Timeless Combinations

Markus Johansson’s Colibri chair transforms the inspiration from Nordic stick back chairs into a contemporary modernist expression – easy-going, yet classical. Furthermore, the design empowers its owner to take part in the construction process and choose from four different bases, four different backs, four different armrests, or even four different seats in textile or bonded leather. No matter the combination, there’s no going wrong!

OSB-eautiful Desk

The Viva Desk merges computerized manufacturing with artisanry to make the most of its eco-friendly materials. Composed primarily of OSB (most commonly used for industrial packaging) the material is transformed and reused to decrease each objects environmental footprint while providing a unique and distinct look. For a crafted touch, a hand-knitted suede string intertwines the upper and lower centerpieces acting not only as a decorative element but to create a segmented shelf for books & other items.

Prismatic Perfection

The Prism table tells a story. No matter what angle you look from, it will always show you something new! Like a prism refracting light, this table takes lines of color, emerging from a single bar, and stretches them across its frame. By weaving and twisting its linear geometry, the internal structure transforms from point to point. The maze of mixing colors creates surfaces that together form a beautiful whole.

Squirmable Seating

There’s something very honest and friendly about this simplistic yet inviting chair and footrest combination called Nuno. Everyone knows that when it comes to seating, true ergonomics mean you can adjust the position of your body and the chair will follow suit… not the other way around. That’s precisely what it achieves with thoughtful construction applied to otherwise basic materials. Check it out!

Studies have shown that ergonomic seating comfort is achieved through the connection between movements and changes in body position. In response to this, a simple bench offers your body the ability to sit in a way that is comfortable to you. The centerpiece of the chair is comprised of a flexible directional back made of felt. It is designed in a way that allows for varying positions and is therefore very adaptable. The adjustable backrest supports and warms the lower back, providing greater support.

Side table extends from base of Rise sofa by Note Design Studio

The wooden base of this sofa by Swedish firm Note Design Studio extends outwards to become a side table.

The low table was formed by continuing the ash wood platform out from one end of the sofa, which is part of Note‘s Rise collection designed for Swedish furniture brand Fogia.

“The integrated side table becomes a bridge between the piece of furniture and the rest of the room,” said the designers. “A surface for a still life, a favourite book, plants or whatever you choose to have close at hand.”

Rounded soft cushions covered in quilted upholstery sit on top of the base. The collection is named Rise because the seat backs are shaped to resemble the sun coming up over the horizon.

Note created the range for use in both domestic and commercial settings. The high back is designed to shield the sitters from an open-plan office space that could be situated behind.

“It’s a sofa with is own expression,” Note’s Cristiano Pigazzini told Dezeen. “We got inspired by the shape of the rising sun to create a piece of furniture that stand alone, a elegant centrepiece for both home and public spaces.”

The sofas are available with or without arms, and the range also includes a footstool with a matching base and fabric.

The series will be on show at the Stockholm Furniture and Lighting Fair and Note’s open exhibition at the Old Luma Factory during Stockholm Design Week, which starts on Monday.

Famous modernist chair shapes merged into a bar stool by Eugeni Quitllet

Eugeni Quitllet adapts Masters chair into a bar stool

Maison&Objet 2014: Catalan designer Eugeni Quitllet has taken the silhouettes of famous modernist chairs and amalgamated them into the back of this bar stool.

Eugeni Quitllet‘s Masters Stool retains the sinuous forms of the chair he created with French designer Philippe Starck for Italian plastics company Kartell.

The three strands that form the back are derived from the recognisable outlines of Arne Jacobsen’s Egg chair, Charles Eames’ DSW seat and Eero Saarinen’s Tulip design. These intertwined shapes create a back support and armrests that flow into the seat and legs.

“The stool version is available with longer legs, the seat is smaller, but the inimitable graphic hallmark of its frame coming from the interweaving of three silhouettes is the same,” said the designer.

The proportions of the original chair have been altered to incorporate the smaller seat and the longer legs are braced by a square ring close to the ground, which doubles as a footrest.

Available in a range of colours, the bar stool can be used both indoors or outdoors. It was launched at the Maison&Objet trade fair outside Paris, which finished earlier this week.

Master Trestles

Bloesem Living | Master and Master trestles

Many of you might have seen the beautiful stackable diamond trestles I got for the new Bloesem creative space in Singapore via my instagram feed. It was a bit of a risk ordering them online and to never have seen them in real but I followed my gut and went ahead … I could not have made a better choice!

Master&Master from Czech Republic is the place I am talking about. Michal Malasek is the designer and Master&Master gave the best customer service ever! The diamond trestles as they are called is the perfect solution for every space I love the openness and lightness they give to our new studio and shop here in Singapore.

Probably two weeks from now we will officially open the creative space. We are still styling and placing the goods. But it is a dream come true seeing all the work by my favorite artists and designers coming together so nicely.

You might wonder where the amazing photography comes from … well I asked Frieda Mellema whether I could buy some of her work and portray it in our space, luckily she said yes! What do you think you like it too?  On the table … flowers from Jurianne Matter, vintage glass bottles and stationery and some Birds from Keecie waiting for a new owner!

Bloesem Living | Master and Master trestles

Here are a few images of the trestles in our space, but Zara and I thought why not do a small round-up of some of our favorite pictures with trestle-samples.

The amazing things about trestles as they table legs are many. So how about we list them out?

1. They look absolutely amazing (duh!) and don't feel as "heavy" as thick table legs, giving the room a less cluttered feel, if you catch my drift.

2. They come in so many different styles, from minimal to rustic to suit whatever look you are going for.

Bloesem Living | Master and Master trestles

3. Allows for portability. You can easily pack up the trestles and table top and shift it to wherever you'd like. Great for mobile work stations.

4. Setting up a desk with trestles can cost way less than buying an actual desk. You know the kind with drawers, and is huge, and you have to get delivered from the store by strong movers, that kind of desk.

And the list goes on and on, but the best part is that there is such a huge selection to choose from, even Ikea sells them and the cheapest ones go for just SGD10 per trestle!

Colonel launches collection based on nomadic furniture at Maison&Objet

Maison&Object 2014 French design duo Colonel has launched its third furniture collection, featuring items based on camping equipment (+ slideshow).

Third furniture collection by Colonel

Designers Isabelle Gilles and Yann Poncelet of Colonel have released a series of new products and updated items in their previous collection, released at the same exhibition last year.

“[We] drew this new collection in the same spirit as the previous one, which makes the brand signature – light wood, patterns and fresh colours reminding travel and holidays throughout the year,” said the designers.

The two sliding doors of a small beech wood sideboard are cut with perpendicular slots, which create a grid pattern when they overlap.

Designed to look like a shepherd’s stool, the three-legged Bob wooden coffee table with a curved lip comes in beech or light grey and at two heights.

The Swarm lamps comprise a metal frame covered with a layer of coloured fabric behind a honeycomb mesh, pulled in at the top and bottom with drawstrings. The lamps sit on three spindly legs, either long or short, and also come as a pendant version.

A piece of wood veneer curved into a cylinder is hand painted with watercolours and mounted on a metal frame to form another lamp called Dowood.

The collection also includes a set of turned wood containers with patterned fabric rims and mirrors with curved ladder-like metal frames.

Updated items include the Caracas chair – a contemporary version of a 1960s camping chair – that has been revamped with new graphics for the seat material.

Also new fabrics are available for the tiltable faceted shade of the Faces floor lamp, which has a branch halfway up its stem for hanging coils of the colourful cord.

The full collection is on display at Maison&Objet, taking place outside Paris until tomorrow.
