CollegeCandy Shows Us How To Pull Off The Formal Fauxhawk

imageI’m not really a fan of traditional up-dos. You know, the ones with the spiral curls that are pinned neatly together and sprayed with enough hairspray to destroy the ozone. Maybe it’s just me, but I’ve never really been into pageant hair. I prefer something a little sleeker and sexier, not to mention something that doesn’t quadruple my carbon footprint. When it comes to formal or special events, I’m all about taking risks with hair and makeup. The bigger the risk the better the payoff, right? That couldn’t be more true with the look Kim Kardashian is rockin’ on the red carpet. If you’ve got a formal coming up (or you just want to try something different on a Saturday night), this fauxhawk is sophisticated, fun and super easy to do. Influential International Style: M.I.A.

imageMathangi “Maya” Arulpragasam broke into the music scene in 2004 and is simply impossible to forget, because of her lyrics, both catchy and intense (“All I wanna do is… BANG BANG BANG BANG”), and her unique style. M.I.A. seems to take style inspiration from all areas of her life – whether it’s her love of prints coming from her past as a graphic designer, or drawing a love of dyeing techniques from her Sri Lankan decent. Her style is incredibly unique – and she puts things together the way no one else would, with a surprising mix of color, crazy textures and a great love of neon and shiny material. To get even close to M.I.A.’s signature style, you’ll have to mix it up – bold bangles with loose-fitting neon shirts over shiny leggings with some bright kicks. Top it off with a hat and you’re on your way. Check out my slideshow for some great ideas on how to get started incorporating M.I.A.’s look in to your personal style!

The Notorious B.E.V.Y.: Bevy Smith Dishes On Budget Entertaining

imageWhen you’re a high-powered publishing executive with a discerning eye for style and a Rolodex that reads like front row at a Marc Jacobs show, what do you do for your second act? For the dynamic Bevy Smith, the answer was to pair her talent as a social conduit with her flair for entertaining and create Dinner With Bevy, a luxury social marketing enterprise that brings together the worlds of fashion, art, music, and media in a delectable, custom salon. Smith, a former Rolling Stone Fashion Ad Director and Vibe Fashion Editor-at-Large, hosts her impeccably curated fetes for celebrities, brands, and tastemakers seeking organic creative connections in a pressure-free environment. On any given evening, you might see Solange Knowles giggling with Paper Magazine Editor-in-Chief Mickey Boardman, or singer-songwriter Vanessa Carlton grooving to the sounds of “Late Night” band master and FOB (Friend of Bevy) Questlove with a Vice President from Miu Miu, Giorgio Armani, or Bottega Veneta, all of whom are among the many who have attended Bevy’s dinners. “The best part about hosting dinner parties is when my seating chart is a success. To get a call from a guest the next day saying, ‘I absolutely LOVED [xxx]!’ is the ultimate kudos for me!” Bevy, who is also working on a style show pilot for the Oxygen Network, relies on classic Emily Post, Diana Vreeland’s “Why Don’t You…” tips, and the swinging gaiety of the 1950s and 60s for style cues. “Whenever I see a movie from that era, or look at a Slim Aarons photograph, I’m instantly inspired by the light-hearted, fun way folks used to entertain! Let’s get drunk, smoke, and swap partners–but do so in a chic environment, ” she says with a wink and a laugh. “Very ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s!'” And who’s on Bevy’s personal ultimate guest list? “Nelson Mandela, Diana Vreeland, Michael Jackson, Albert Einstein, Truman Capote, and Bono–but even he would have to remove his shades!” Make room, Martha Stewart: Bevy is on a path to be our generation’s hostess with the mostest! Check out the slideshow for a glimpse at some of Bevy’s exclusive dinners. For more about Bevy, visit www.dinnerwithbevy.com!

Celebs Are Loving Super Short Long Sleeved Mini Dresses!

imageEvery since Christophe Decarnin sent his fembots down his spring and fall runway shows in minis with sky high hemlines and long sleeves it seems like celebs can’t get enough. Blake Lively has been spotted in a seriously shoulder padded black sequined number and Sienna Miller rocked a majorly distressed version in gold at the party for her Broadway show “After Miss Julie.” But its not just Balmain that’s playing the long sleeve mini game. Chloe Sevigny’s been out and about in new designer Kimberly Ovitz’s nude bandaged mini and Alexa Chung looked perfectly minimalist in red Calvin Klein. One thing is for sure, all of these dresses have dangerously high hemlines, but the more conservative, covered-up look on top keeps it balanced. I mean mom always said to cover up, right? Check out the slideshow to see our top 5 favorites.

Audrey Tautou Wears The Chanel Cometes Star Pendant

imageI’ve had a few people ask me about the star necklace Audrey Tautou is wearing in the Chanel No. 5 print ad and TV commercial. She’s wearing a piece from Chanel Fine Jewelry — the Star Pendant in 18K white gold and diamonds from the constellation-inspired Comets collection. There’s both a large and small version — Audrey is wearing the large. Call or visit a Chanel boutique for prices, and don’t forget to check out Coquette for more designer fashion finds!

Heidi Klum Will Host The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show!

imageWe’re almost a bit surprised that Heidi Klum is hosting the Victoria’s Secret fashion show instead of modeling in it. Of course, she did just have a baby a couple weeks ago, but you know how Heidi is. The last time Heidi Klum had a baby, she decided she still wanted to walk the runway in the Victoria’s Secret fashion show. But this time, she just doesn’t think she can do it. According to Heidi, “The last time [I gave birth], I had two months, and I don’t know if I have that much time this time… It was pushing it the last time. But if I don’t make it, I’m sure I’ll be very sad.” So, even though Heidi will only have weeks between giving birth and the fashion show this year, she still wants to be a part of it. And obviously hosting the show is a really big part of it!

Get Charlize Theron’s Sexy-Sleek Look

imageAt the 13th Annual Hollywood Awards Gala the always striking Charlize Theron was a true vision in black. The bombshell paired a sleek leather skirt with a strapless top from The Row, creating a sexy yet sophisticated silhouette. She injected touches of color into the look with a Bottega Veneta clutch, a pair of diamond-accented pumps and a turquoise ring. By taking a minimal approach to the accessories, Charlize kept the look polished and chic and allowed her natural beauty to really shine. A leather pencil skirt is definitely a must-have this season and is super versatile. Wear it with a sexy top like Charlize or tone it down by teaming it with a billowy blouse or a sharp blazer. Video Style Steal: Carrie Underwood’s Boots Walk All Over This “Cowboy Casanova”

imageCarrie Underwood has come a long way since her “small-town girl with the big voice” image on American Idol. Lucky for that image of hers, she’s ditched the demure deer-in-headlights look and swapped it for an assertive attitude to match her sultry voice. I guess a load of confidence is easy to come by when you have a series of hit singles and Chace Crawford as your former arm-candy! Speaking of exes, in her latest video for “Cowboy Casanova,” Carrie hits the saloon looking retro-fabulous to warn girls about a bad boy’s particularly womanizing ways… and shows him a thing or two! Don’t forget — Halloween is officially in the dust, so don’t go full-on saloon girl when you try this look. Instead, stick to inspired pieces like a bustier dress, cute leather booties, and feather accents that only hint at Carrie’s costume-y video. Watch the video, and then check out the slideshow to see how you can go western without looking like you stepped out of a time machine.
