Grand cabinets by Mathieu Gustafsson and Niklas Karlsson

These cabinets by Swedish designer Mathieu Gustafsson and furniture maker Niklas Karlsson are inspired by the use of woven rattan and brass clasps in vintage handbags.

The cabinets are the first pieces in Grand, a collection launched by Mathieu Gustafsson and Niklas Karlsson at Stockholm Furniture Fair in February.

Based on a classic handbag made by Swedish travel and accessories brand Palmgrens, the Light cabinet is made from woven rattan set into a grid of rectangles inside a white or grey birch frame.

The white pine Lock cabinet sits on raised legs and has a brass clasp to keep the doors closed.

The collection will be shown at Ventura Lambrate in Milan from 9 to 14 April. The cabinets aren’t in production at present but can be ordered directly from the designers.

Other cabinets we’ve featured include one with a rough surface that resembles choppy ocean waves and another that opens up like a giant sewing box – see all cabinets.

Here’s some more information from the designers:

Grand is a high-end furniture initiative created by designer Mathieu Gustafsson and cabinet maker Niklas Karlsson. The name Grand alludes to both the design and the craftsmanship ambition in the project. All production is made in Sweden by cabinet maker Niklas Karlsson under the artistic direction of designer Mathieu Gustafsson.

The ambition of Grand is to create furniture without compromising on craftsmanship, design or material. In a sentence: contemporary design with classic high-end craftsmanship.

In the design process, every material is chosen for its aesthetic and functional qualities. The right material in the right place, regardless of parameters such as pricing or current trends. Everything is subordinated to the artistic vision and the correct craftsmanship methods. “When creating our own brand we didn’t want to compete in low pricing, we rather wanted to contribute in artistic expression and quality.”

The first series of furniture, launched at the Stockholm Furniture Fair, are cabinets designed with details inspired by handbags. Many accessory details have parallels to the world of furniture and allow themselves to be translated into other forms with similar functions. It’s when these details are incorporated into a new context that they become interesting objects.

Naica ceramic lamp by Something for Ligne Roset

Product news: diffused light gently glows from a cavity in the side of this ceramic lamp by designers Something of London and Verona for French brand Ligne Roset.

Naica by Something for Ligne Roset

Inspired by hand-held carbide lamps used by miners in the early twentieth century, Naica bounces light around the void to emit a soft flush of light from one long face.

The lamp’s gently curving corners create a softened profile, which the designers say alludes to the form of a cavern, and the name Naica refers to a working mine located in Mexico.

A fabric-covered cable loops up through the top of the lamp to form a handle.

The product is available in white with either a red or white cavity.

Morph folding wheel by Vitamins Design

The world’s first folding wheels can be collapsed to take up about half the space so they’re easier for wheelchair users to store and transport.

Morph folding wheel by Vitamins Design

Initially designed for bicycles, the Morph folding wheel by Vitamins Design measures 60 centimetres across and has a volume of 22 litres. When folded down, the 3.4 kilogram wheel measures 80 centimetres by 32 centimetres and has a volume of only 12 litres.

“The glass-filled nylon material that the Morph Wheels are made from is a composite that allows them to be incredibly tough and strong, without becoming prohibitively heavy or expensive,” said designer Duncan Fitzsimons, who first started working on the concept while studying at the Royal College of Art in London.

“The material gives elements of the stiffness and strength that you would get from a composite such as carbon fibre, combined with the robustness and lower cost that you would get from a plastic part.”

The wheel was developed to fit with an industry standard quick-release wheel axle and also uses the same solid rubber tyres as most other wheelchairs. “This is great, because it means that if someone wants to change their tyres or replace them after the tread starts to wear, they can go to their local supplier to get it done,” he added.

The design has been licensed to Maddak, a company specialising in home healthcare, and is also available to buy from the Morph Wheels website.

The folding wheel was recently shortlisted as one of the Design Museum‘s Designs of the Year alongside a library in south London, a stool shaped by magnets and a new website for the UK government, among many others – see the full Designs of the Year 2013 shortlist.

The category winners and overall winner will be announced next month. All nominated entries will be on display at the museum until 7 July as part of the Designs of the Year exhibition, which includes one controversial nominee presenting 3D-printed copies of two of the other finalists’ work.
