A Bright Smile Is Your Best Summer Accessory!

imageNow that the days are getting brighter, so too it seems are our clothes and accessories, as well as the colors that we choose to wear on our face. But while a brightly saturated dress or shorts look right on trend and summer ready, such a richly colorful tone may be all wrong for the face. While coral is a flattering shade to wear for all and hot pinks are totally in, they may not be the best colors to apply thickly onto lips. A subtle pop of color is all you need when it comes to warming up a smile, so skip the opaque lipsticks and opt for a glossier, more sheer version of a brightly colored favorite when it comes to painting your pucker. A gentle sweep of color is all it takes for a flattering look and a sheer hue is more natural and flattering in the harsh sunlight than a cream based lipstick that gives too much coverage. Click on the slideshow to see some favorite shades of sheer lip glosses and lip shines that’ll give you a jump start on getting those lips moist, kissable and ready for a summer romance!

Tokyomilk Just Desserts Mini Soaps Collection

imageTo be honest, when it comes to practicality, I’m not too big on bar soaps — I’m more about a quick squeeze on the loofah so I can lather up and move on to more high-maintenance things like my hair. But as far as cuteness goes, it’s hard not to adore these Just Desserts Mini Soaps from Tokyomilk! I’m loving everything from the retro-chic packaging to the crisp, sweet scent (which is surprisingly not nearly as heavy and sugary as you’d expect from something with desserts on the package!), not to mention the fact that they’re from Tokyomilk so they already have my wash-time stamp of approval by default! Mother’s Day is long gone, but they’re just begging to be gifted, so I’m sure you could easily find someone to bestow them upon in the near future… that is, if you don’t plan on keeping them for yourself!

Price: $10.50 for a set of 3

Nikki, Lily, Or Taylor: Who Worked Her Side-Swept Curls Best?

imageWhile sleek and straight is a great way to look polished, romantic curls have always been a pretty solid red carpet staple. Whether wild and natural, retro and pin-curled, or barrel-curled to perfection, ringlets of at least some kind never seem to go out of style. However, one particular spiral style that has been spotted on recent red carpets has kind of thrown me off guard: side-swept curls. Kind of a strange mix between undone and overdone, the style takes the laid-back idea of wearing one’s hair down, but pins it (or sprays the heck out of it) to stay perfectly placed to one side. While it’s definitely flirty, it can either conjure up images of gorgeously vintage Veronica Lake… or appear dated in a much less flattering way, like say, Jessie Spano from “Saved by the Bell.” Nikki Reed, Lily Collins, and Taylor Swift have all been seen rockin’ the trend in the past month — vote below for who you think worked it in a good way, or if you think this is one retro hairstyle that doesn’t deserve to be resurrected! Hurraw Balm

hurraw-1.jpg

Most drugstore-variety lip balms have the unfortunate effect of leaving mouths even dryer thanks to unnatural ingredients. The aptly named Hurraw! Balm keeps it pure, using an emollient formula of vegan-friendly, organic ingredients for a series of 10 balms in refreshingly simple flavors—from mint and cherry to root beer and grapefruit.

Created by lip balm obsessives in Whitefish, MT, the collective cold presses its fair trade raw ingredients and pours each mix by hand to ensure the utmost quality of each batch.

Their earth-consciousness extends down to packaging too of course, with each recyclable oval tube (its shape fits more snugly in back pockets) arriving in a reusable tea bag stamped with edible ink. Pick one up from Hurraw! Balm’s online store for around $4.

Bright Eyed And Bold With Neon!

imageNeon went from being a fun splash of color on our nails to slowly creeping its way into accessories, before finally taking over the closets of the fashionably daring. Now, the neon trend is pushing it a step further and showing up as shadows and liners, to have our peepers really feeling florescent. Trendsetting celebs like Rihanna and Lady Gaga have already taken this trend out for a few spins, making their eyes bright and super stylish. Or remember Beyonce’s yellow eyeshadow in the ‘Lady Gaga feat. Beyonce video, Telephone’? Although neon eye shadows and liners are definitely a daring move, you can go as light or as saturated as you want. Fair skin? Try a generous sweep of hot pink over your lids like Lady Gaga to make a real head-turning statement. Or if you have natural honey tones and want a more subtle look, try a bright yellow, like Beyonce, or a light dusting of orange. Blues and purples help brown eyes pop more, and electric greens are reserved for the true risk-takers. Click on the slideshow to see how you can try out the neon beauty trend for yourself!

Have Your Cake & Bathe In It Too With These Dessert-Scented Products!

imageTalk about a guilt-free indulgence! You may be on the right track for swimsuit season with that strict summer diet of yours, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have your just desserts! With sweets-centric beauty brands dedicated to bath time decadence like Cake Beauty and Dylan’s Candy Bar products, candy and cake-scented bath and body products are gaining more and more popularity. After all, what’s not to love about the idea of taking your favorite treats with you in the shower (other than the fact that I’m sure they don’t taste nearly as good as their deceptively delicious scent)? For example, this Laura Mercier Creme Brulee Honey Bath has the same creamy richness and delicious scent of your favorite dessert (it even has a honeycomb for authentic application!), but this goodie won’t leave you feeling sticky, guilty, or heftier afterward! Take a look at the slideshow for my favorite sweet-scented products!

Whose Makeup Smoldered Most At The MET Gala?

imageWhile this year’s MET Gala seemed relatively more tame than the last in terms of imaginative (and in some guests’ cases, disastrous) fashion, last Monday’s ball still served as an outlet for celebrities of all kinds to sparkle and shine in their evening wear. However, as a beauty fiend I couldn’t help but focus more on the guests’ makeup and hair as they romped the red carpet, and while none were particularly innovative, wild, or GaGa-esque, I was pretty surprised at the variety of beauty looks across the board. Some celebs opted to tone it down like Sarah Jessica Parker, who boasted a summer glow in shimmery bronze and neutral hues, and Jessica Biel, who kept it earthy with plum cheeks and berry lipstick. On the other side of the spectrum, Jennifer Lopez went for the classic smokey eye look which complemented her untamed updo, while Sienna Miller focused only on her top lashline for a half-smoldering look that made her blue eyes pop. And of course Camilla Belle looked gorgeous as always, this time rocking a vintage-inspired Old Hollywood look with dramatic cat-eye liner that balanced her bold brows. Give Your Beauty Routine Some Summer Color With These Bronze Makeup Picks

imageLet me start off by pointing out that you will find nary a self-tanner nor a bronzer here! While I’m all about an all-over summer glow myself, this post is all about incorporating season-festive bronze shades into other aspects of your makeup — eyes, lips, nails — and proving you can rock the color with or without a tan. I mean, just look at Charlize Theron! Bronze shades, whether your skin is rich and dark, creamy porcelain, or somewhere in between, have a way of instantly summer-izing your look and warming up your features, whether in the form of a smooth coppery shadow like NARS’ Soft Touch Pencil or a sparkly bronze lip gloss like this one from Too Faced. Who needs a spray tan to look sun-kissed when you have all these gorgeous bronze shades to highlight your best features one at a time? Yes, one at a time — too much bronze will have you looking less like a summer goddess and more like the next cast member of “Jersey Shore.” Check out the slideshow for my 10 favorite bronze makeup picks!
