Quote of Note | Mark Morris

“Everyone has seen many, many pictures by Annie Leibovitz, whether they know it or not. It’s part of the culture. Like the Love stamp. People know the image even if they don’t remember that it was made by Robert Indiana. And because Annie does make those famous images, and shoots glamorous people, somehow she’s not supposed to be able to photograph poor people or war or art.

The most terrifying pictures I’ve ever seen in my life are the fairy-tale spreads she made for Disney. The first one that appeared, with Cinderella on the stairs, kept me awake for nights. It was shocking. But I salute the weirdness of those pictures. I don’t know how she did it. They’re like zombie pictures. They impressed me enormously. I know it’s because of the new digital cameras. But they’re like Odilon Redon or something in their symbolist perversity.”

-Choreographer Mark Morris, who has worked extensively with Leibovitz

He’s Apparently Had Eyes This Whole Time: Karl Lagerfeld Photographed Without Sunglasses

You can tell that either the celebrity in question has made it so large that he now exists on another plane away from we ordinary man, or that, outside of American politics, it’s been a pretty slow, summer news week. Decide for yourself as you react to the news that this week fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld was photographed without wearing his sunglasses. Are you shocked? Are you hyperventilating as you click over to Google News to check out the more than 40 news outlets (well, make that 41 now) that, at the time of this writing, had breathlessly reported as much? Or can you somehow, perhaps because you’re gifted mentally, imagine Karl Lagerfeld without his sunglasses by simply picturing him with normal looking eyes instead of a pair of sunglasses? Whatever camp you fall into, let us all remember where we were when this happened and what we were doing, because this is the sort of thing you tell your grandchildren. And then when they ask, “Who is Karl Lagerfeld?” you can answer, “He was a guy who wore gloves and made plot-less ice cream commercials.” They should understand immediately thereafter and be filled with a glowing reverence for all you have experienced.

Chicago’s Field Museum Makes it to the Finals in ‘America’s Best Restroom’ Competition

We’ve already run a post this week about toilet paper, so why should we stop ourselves when considering writing about more bathroom-related material? We can’t think of a single reason, other than perhaps dignity, so here we go. The company Cintas has once again brought back their contest/marketing effort with the annual “America’s Best Restroom,” wherein they let we Americans vote on what public restroom looks the most inviting. It’s design-related, sure, as would be expect, some of these bathrooms look about as nice as the come. However, this year our interest was piqued by the promotional stunt because of the inclusion of two culture-based organizations, The Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts and the Field Museum in Chicago. Because we’re sure you’ll find all of this extremely important, you can vote on your favorite until September 19th after reading up on the great short descriptions of each facility in the press release. And as this writer is based out of Chicago and therefore obviously biased toward the Field Museum, here’s that:

With two large family-friendly restrooms on the ground floor, the Field Museum features sufficient stalls and sinks, as well as eco-friendly hand-dryers. The women’s restroom has a special nursing room with a shut door, sink, and small sofa for new mothers. The women’s restroom also has a large “Tot Area” with smaller toilets for our littlest guests.

Sicilian Jail Puts Ban on Prisoners Wearing Designer Labels

If you’re a member of the mafia who is currently imprisoned in Sicily, let us first say a) thank you very, very much for reading our site and b) we’re tight-lipped and not here to cause any trouble. Let us just consider this a friendly note, shall we? In an interesting/fun story, the Telegraph reports that the new head of a jail in Palermo wants to put in place a rule that will not allow the prisoners to wear clothing or accessories from designer labels. Apparently, because prisoners are allowed to wear their own clothes, members of the mafia imprisoned there have been “showing off their status with Louis Vuitton jackets, Valentino silk shirts and Adidas and Nike trainers,” which the new head of the jail is tired of. Here’s a bit:

“Why should the authorities be allowed to dictate what my husband wears?” one woman told La Stampa newspaper.

Another complained: “My husband will have to walk around naked because he only has designer clothes, not to show off but because they’re of better quality and they last longer. Why humiliate him in this way and make me go and buy all his clothes in street markets?”

Our questions is: how do you stop it? Couldn’t the prisoners simply transition into less flashy, but still designer-made clothing, with the logos a bit more subdued? And if that happens, will their be regular fashion checks and a registry of brands that are deemed less showy? And if that list gets out, will it ruin the fashion industry?

Bella Maniera Table

Get to Know Pierre² Lafauxxx, Lady Gaga’s ‘Head Desyner’

Lady Gaga has established herself as not only a pop giant, but as a fashion icon as well. But like many internationally renowned artists, it isn’t an individual endeavor. She employs a cadre of workers who help cook up ideas for her lavish and often challenging wardrobe, none more important than Pierre² Lafauxxx, Head Desyner for the ‘Haus of Gaga.’ Fortunately, a crew was recently allowed access into his inner sanctum to receive just a peek at his process:

According to our sources, another visit with Pierre² will be coming soon.

Quote of Note | Jimmy Lai

“In New York, I was very hungry one day and somebody gave me a couple of cookies. I didn’t know that they had marijuana in them. I became very munchy. I walked into a pizza joint called Giordano and thought: Hey, people would think that this is an Italian brand name. Why not? So I put the napkin in my pocket, came back to Hong Kong and asked our graphics people to copy it.”

Jimmy Lai, founder of Hong Kong-based retail giant Giordano, in an interview with Andrew Goldman published in today’s issue of The New York Times Magazine

Around the Design World in 180 Words: Museums, Thieves and Gaga, Oh My!

As we reported yesterday, after struggling for years under a mountain of debt, the American Folk Art Museum has been forced to sell their building to the neighboring MoMA, moving to a much smaller space across town and likely losing a majority of their staff along the away. So what ultimately did the museum in? According to New York‘s Jerry Saltz, architecture is to blame. The critic writes that, as soon as their building opened in 2001, “it was immediately clear to many that the building was not only ugly and confining, it was also all but useless for showing art — especially art as visionary as this museum’s.” Saltz’ comments created a bit of an internal battle inside of the magazine, with its architecture critic penning a response entitled “Jerry Saltz Has It All Wrong About the American Folk Art Museum.”

Elsewhere in lousy museum news (though this is also kind of secretly impressive in the way all true crime art heists are), despite “1,600 antitheft alarms and 3,700 closed-circuit television cameras,” a group of thieves stole more than $1.5 million worth of antique jewelry boxes from inside Beijing’s Forbidden City. The pieces were there as part of a visiting exhibit and the theft was discovered after a man was spotted fleeing the scene. “Staff at the palace museum were reported to have found a large hole in the back wall of the exhibition space. Entering through the hole, they found the exhibition cabinets pried open.”

Finally, if you read one thing today (beside, of course, this post you’re reading right now), make it Eric Wilson‘s wonderful review in the NY Times of Lady Gaga‘s first “fashion and art” column for the magazine V. However, those who critiqued our post last year about the musician’s desire to have “an All Gaga exhibit in the Louvre,” of which there were many (and of which confused us mightily), might want to avoid reading it, as Wilson gets a touch sarcastic and snarky in spots.
