Hot In The Hive: Clinique Vitamin C Lip Smoothies

imageOne of the beauty world’s biggest frustrations (other than, you know, constantly having to shave your legs and pluck your eyebrows), is the concept of products made to look, smell, and sound good enough to eat… but actually aren’t edible. What a tease! In fact, one of my friends learned the hard way that the Body Shop’s Nut Butter lotion really doesn’t taste as good as the name and scent implies. What makes the Clinique Vitamin C Lip Smoothies slightly more tolerable than other hunger-inducing beauty products, however, despite my sudden urge to hop over to the corner Jamba Juice, is that the brush-on lip color actually contains all the moisturizing properties and conditioning antioxidants of a hydrating smoothie without the sticky-sweet fruit flavoring that would normally tempt you to lick it off your lips all day long. True, I’d have an easier time curbing my hunger pangs if the bright shades were named after inedible flowers instead of juicy just-ripened fruit, but at least I’m not tempted to eat it instead of wear it!

Hot In The Hive: iTwinge iPhone Keyboard

imageI think I’m one of the few people left in this world who still refuse to join the iPhone cult. I’ll admit it, sometimes I get a little jealous when I see people at the gym listening to their music and making calls from one sleek device while I’m trying to juggle my PDA and my prehistoric video iPod… but I’m sorry — I NEED a keyboard! REAL buttons that you push. Not a touchscreen with pretend keys and a “word predictor” that tries to guess what I’m trying to type through the inevitable typos. It shouldn’t have to guess! Apparently our friends over at Mobile Mechatronics had the same frustrations, because they came up with one seriously genius idea: the iTwinge. It’s an attachable keyboard that simply slips on over your iPhone, providing REAL push-able buttons for more accurate (and quicker) texting and e-mailing. Of course, I’m not sure if the convenience of having keys is worth having to constantly take the device on and off whenever you’re done with an e-mail or text… so while this clever add-on is definitely worth the splurge for curious iPhone owners, I’m not sure if it’s cool enough to make a convert out of a Palm girl like me!

Hot In The Hive: Kymera Magic Wand

imageIf you’re a Harry Potter fan and you’ve got multiple remote controls sitting on your coffee table (or lost in the crevices of your sofa) then here’s something right up your alley. The Kymera magic wand may look like a prop straight out of Hogwarts, but you can actually use it to create some magic of your own! It is a universal remote with an accelerometer inside, where you can program 13 different functions activated by gestures such as rotating, flicking, and tapping. Since you program the gestures yourself and an available practice mode, there’s no need to be Hermione Granger to get to the channel you want. That means you can put away all those remote controls and replace it with something totally fun, unique, and will mystify anyone who encounters it. It’s currently available for pre-order and ships October 1st, which means you’ll totally have it in time to impress your guests at your Halloween party!

Hot In The Hive: Social Media Throw Pillows

imageYou could say I’m on top of the whole social media trend. With Twitter, Facebook, Myspace and other sites, I’m always in the know about what my friends are doing, the latest insider sales, and celeb gossip (sometimes right from the source!). My laptop and iPhone are littered with apps that are supposed to streamline my time on the Web sites, but sometimes I still get overwhelmed. Sure I get stressed when Britney doesn’t personally reply to my tweet or I consider unfriending someone on Facebook, but at the end of the day, these Web sites are just for fun and we shouldn’t forget the power of face-to-face interactions. So when I need to relax I think I’ll reach for a social media pillow straight from Etsy user Craftsquatch! I know what you’re thinking: a social media pillow? They’re super fun handmade pillows with the logos of your favorite Web sites and even applications– like Photoshop! So the next time Facebook stops loading or the Twitter fail whale shows up, go ahead and hug your throw pillow and think of the days when they didn’t exist… but be sure to update your status once it’s back up!

Hot In The Hive: Bluetooth Mini Phone

imageDon’t you love laughing at the crazy-looking people on the street who look like they’re talking to themselves but are really just using a handy-dandy hands-free device? Or how about those folks driving on the freeway who look like they’re bopping and singing along to the radio but are really just making a business call from that huge hunk of Bluetooth-activated plastic attached to their ear? If you’re considering your own mobile accompaniment but don’t want to look like you’re deep in conversation with the voices inside your own head, look no further than the Bluetooth Mini Phone. Shaped like an actual handheld receiver, you can wear the phone like a semi-stylish pendant necklace & then when you want to make a call, you just pick it up and press call and start chatting! Oh. Wait. So it’s not actually hands-free… but it’s still pretty cute, and a clever sort of gimmick. And, uh, a great conversation starter?

Hot In The Hive: Film Roll Alarm Clock

imageImmersed in a digital age where Flip camcorders and iPhone cameras and Twitpic rule the world of picture-taking, it can be easy to lose touch with the retro photo technology of yore (or even of just a couple months ago). Celebrate the way things were with this Film Roll Alarm Clock. Perfect for the film buff or photography major (or for anyone who accidentally smashed their old alarm clock in a half-asleep AM rage), this roll of film won’t help you take any quality pictures, but it will help you wake up and get yourself to class on time! After all, considering the alarm clock is just about the most loathsome timepiece in existence, you might as well make the dreaded early-morning blaring more tolerable with a dose of cuteness!

Hot In The Hive: Hi-Fi Hi-Light

imageFrom eye shadow sticks that double as an eye liner to dresses that can be worn in multiple ways, I’m a total sucker for things that can multi-task. With limited space in my room (because it’s filled with clothes, of course!) I’ve got to make my decor count. Lately, I’ve been listening to my music through my dinky laptop speakers and when my desk lamp finally blew out, I had the perfect replacement in mind. The Hi-Fi Hi-Light from PB Teen is a desk lamp, a charging station for your iPod, as well as a speaker! Talk about getting more bang for your buck. While it’s great in my tiny room, this is also a good choice for an office or dorm room. With the desk space you saved by not getting a separate speaker system and desk lame, you now have more room for your accessories!

Hot In The Hive: Bin Bin Wastebasket

imageThey say beauty comes from within, so that’s why we try to eat fruits and vegetables, drink lots of water, and get a good night’s sleep every night. So it’s no wonder why our hair is naturally shiny, skin is glowing and eyes bright… right? Ok, maybe we could eat better to look better but that can wait after the frenzy of Fashion Week is over. In the meantime, I’ve decided to take a tiny break from all the fuss about the runway and thinking about my home instead. The Bin Bin Wastebasket is a perfect example of the inside contents looking like the outside! Like the crumpled rough drafts of your next Great American Novel or those pesky credit card bills, this wastebasket looks like a giant piece of crumpled paper. Put this in your office and everyone will know where to throw away the junk mail (instead of leaving it on your desk) or it could be a stylish umbrella catcher on a rainy day. The possibilities are endless with this unique design!

Price: $54

Hot In The Hive: DigiDudes Portable Tripods

imageAnyone who ever goes out on the town with a gaggle of gal-pals knows that before you leave the house, you need to take a mandatory self-timer group pic. Now, thanks to the DigiDudes Portable Camera Tripods, you don’t have to balance your digital camera on random textbooks and appliances to get just the right angle for you, or kick one unlucky lady out of the picture to just take the freakin’ photo so you can leave already. Digidudes are small and portable and can be attached to your keys or your camera bag, and simply unscrew to serve as a tripod for your digital camera, camcorder, Flip, or what-have-you for stable picture-taking on the go. They even come in a variety of colors and “characters” — like Pinky Scorsese, G-Bling-Money-Son, and Snot Buster (um, ew) — to serve as the perfect portable pal for you and your picture-taking needs!

Hot In The Hive: Golden Sparkle Sauce

imageI know, the name sounds delicious… but you can’t eat this sauce! Golden Sparkle Sauce by Pop Beauty comes in what appears to be a puff paint squeeze tube, but it’s actually a powerful weapon in maintaining smudge-free eye makeup! The shimmery substance can be applied as a layer on your lid over shadow and liner to seal eye makeup for a twinkling waterproof finish, or it can be mixed with loose glitter or pigment to serve as a long-lasting adhesive for otherwise hard-to-apply loose powder. The result? Budge-proof shadow and liner with a little dash of extra dazzle. Sparkling magic in a bottle!
