Cool Hunting teams up with Rickshaw for this special CH Edition messenger bag and iPad case
ched-rick6.jpg

Exceptionally durable, Rickshaw waterproof bags are designed specifically for the active urban dweller. The San Francisco-based brand not only keeps us impressed with their ability to make long-lasting, thoughtfully designed bags, but also their commitment to sustainability supersedes most environmentally-conscious labels. For example, Rickshaw produces their Zero Messenger bag using domestically sourced materials, recyclable nylon and designs it around the cutting process to reduce material waste.

ched-rick2.jpg ched-rick1.jpg

We like this bag so much that for our collection of Cool Hunting collaborations we worked with Rickshaw to design a customized CH Edition. What’s more, we produced a limited-edition iPad case too, also featuring a fetching green interior.

Nine Giftable Spirits

Make holidays more merry with beautiful bottles of booze
whistlepig-whisk1.jpg

With small batch spirits and one-of-a-kind bottles on the rise, an increasing number of producers are literally bringing something new to the table.

Whether it’s a 100-proof rye whiskey or champagne encased in copper you’re after, these boozy options will make you welcome at the door of any holiday party. Pair any of these drinks with an appropriate literary choice authored by a famous drunk (Hunter S. Thompson, Dylan Thomas, Hemingway, etc.) or with a book like 101 Whiskies to Try Before You Die for a gift that will please any lush on your list.

For more, see our piece on giftable spirits from 2009.

Aged for at least ten years in American oak barrels, the creators of WhistlePig Straight Rye Whiskey hand-bottle this 100-proof spirit on a former dairy farm in Shoreham, VT. The result is both strong and well balanced, picking up fans with each sip. Pick it up from Drink Up NY for the sale price of $70.

booze2010-10.jpg

Joe Keeper at Silver Lake, CA’s Bar Keeper recommends Karlsson’s Gold Vodka, which is made from fingerling potatoes, as a gift. He loves the “nice viscosity” and the pepper grinder that comes with it adds a fresh-ground peppery zip. It sells from
Park Avenue Liquor Shop
for $36.

Made from 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay grapes, Beau Joie’s Rosé bottle comes beautifully wrapped in 2nd-generation copper scrap. The knight-inspired copper armor helps keep the champagne cold longer by eliminating the need for an ice bucket. Get it from Wally’s for $110.

Joe describes Cardamaro Amaro as “funky and delicious.” Infused with two odd ingredients—cardoon, a relative of the artichoke, and Blessed Thistle, an herb used to treat the bubonic plague during the Middle Ages—the amaro is produced in Italy’s Piemonte region by the winemaker Giovanni Bosca. Vino has it for $23.

booze2010-6.jpg

Celebrating their 10th Anniversary, the small batch whisky makers at Compass Box have made a name for themselves in the world of whisky. This holiday season, the 10th Anniversary bottle of Hedonism (£200) comes from a single cask of 38 year old Invergordon. Compass Box has combined Highland, Islay and Island single malts to create Flaming Heart, now bottled with a new label designed by Alex Machin (£72). Additionally, the name for Double Single (£100) refers to a whisky being comprised of one single malt and one grain. All limited editions, they sell online from Compass Box.

booze2010-1.jpg

When we asked Michel Dozois from Névé Luxury Ice for boozy holiday gifts, he immediately recommended Crusoe Spiced Organic Rum. Made with organic molasses and fair trade sugar cane, Dozois loves to create cocktail recipes with this spicy spirit that also incorporates cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, vanilla and orange. The bottle is available from
K & L Wine Merchants
for $32.

Another recommendation from Dozois, the award-winning bitters by Bitter Truth come in flavors like Old Time Aromatic, Grapefruit, Ghocolate and Greole (($17 each). Perfect as a gift for a friend perfecting their own cocktail recipes, you can also bring the traveler’s set on the plane ($20) to calm inflight nerves. Get them from Drink Up NY.

CH Editions

From honey bear bongs to portable Bluetooth speakers, Cool Hunting’s limited-edition series of collaborations

This year, Cool Hunting teamed up with select favorite brands—innovators in technology, design, fashion, and perhaps most fondly, food—to create limited-edition versions of their much-beloved products, available exclusively through our online store and at our pop up for Gap.

ch-marvin-1.jpg ch-freehands-1.jpg

When we learned that 160-year-old Swiss watchmaker Marvin was undergoing a revival, we worked with their designer to put a CH spin on their newest style, the Malton 160 Cushion. Our interpretation ($1,250) features green accents and is signed and numbered, as well as engraved with “Toujours Plus” (a riff on one of our taglines, “Always More”). Already sold out, the last chance to get this sleek watch is through our upcoming charity auction. (Stay tuned for details, and check out our recent video on Marvin to learn more about the brand that supplied JFK with gifts for Marilyn.)

Created by CH founder Josh Rubin and his father, the tech-friendly glove brand Freehands came out with a CH Edition ($80) this season. Like all Freehands, these are designed to keep your hands warm while using your mobile phone, camera, iPod and more, but this luxurious version is made from 80% pure cashmere in gray-on-gray stripes, and features the new magnetic design that discreetly secures the finger and thumb flaps back out of the way.

ch-outlier-1.jpg

We collaborated with Brooklyn brand Outlier on this Swiss wool hat, an accessory technically designed for bike riding in less-than-cheery weather. Completely wind-resistant, highly water-resistant and with a brim that perfectly shields a rider’s brow, the stylish cap ($90) comes in three colors, keeping you protected from the elements without ruining your holiday party entrance.

ch-rickshaw-1.jpg

Maintaining their minimalist design, local sourcing, and small-footprint credo, Rickshaw created one of their bestselling Zero Waste bags for Cool Hunting. Featuring a green interior and a black exterior, our exclusive multifunctional Zero bag ($150) and its matching CH Edition felt and nylon iPad case ($30) keep your precious goods protected on the go.

ch-zillions-1.jpg

Already fans of their caps and belts, we commissioned the creative Tokyo-based label Zillion to completely cover a series of vintage skateboard decks in their dead-stock kimono fabrics. The limited-edition collection was crafted in two styles—with wheels ($850) or without ($750) —each in beautiful patterns that look fantastic hanging on any wall, especially when grouped together.

ch-platner-1.jpg

Local artisan Jill Platner (another craftsperson who’s long been on our list of favorites) created a series of 12 of her signature rawhide bracelets exclusively for Cool Hunting ($205). Handcrafted in New York for nearly two decades, Platner’s jewelry features her trademark sterling silver toggle clasps, but our version comes in a longer bracelet length and a custom dove gray leather.

We’ll be hosting an event premiering our video on Jill in our pop up shop for the Gap soon, check back for details.

Handmade from locally-sourced vintage fabrics in one of the few remaining factories in Manhattan’s Garment District, 3sixteen‘s four patterns of classic ties for Cool Hunting ($80) boast clean lines that demonstrate the menswear company’s extreme attention to detail and craftsmanship.

ch-mast-esque2.jpg

Other collaborations include the pairing of Brooklyn chocolate purveyors Mast Brothers with San Francisco fruit gastronome June Taylor to create an out-of-this-world artisanal chocolate bar ($10), a beyond delicious Happy Goat scotch caramel sauce, an Esque honey bear water pipe ($360), and Good Fight’s herbal smoking blend. Stay tuned for more in the upcoming days on those Cool Hunting exclusives!

ch-jamboxjawbone-1.jpg

What Wood You Say

Custom wooden messages by Chicago artist Sighn
woodsay3.jpg

As if his ambitious ITSOK project—hand-cutting one million wooden ornaments with the slogan “It’s OK”—wasn’t enough, the aptly-named artist Sighn is putting the creativity in your hands with his new project What Wood You Say. For a limited time, Sighn will carve out your favorite saying or wisdom-nugget for a tailormade art object or personalized gift.

woodsay1.jpg woodsay2.jpg

Sighn put it simply, recently explaining, “I’ve been getting requests for a long time, that I haven’t been able to make time for. This concept standardizes the production, making it easier for me to create custom pieces for people. I’ve also been doing some larger paragraph pieces for collectors, and have really gotten the font/way I make it down pat.”

woodsay4.jpg

He will be accepting orders for his hand-crafted commissions through November and December 2010. Each signed and dated work sells for $5 a character (with a 50 character maximum) from Multi Polar Projects. To see some of Sighn’s more conceptual typographic works, check out his woodcuts at Allegoric Space.

Unique LA

Indie design powerhouses join forces for a new shop in L.A.’s furniture marketplace H.D. Buttercup
uniquela1.jpg

As a one-stop furnishings marketplace, H.D. Buttercup’s enormous Culver City showroom filled with furnishings, art, rugs, bedding and accessories leaves most interiors junkies wanting for little. Last Friday saw the launch of the one thing the complex might be missing with a new 3,700 square-foot section bringing together the indie fashion of Apartment 3 and designers from the gift fair Unique LA. We checked in with Sonja Rasula, who founded Unique in 2008, and Kristin Knauff of Apartment 3 while they were setting up their H.D. Buttercup digs.

uniquela2.jpg

Originally founded in 2003 as a boutique on La Brea, Apartment 3 has developed into a full-service fashion production company. Unique LA, one of the biggest shows for independent crafts in the country, features wares made by area designers and encourages the consumption of local products. Together at H.D. Buttercup, the two brands have created a forum to shop for children’s and baby products, clothing, art, accessories, edibles, gifts and more.

uniquela3.jpg

In store, Rasula is proud to offer designs by Sub_urban riot, Chemline, 28 Squares, Eva Franco, sugarhigh + Lovestoned , Detroit Sprinkles, Maiden Voyage, Misha Lulu, Rock Socks and others. We spotted the hand-woven scarves by Loomlab that interpret Braille, computer circuits, and QR coding into the pattern and color palette. The Original Record Wallets fashion leather and nylon into billfolds sporting images of Prince, The Clash or astronauts.

uniquela4.jpg

Apartment 3 collections span denim, bowties, vintage clothing and footwear, including exclusive pieces from Smoke & Mirrors that hang on one of the industrial metal racks. Both companies plan to showcase many of their favorite designers in a carefully-curated collection of merchandise.

101 Whiskies to Try Before You Die

From Benromach to Yoichi, a definitive guide to whisky by one of the industry’s more illustrious tipplers
101whiskey111.jpg

In his new book “101 Whiskies to Try Before you Die” whisky expert Ian Buxton poses the fun challenge of learning about whisky by drinking a lot of whisky. Having the enviable job of working in the whisky industry for over two decades, as a consultant, Marketing Director of a world-famous single malt, and builder of several distillery visitor centers, he learned the ins and outs of whisky and the people who make it. In this book, he shares his wisdom and some entertaining details along the way.

Over a golden dram of Highland Park 50 at its Harrods launch in London earlier this year, we talked scotch with the book’s illustrious author.

Buxton’s love of whisky led him to write this book not as “an awards list,” but rather as the definitive “guide to 101 whiskies that enthusiasts should try” to complete their education. He focuses generally on bottles that are neither obscure nor prohibitively expensive. Buxton’s love of whisky jumps off of the page with each story he has to tell about the geography of Scotland, the history of distilleries, the stories behind some of the unique companies that create award-winning blends. Of the whiskies included in the book, 72 are from Scotland while the rest hail from Ireland, England, Japan, Sweden, Canada, India and the U.S.

101whisky3.jpg

From insider details about distilleries he visited on his honeymoon to honest disclosures about companies he worked for, 101 Whiskies is full of anecdotes that make what could otherwise be a dry who’s-who into a page-turner. From three types of the brown tipple created in small batches by Compass Box to impressions of the impossibly hip Monkey Shoulder site, he covers it all with wit and a balanced perspective.

While some brands are accessible like the Macallan 10 and Makers Mark, more exclusive labels make the cut when Buxton feels they’re worth the money, which includes Johnny Walker’s Blue Label George V Edition and the surprisingly delicate Highland Park 40. All of this variety turns the book into a whisky-fueled journey through tasting these 101 whiskies into both a inspiring travel guide and an education in scotch, whisky, whiskey, bourbon, rye and new make spirit (whisky before it’s been aged).

101whisky2.jpg

Buxton always makes sure to prioritize the actual liquor itself, adding his own DIY suggestions for some of the packaging, such as the posh wooden box for the Dewar’s Signature that could become “a handy coffin for a pet hamster or gerbil.” Though he’s similarly skeptical about Basil Hayden’s copper belt, he likes the contents.

Buxton does have a few preferred places for drinking whisky, including Edinburgh’s Bramble Bar, The Pot Still in Gasgow, the Highlander in Craigellachie, NYC’s The Brandy Library and in London, The Athenaeum Hotel or Albannach and Salt. And if there was to be a 102nd bottle? “Probably some moonshine from the hills, but we don’t want everyone to know and the cops to visit the guy.”

“101 Whiskies to Try Before You Die” sells online from Amazon and will be available December 2010 from Powells . Sláinte!
