News:Adidas has become the latest brand to launch a smartwatch with the release of a device for runners that monitors performance and gives coaching tips (as well as telling the time).
The miCoach Smart Run is Adidas‘ colour touch-screen running watch, which integrates both performance tracking and personal training into one device.
“By combining the latest innovations, design and ease-of-use navigation, we consciously broke the template that defines other running watches,” said director of miCoach at Adidas Simon Drabble.
While training, users can track runs with GPS mapping, monitor heart rate, play music and get real-time coaching.
A built-in accelerometer counts steps for tracking stride rate. GPS tracks speed and distance, mapping the route travelled on the journey.
An integrated Bluetooth MP3 player can transmit music to wireless earpieces to eliminate headphone cables, which can become tangled while running.
The watch also features a personal training application that uses colours and vibrations to tell the user to speed up, slow down or pause. Coaching can be delivered by a voice via a Bluetooth headset, plus animations demonstrating exercises and workout routines can be played on screen.
“The visual and audible guidance for interval training is a leap forward from any other watch available,” said Terrence Mahon, lead endurance coach for the UK Athletics Federation.
The Smart Run watch will be available on the Adidas website from 1 November.
That’s all folks! The 2013 Electrolux Design Lab has officially wrapped! Over 1700 designers put their concepts to the test, and only 8 of the most talented prevailed to go on to the grand final in Stockholm, Sweden. But only ONE would emerge to snag the title, some cash, and a year’s worth of bragging rights! And… the moment you’ve all been waiting for….
Mab steals the top spot AND the People’s Choice award!!!!! EDL 2013 Winner Adrian Perez Zapata takes home €5000 and a 6 month paid internship at an Electrolux Global Design Center of his choice!!
The concept is an automated cleaning system consisting of hundreds of flying mini-robots. The robots clean surfaces by touching them with a drop of water. Mab scans the house, determines the areas to clean and sends the robots flying.
2nd Place goes to Luiza Silva for her concept, Atomium- a 3D printer that uses molecular ingredients to construct food layer by layer. Users draw the shape of the food they’d like to eat and show it to the appliance. Atomium scans the image and prints food in the desired shape.
Last but not least, 3rd Place goes to Jeabyun Yeon for his Breathing Wall concept – a wall integrated air cleaning concept which pulsates and changes shape as it cleans the air. It can be customized to suit individual needs as it also scents the air you breathe and changes color according to your mood.
A HUGE congrats from YD to ALL of this year’s finalists!! Check out all 8 finalist designs here! For a full gallery of the event, visit our Facebook.
What’s new in EDL this year? For the 2013 Design Lab, Electrolux asked current design students, and for the first time ever, recent graduates to put their ideas for Inspired Urban Living to the test. Over 1700 hopefuls from 60 countries submitted concepts in one of three categories: Social Cooking, Natural Air, and Effortless Cleaning. By broadening both the eligible contestants as well as the brief, Electrolux really upped the ante. But in return, this year they provided step-by-step guidance in the design process from seasoned Electrolux professionals.
The hands-on assistance from these experts is not only highly visible in the 8 final concepts, but is also reflected in the designer’s presentations and confidence when faced with tough questions from the Electrolux jury. It was a genius addition to the competition that emersed competitors in a design process akin to one they might experience while working at Electrolux, and according to this year’s finalists, it also proved to be their favorite part of the competition. (Besides all the free booze, fancy food, paparazzi, partying, and swanky Stockhom hotel of course!) Now… more photos!!

Product news: industrial designer Jean-Sébastien Lagrange has created this lamp from interlocking sections of Tyvek.
Lagrange‘s lampshade is made of repeated strips of Tyvek, a synthetic paper-like material.
The lamp’s structure is entirely made by folding sections of the material. These are fastened together with two colourful rings – a small one at the top and a larger one around the base.
Made from repeated lightweight pieces, the lamp can be shipped flat and assembled by anyone.

Hadid‘s design features a fluid decoration embedded in the acrylic and plexiglass form, which appears as ripples that seem to drain into the legs.
First shown in May 2012, the original Liquid Glacial Tables comprised a coffee table and a dining table made from two sections that fit together. The latest version is 260cm long, 160cm wide and 74.5cm tall and has four legs.
“I have always been interested in the concept of fluidity,” said Hadid. “Using all the advances in design, material and construction technologies, we are now able to achieve even greater results in the work.”
Here’s some more information from David Gill Galleries:
Zaha Hadid presents Prototype Liquid Glacial Table at David Gill St James’s, October 2013
David Gill is delighted to present the next evolution of Zaha Hadid’s series of Liquid Glacial tables. The latest version, entitled, Prototype Liquid Glacial table, will be unveiled at David Gill Galleries, St James’s, on October 15 2013 and the show will run until 16 November.
The Prototype Liquid Glacial table is dramatically visual – the flat table top appears transformed by the subtle waves and ripples evident below the surface which seem to pour into an intense vortex that forms the table legs. Like the previous Liquid Glacial tables this new table is milled and hand polished to create an exquisite finish. The design embeds surface complexity and refraction within a fluid dynamic.
When it was launched in May 2012, the Liquid Glacial collection was acclaimed by collectors and press alike and the table was shortlisted by the Design Museum as one of the ‘Best Designs of 2012’.
“I have always been interested in the concept of fluidity,” says Hadid. “Using all the advances in design, material and construction technologies, we are now able to achieve even greater results in the work.”
For the first two weeks of the exhibition, a scale model of a ‘super yacht’ designed by Zaha Hadid for yacht builders Blohm and Voss will be on show. Zaha Hadid’s fluid design language has not been applied in the world of yacht design before and the manufacturers are presenting an entirely new concept to potential yacht owners.
