Silicone Bathroom Goodies

Oh snap, Kontextu’r and designer Josh Owen came up with bathroom accessories that are fun while err’ing on the side of sophistication. Fantastic job because I want all of it. The Hanging Line consists of a wall-mountable towel/magazine holder, a toilet paper roll holder and specially designed hooks – all made from flexible and durable silicone.  The toilet paper holder uses a magnetic catch to quickly change rolls. I’m less excited about the mirrors but as a stand-a-lone piece, they could transform a bathroom from drab to hella fab.

Sinking Bath

Sink into the perfect bathtub, sink into The Comfort. Designed with a unique W cross-sectional form, the bathtub is designed ergonomically contoured to the human body. Even if you drift off into sleep, the bathtub design ensures you don’t accidentally slump into the water. A good thing about the form is that it features two distinct, one that allows babies to bathe safely without the need of filling the bathtub to full capacity.

As the designer explains, “Comfort has an integrated tap allowing water to come up into the two regions of the bath. While visually sleek and clean, this is another safety feature as research shows that taps are a common source of bumps and injuries – particularly to the elderly and the young. The bath overflow system prevents water spilling on to the bathroom floor and eliminates a major slip hazard. The design makes it easy to enter or exit the bath. The bath sides are lower and the sloping shape creates a raised edge for a convenient hand hold position.”

The Snake Shower

The Aqueous is quite an innovative design that exudes a fluid form while retaining functionality. It features a unique malleable disk that allows you to control the flow of water; pushing down regulates pressure, pushing right brings hot water, and left brings cold. As the designer explains, “Aqueous’ singular shape creates a memorable silhouette.”

Aqueous provides both a shower-head, that is activated once rotated out 90 degrees from the wall, and a retractable shower unit that can be used when the shower-head is de-activated but also locks in place when not in use. It can be adapted in enamel for multiple color variations, and has the potential to be applied to mixer taps as part of a bathroom suite.

Aqueous is a 2012 Reece Bathroom Innovations Award entry.

The Koeda Effect

Mixer tap designs are typical and stereotyped and we are basically programmed to use them in a particular way. More like up and down is on and off, and turning the mixer from left to right will change from hot to cold. Not that this is a bad thing, but imagine a redefined shape, a new intuitive adoption of operations…we have done that in the tech world, can we do that in Bathroom Innovations?

As the designer explains, “designed to be unconsciously intuitive, Koeda features a modified progressive cartridge that provides a simplified innate dial control. By rotating the dial in a clockwise motion, water temperature gradually changes from cold to hot. Water pressure flow will progressively increase as the dial is rotated further – ensuring users are less likely to accidentally turn up water flow and waste excess water.”

  • Koeda is handcrafted in porcelain and finished with a flawless glaze.
  • An aerator manages the directional flow of the water and also softens the water’s texture for a silky, gentle wash.
  • A slight bump angled at a 15° incline minimizes excess splashing.
  • An innovative series of six LED lights, efficiently powered by two lithium cells, change from a light sky blue to a warm orange and finally to a dark searing red, indicating the mix of cold and hot water.

A Cleaner Public Loo?

Oprah asks us to squat, Europeans provide you with a protective cover and the Japanese provide you with self-cleaning of the toilet seats. The question is; are the public toilets as clean as we deem them to be, especially when we do what Oprah says? To be really sure about its hygiene, Bluelarix Designworks has developed the CSM Automatic Toilet. It is an automatic toilet system, which can be mounted on any toilet.

The CSM lays a new paper automatically on the toilet seat before use, so that the user always knows that the seat is clean. After using the toilet, the piece of paper on the seat is flushed.

The Utility Shower Curtain

Wintercheck Factory’s space-saving take on a bathroom staple
wintercheck-shower2.jpg

Brooklyn’s Wintercheck Factory has made a name for itself by updating everything from sunglasses to swimsuits with their brand of locally-made and highly-functional chic. The latest to get the Wintercheck treatment is the humble shower curtain. Like all the design studio’s products, the simple yet intelligent concept improves on a standard necessity with a few key design features. This clever solution to cluttered shower floors has interior pockets large enough to stow eight shampoo and conditioner bottles in self-draining pockets, as well as a razor and toothbrush. On the exterior, two loops on either end of the curtain are perfect for hanging your towel to save even more space.

wintercheck-shower1.jpg

Taking into consideration the small and often windowless bathrooms that plague NYC apartments, Wintercheck constructed the shower curtain from machine washable nylon, making it great for any unventilated bathrooms where mold and mildew thrive and one less thing you have to routinely replace.

Waterworks Heritage Book

Champions of the modern bathroom chronicle their artisinal approach in a beautiful new book

waterworks-cover.jpg

Barbara and Robert Sallick founded NYC’s Waterworks in 1978 and in the decades since helped redefine the modern bath as “an intimate yet luxurious retreat.” With their extensive knowledge on materials and craftsmanship and Barbara at the creative helm, Waterworks remains focused on authentic design—a commitment that shows in both their product and her absorbing online design journal, “The Perfect Bath.”

Another publication, commemorating their success and sharing their creative vision, Waterworks’s newly-launched “Heritage Book” is equal parts promotional item and tool for designers, architects and homeowners. In addition to gorgeously-photographed images of their product and process, the book shares insight into the company’s prospective ideas. Sallick explains. “It’s our heritage that actually sets the pace and philosophy for our future.” She adds, “the best is yet to come in terms of keeping our authenticity and respecting the craft, while pushing the boundaries of design innovation and quality.”

Handcrafting each of their fixtures in Normandy, France (because of the region’s quality sand), Waterworks approach to production is largely artisinal. Each piece passes through seven points of human contact—from tumbling and polishing to checking for water tightness—a step-by-step process that ensures mechanical integrity.

waterworks1.jpg

The method also speaks to Barbara’s keen interest in design as collaboration. A huge ceramic tile enthusiast, she tells the story of witnessing the “magical” process it takes to create one piece. “Each of the 35 steps to a successful product requires the whole team to work effortlessly together…The end result holds the key to the DNA of the tile maker.”

waterworks5.jpg waterworks3.jpg

The designer’s fascination with such techniques falls in line with her statement that her three core beliefs for design “are in the sacred tenets of balance, proportion and scale.” Whether creating a “multifaceted sensory composition” for the bathroom or just knowing when to add a splash of red, this book thoughtfully details these and more of Waterworks’ strengths in creating the kind of utterly relaxing environments that have become a standard amenities in today’s high-end homes.
