Fall 2011 Missoni for Converse Chuck Taylor All Star

We take the latest in zig-zagged sneakers for a spin on NYC streets

converse-7.jpg

From their collection for Target to Marina, the puppet blogger,
Missoni’s
playful spirit is hard to miss these days. But their collaboration with Converse, one of the earlier reinventions of the family-run Italian label, is the project that we still gravitate to most. This latest and fourth edition combines a raschel knit (a fabric with a texture almost like crochet) from Missoni’s Spring 2012 collection with a version of a Chuck Taylor All Star that was originally created for the U.S. Military in the ’60s.

With leather accents and a muted colorway of tans and greys, the limited-edition shoe is serious enough for the coming fall season. Missoni’s trademark zig-zags, along with bright blue accents (you can opt for blue laces too) and the luxurious softness of the material keep you cozy, and might just bring out a smile.

Debuting tonight, 8 September 2011, as part of Fashion’s Night Out, the shoes will be available at Missoni boutiques as well as Converse’s First String stores for $200.

Rubber Tracks

Record your next hit at Converse’s top-of-the-line studio in Brooklyn
rubber-tracks1.jpg

With Chucks on the feet of countless lead singers, Converse’s roots in rock ‘n’ roll go almost as far back as the genre itself, a tradition the brand is keeping alive with this week’s opening of Rubber Tracks, a world-class recording studio open to musicians of all genres at no cost.

rubber-tracks2.jpg

The community-driven space, located in one of Williamsburg, Brooklyn’s last remaining industrial pockets, is purely democratic, organized to enable serious musicians who might otherwise struggle with the high price of studio time. As Chief Marketing Officer Geoff Cottrill explained on our visit, this is an altruistic endeavor and all musicians recording at Rubber Tracks will retain all rights to their tunes. Converse is simply the facilitator in helping them achieve their best possible sound.

Much like Levi’s recent creative workshops, anyone can use the space if there is an available time slot. How it differs is its long-term approach, accepting applicants in cycles to spend a thorough amount of time in the studio and encouraging bands to reapply if not accepted the first time around. The North Andover, MA-based shoemaker considers this an investment in the future of music and a way to give back.

rubber-tracks3.jpg

Exteriors feature murals by Mr. Ewokone and Shepard Fairey (whose works were both already there), with artist Jeremyville‘s “Crystal Mountain, Williamsburg” gracing the inside stage area—which Converse says will not become a venue but will serve mostly as another area for bands to practice or experiment. Equipment supplied by Guitar Center fills the building, a lineup including guitars and amps by Fender, Marshall and Schecter, as well as NYC’s only Ocean Way HR2 large-format monitor system.

The rest of the space is wholly focused on recording, even soundproofed to prevent “flat” uncolored sound. Persian rugs and worn floorboards keep a relaxed vibe in the studio, which is kitted out with all the essential gear for shredding and a retro-styled isolation booth.

rubber-tracks4.jpg

Helmed by seasoned musician and facility manager Brad Worrell, alongside a team of top-notch engineers, the control room has digital and analog mixing consoles with enough buttons to rival a spaceship. There’s a space for the synth set too. Rubber Tracks also has a workroom dedicated to digital editing, offering a complete range of tools for mixing both music and video.

rubber-tracks5.jpg

While ready for a jam session in terms of audio equipment and decor, this summer they’re kicking things off by hosting a week-long Grammy Camp for students, who will learn the creative process of making a track from start to finish. Rubber Tracks will open as a recording studio tomorrow, 13 July 2011, with five emerging NYC bands christening the space and a slew of musicians to follow.

Converse and Marimekko

A playful marriage of Finnish patterns and classic American sneakers
maricon11.jpg

Unveiling a new model, reissue and pitch-perfect collaboration, Converse’s triple-threat announcement today builds on the brand’s commitment to making everyday sportswear with playfully wearable style. For their spring collection, Converse partnered with
Marimekko
, sourcing patterns—the colorful Tarha (1963) and the looping scaly Pikkusuomu (1965) by Annika Rimala and the tiny triangles of the Kirppu (1980) by Maija and Kristina Isola—from the Finnish textile house’s archives.

maricon12.jpg

The work of some of Marimekko’s most iconic designers, the graphics also speak to Marimekko’s modern art influence—as explained in the
mini-documentary
Converse made about the project.

maricon2.jpg maricon3.jpg

The partnership brings the bold prints to both classic hi and low Chucks (around $80) as well as to two more surprising profiles—Helen ($75), a slightly more feminine Purcell named for Jack Purcell’s wife and reproduced stich-for-stitich, along with the PJ ($75-85), a brand-new look that’s slim and thin-soled, like a classic ’50s sneaker.

Packaged with equally cute shoe bags in matching prints, look out for the collection this spring on
Converse.com
and at premium retailers.

Converse’s NYC SoHo Store

Converse leverages their heritage to reinvent retail with their second shop
conversesoho1.jpg

With over 100 years of history and a shoe known around the world, it may seem surprising that the Converse store opening today in NYC is only the second brick-and-mortar shop for the iconic brand. Following the success of its first location on Boston’s Newbury Street, Converse is taking their wholesale and online empire to SoHo, with a sizable shop dedicated both to the city itself and Converse’s athletic heritage all with a punk rock twist.

conversesoho4.jpg conversesoho5.jpg

As explained by Dave Powers, Vice President of Global Retail for Converse, the store is directed at kids aged 18-22 that enjoy wearing a simple outfit comprised of Chuck Taylors, jeans and a plaid shirt. While this sounds similar to the typical ensemble adorning the Abercrombie crowd, Powers ensures us that the Converse shop is actually the opposite to uniform style. Powers states simply, “we don’t need anyone telling us how to dress.” The Converse store reflects this, with its relaxed atmosphere, no-frills merchandising (there’s even an express pick-up window for shoe shoppers who already know their size) and a customization center complete with “maestros” who are eager to help patrons put their name and personal style on shoes, totes and tees.

conversesoho2.jpg conversesoho3.jpg

The store is home to the largest selection of Converse kicks in the world, from the 648 pairs of red, white and blue Chuck Taylors making up the American flag wall installation (taken from the Berlin Bread and Butter show) to its extensive showcase of premium brand collaborations, NYC One Stars, (Product) Red, Jack Purcells and more. The shop isn’t just for sneaker freaks though—also stocking the shelves is a brand new collection of apparel and accessories seemingly centered around various styles of denim and snug-fitting sportswear.

conversesoho6.jpg

With so many brands drawing on their heritage as modern inspiration, the Converse store is a refreshing take on the concept; successfully acknowledging its roots and playing to them without force-feeding its customers a glorified version of its past. Reclaimed gym bleachers are a prominent design element in the store, for example. Powers also explained to CH that before they worried about decor or product the goal was to achieve the perfect store ambiance. Initially working with design firm Ideo, two years later they have done just that.
