suzie Webb (top) and Ant Baena (below)

Jane Mount at The Curiosity Shoppe

This Friday is the opening of “Ideal Bookshelves” at The Curiosity Shoppe in San Francisco. It features paintings, prints, and postcards by Jane Mount. (what a diverse and creative portfolio!)

“Many of the pieces in the show represent Ideal Bookshelves submitted by friends, both from San Francisco and around the country. It’s an amazing and beautiful collection, and it’s been endlessly fascinating to check out all the great books people are into these days.”
