Deceiving Softness

Inspired by the caterpillar’s many co-functional legs, this stool by the same name features interwoven plywood pieces that move and reshape to adjust to the seated person. Though it appears rigid, the design is unexpectedly flexible and elastic as the links (held together with bungee cord) mold to the user’s body.

Functional Beauty

The AERO chair’s simple interlocking technique makes for a functional and downright gorgeous design that’s sure to withstand time. The design, composed of just 2 pieces, can be assembled simply by sliding the back/front-leg component into the slit of the seat/back-leg piece. Its unique support system, immediately apparent in its aesthetic, makes it just a little easier to store and transport.

Wall Saver

A floating bookshelf can be a great storage solution and minimal accent to any wall, but not every wall is prepared to hold the supports that the shelf rests on. This design, called OPEN, is a shelving system that achieves the same floating aesthetic without the need for wall mounts. The shelving boards dangle on super-thin but strong fishing line that mounts to the ceiling. Better yet, the shelves can be adjusted without having to remove and replace hardware.

Studio Allt

Slovakian designers simply making all that they like

by Adam Štěch

allt-1.jpg

Based in the Slovak capital of Bratislava, the young designers behind the Allt studio produce simple-yet-poetic conceptual furniture and lighting, aiming to create a personal world of friendly products with strong backstories.

The Allt studio—whose name offers a simple abbreviation of their tagline, “all that we like to do”—was established in 2011 by Peter Simonik and Elena Bolceková. Simonik received his degree from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava, while Bolceková finished her studies at the Institute of Industrial Design at the Faculty of Architecture in 2011. Both of these creative individuals personify different approaches to art and design, and together they make a strong team that produces beautiful objects augmented by original presentation.

allt-6.jpg

This year, the studio exhibited work in prestigious galleries around Slovakia and the Czech Republic, as well as the GASK museum in Kutná Hora. The pair garnered attention with Allter Space, a solo show at the Art Design Project gallery in Bratislava. Inspired by hidden craft, nature, technology and everyday urban life, design objects on display included the Highstack and Lowstack benches constructed out of stacked planks of wood, reminiscent of the unfinished storage vessels found in industrial sawmills and carpentry plants. The result exuded a fresh take on form that meets functionality and exhibited strong local ties to the wood production industry in Slovakia.

Other pieces included a modular carpet system called Cityscape, inspired by the surface of street pavements, as well as the “Who is Watching You” lamp, designed after the simplification of the CCTV camera.

Simoník and Bolcekov&#225’s artistic versatility expands to include not only graphic design but also photography, which they used to highlight the presentation of their furniture in Allter Space. Their inclusion of these purely decorative designs dovetailed nicely with the essence of their products and created an environment that entirely surrounded the viewer. Shady Seating

This clever seating series by Duffy London is sure to get plenty of head turns as it plays with the viewer’s perception! Each chair has a permanent, unwavering shadow that acts not only as a visual peculiarity, but an integral part of the cantilevered support structure. Chairs appear to balance on two legs and, complimented by various shadow characters, it’s almost believable!

German designer Valentin Loellmann used hazel branches to create the knobbly legs of these benches, tables and stools.

Here’s some more information from the designer:

The project Seasons presents two interconnected collections by Valentin Loellmann which reflect a search for a system that depends on organic dynamism rather than geometric dictation, aiming to open up a space where design might not only mould nature, but also be moulded by it.

The collection Fall/Winter consists of stools, benches and tables with different dimensions, functions and structures. Although diverse in size and set-up, all pieces are characterised by a similar working process in which mortise-and-tenon joints are used to connect hazel branches to an oak top.

A mixture of sawdust and glue is used to fill and round off these connections, resulting in an aesthetic, organic form in which no sharp edges remain.

The pieces are burned and treated with wax, after which the top is sanded, polished and treated with oil. The hazel branches, chosen for their strength and straightness, introduce a natural dynamic into the final structure and give each piece a distinct recognisable character. Each piece is hand-made, marked and numbered.
