Chic Or Shabby: Shorts On The Red Carpet?

imageOver the winter (ironically enough), dress shorts became popularized as the latest evening-appropriate replacement for the mini, and now that summer is looming ahead, we’re bound to see the trend even more frequently among club-goers. One place we haven’t seen them too often, however, is the red carpet. Until now, that is. Gwyneth Paltrow rocked clean white shorts and a matching blazer at the Iron Man 2 world premiere, while Amanda Seyfriend donned a black Viktor & Rolf set at the Tribeca Film Festival (the fact that they’re in contrasting color schemes is just begging for a “who wore it best” duel!). And fashion blogs everywhere are throwing a fit! Are dress shorts chic enough for a Hollywood event, or is the red carpet meant to be a sacred place of style saved only for suits, skirts and dresses? Weigh in below on which actress you think pulled off the look in a premiere-appropriate manner, or if you think shorts are not suited for the carpet at all! Which Country Star Looked White Hot At The ACM Awards?

imageLast weekend’s Academy of Country Music Awards, which took place at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand, was a night of star-studded surprises. Lady Antebellum and Carrie Underwood swept the event’s biggest honors while Taylor Swift left empty-handed. But what really surprised us Bees was the frequency of white dresses on the event’s orange carpet! Julianne Hough looked like a princess in her floor-length Basil Soda Couture gown, which contrasted with her golden tan that she’s still kept fresh since her “Dancing with the Stars” hiatus! Carrie Underwood had a total of four different dresses for the night, one of which was this flouncy silvery-white number, complete with a plunging neckline. And Faith Hill kept it simple yet elegant in her immaculate white fitted dress and low-maintenance hair. But who looked best in their clean white dress? Vote below! Photo Credit: PR Photos

Cure Your Disco Fever With Metal Mesh Jewelry!

imageAs you’ve probably noticed, metal mesh (sometimes referred to as chainmail) can come across as tacky when adorning shoes or bags (you know, anything that’s not really meant to be made of metal, save for the few fashionable exceptions, like this Jill Stuart pouchette for example). However, the result is appropriately disco-chic, with just a dash of edginess, when used for jewelry! Go for a fancified take on Taylor Swift’s classic silver mesh earrings with these pearl-adorned ones from CoutureCandy, or glam up pretty much any basic tank or dress with this bandanna-inspired necklace from Jill Stuart. Or if you like just a quick flash of shine, Free People’s chainmail cuff adds some gold shimmer without blinging out your whole look. Slicked Back Hair Done Right

imageIt’s amazing what a simple hair cut or style can do for your face shape or to change the feel of an ensemble. While some faces look better with a sweeping side part and others shine more with a simple mid-part, the most flattering look is to have no part at all! A coif that’s slicked back from the face is a sleek, modern look and leaves the wearer looking clean, dynamic and stylish. However, there is such thing as doing a slicked back style wrong. Does anyone remember Megan Fox’s crispy, greasy, over-gelled debacle at the MTV Music Awards? As hot as she is, even she couldn’t pull off that look. The trick to doing slicked back hair right is to choose a hair product that holds your tresses, but still leaves it flexible and natural looking. Another tip to help make this sleek ‘do work for you is to give it a bit of lift at the roots (but remember to avoid looking like Snooki) and give it some dimension. Want to try this look for yourself? Click on the slideshow to see some favorite hair styling mousses and waxes that add volume to your roots and holds your hair in place in a flattering way!

Which Celeb Looks Best In Her One-Shoulder Dress?

imageThe first time the one-shoulder trend came back I was in high school, and let’s just say the old photos of me don’t exactly make me want to run to the racks and pick up one of the more recent takes on the trend. But I have to say, celebrities who have been rockin’ asymmetrical frocks on red carpets everywhere are starting to make me rethink my skepticism! Miley Cyrus put an edgy yet glamorous spin on the style with her black leather Thomas Wylde dress, while Kristen Bell glittered in a Monique Lhuillier mini with a gold hemline. Diane Kruger’s one-shoulder striped dress added interest with asymmetrical detailing at the hip as well, and Hilary Duff stepped up the drama in a tulle-draped Vera Wang dress. Vote below on whose one-shoulder sheath you like best! Photo Credit: PR Photos

Video Style Steal: More Wearable Takes On Lady Gaga’s “Telephone” Getups!

imageSave for maybe those impressive walking skills in her McQueen shoes in “Bad Romance,” the video for “Telephone” definitely trumps Lady Gaga’s prior vids in terms of being way out there. While it’s more of a mini movie (and a crazy one at that) than what you’d expect from a music video, you didn’t actually expect Gaga to go the traditional route, did you? In “Telephone,” Gaga spends much of her time in jail, but instead of unflattering orange jumpsuits, she fierces it up jailbird-style with a striped mini dress, hot booties, and a slew of unique sunglasses. For your own safety, I recommend not actually wearing your own pair of lighted cigarette shades, but you can still adapt her wildly avant-garde video getups for the real world and inject a bit (repeat: a bit) of Gaga flavor into your wardrobe. Watch the video, then check the slideshow for my “Telephone”-inspired picks! Photo Credit: MTV.com

Rock Matte Blue Eye Makeup Like Leona Lewis!

imageWhile matte blue shadow and/or liner may conjure up nightmarish visions of Mimi from The Drew Carey Show, or horrendously dated beauty trends in general, you may be surprised to find that when done right, matte blue makeup can look sophisticated and not tacky! For example, Leona Lewis’ peepers totally popped on the red carpet with a bright teal liner on just the inner rims of her eyes — after all, when it comes to bold color, less is more unless you’re going for a GaGa-esque statement. If turquoise isn’t your thing, you can also opt for matte navy blue nails, or try a blue take on the traditional smoky eye with Cover Girl’s double-sided ShadowBlast stick. Take a look at the slideshow for my favorite matte blue makeup picks! PR Photos: PR Photos

Hate It Or Love It: Leighton Meester’s “Date Night” Fringe Dress

imageEver since Gossip Girl Leighton Meester was spotted strutting down the red carpet at Tuesday night’s “Date Night” premiere, the fashion press has been in quite a tizzy over her dress. The belted mini-frock, from Giambattista Valli’s Spring/Summer 2010 collection, featured a teal and black Aztec-inspired print in the front with edgy tiers of fringe in the back. Some called it a totally chic treat every time she turned around (so unexpected!), while others referred to it as an awful Jekyll-and-Hyde type of a sheath! What say you? Is this dress a refreshing break from her usual Blair Waldorf TV style, or is it just a one-way ticket on the Hot Mess Express? Vote below! Photo Credit: PacificCoastNews.com via Zimbio
