Wheelie Cargo

Ollie around the world with Burton’s redesigned roller bag

wheelie1.jpg wheelie2.jpg

Having fallen in love with the way Burton’s Wheelie Cargo spins 360 degrees on its skateboard wheels, I was eager to check out the recently redesigned version after years of abuse left mine with busted zippers. A two-week trek around Europe presented the perfect opportunity for a real road test—rolling it over cobblestone streets, squeezing it into tiny elevators and shoving it onto planes, trains and automobiles—and the small tweaks resulted in big improvements.

Even before hitting the road, the bag’s re-imagined zipper placement added extra packing functionality. While the earlier model also boasted two main compartments that zip together, a new straight zipper down the top section’s middle replaces the old, more traditional zipper design. The reconfiguration makes a wide opening for easy stacking and packing, and another zipper below gives quick access to bottom layers. When you’re ready to close it up, clasps clip the extra material down flat, minimizing the bag’s size.

Other features preserve elements of the original, like the bottom compartment’s stretchy fabric lining. It’s perfect for cramming in bulky items like shoes or oddly shaped souvenirs, which an ultra-durable EVA/TPU plastic backing keeps safe. With easily accessible side pockets and internal mesh pockets for laundry, the Wheelie Cargo is like a home away from home.

Still set on Ixion skate wheels, the bag maneuvers the trickiest of streets and lends to easy wheel replacement. While the bag itself supports overpacking (an attribute I can personally attest to), if it’s filled to the max, the Wheelie does have a tendency to wobble over as you pull it off a curb onto the road.

The bag sells online or from Burton shops worldwide for $260, and is available in Grunge Plaid (pictured here), as well as Black and other colorful patterns.

Pack Up Poolside With A Stylish Straw Tote!

imageNothing says beach day like the perfect new swimsuit, a hot pair of shades, and of course, a summery straw tote! I don’t know what it is about the material, but straw bags just totally give off that carefree vacation vibe that I’m so ready to embrace! You may find it hard to justify spending big bucks on such a casual bag, but you’ll be surprised to see just how chic this season’s straw is. From cutesie polka dots to metallic details, some of these picks hardly look like the classic totes you’re probably picturing! Sure, they tend to be a bit of a bottomless pit when it comes to tossing in all your necessities, but then again, who really needs a bunch of fancy compartments when all you’re luggin’ around is a towel, some sunscreen, and the latest issue of In Style? Check out the slideshow for my 10 favorite straw bags for summer!

Bag Of The Week: Kooba Denim ‘Lana’ Tote

imageIt’s official. Denim is still in! The latest fad to take over the fashion world is denim bags and the ‘Lana’ Denim Tote by Kooba is the perfect summer accessory! Remember, no matter how in style denim may be, a head to toe denim look is never cute, make your denim bags look summer chic by pairing them with other fabrics. The Lana Denim Tote is large enough to carry all your summer needs, but the leather detailing makes it look more sophisticated than a plain canvas tote. Multiple pockets make storage easy and convenient, and adjustable straps allows you to customize the length. Pair this tote with linen shorts, or a cotton sundress and big shades for a stylish look that works just as well for a hot day in the city as it does for a beach BBQ. At close to $300, this Kooba tote bag is a little more than we’re used to paying for a casual summer bag, but the ‘Lana’ is so en vogue and versatile that it’ll be the only one you need!

Bag Of The Week: Matthew Williamson Atomic Clutch

imageEver since sequins really hit it big last fall and started dripping off the racks in the form of cardigans, leggings, blazers, and more, shimmery clutches are no longer that unique or unexpected in comparison. However, something about this Matthew Williamson Atomic Clutch seems totally fresh, despite its simple shape and all-over sparkle. Unlike traditional black, charcoal, or metallic silver, the opalescent purple and gold give the clutch a cool holographic-type gradient look, depending on how the light hits it, and the color combo is not only unique but more festive for the warmer months ahead. It’s perfect for a hot summer night out on the town, or a 4th of July party beneath the fireworks (no, it’s not too early to plan your outfit)! Normally a Matthew Williamson bag would burn a serious hole in your wallet, but for 60% off, it’s worth an extra gander!

Add Some Sportiness To Your Purse Collection With A Perforated Handbag

imageWhat I love about perforated leather is its ability to instantly add a sort of casual coolness to whatever it adorns in a way that doesn’t cheapen or dress it down. Whether your whole bag is perforated or just incorporates panels of the material, perforations add texture in a manner that’s never overdone or ostentatious like studs, for example, and somehow gives a handbag a sportier vibe that’s fresh for summer. In the case of this Diane von Furstenberg tote, perforations even give the illusion of all-over sparkle, when in reality it’s completely sequin-free (thank god)! And this bow-adorned Marc by Marc Jacobs bag is roughened up a bit by a panel of perforated leather to give it a cooler look that’s less cutesie than the almost too-sweet silhouette. Check out the slideshow for 10 perforated bags of all colors, shapes, and sizes!

Bag Of The Week: Rebecca Minkoff Lace Pouch

imageLace has the reputation of being suggestive and sexy, but let’s face it — it’s not always easily wearable. There are only so many ways to rock the lingerie-inspired trend before it starts pushing the boundaries of what looks like just plain ol’ underwear, and unless you’re Lady GaGa, lace-covered shades and lace leggings might be a little too “out there.” Leave it to the realm of handbags to mix leather and lace in a way that’s both classy and cute! The Rebecca Minkoff Lace Pouch is the perfect size for packing just your night-out necessities, and its cross-body design allows you to wear it comfortably whether you’re bar-hopping or window-shopping. It comes in blue and yellow as well, if those colors better suit your summer style, but I’m personally diggin’ the pink in contrast with the bag’s gunmetal hardware for that more girlie-edgy dichotomy. And at $98, it’s a pretty good deal if you’ve been hoping to add a Rebecca Minkoff bag to your collection!

Bag Of The Week: Tory Burch Tevin Mini Bag

imageHot on the heels of it-accessories guru Marc Jacobs, Tory Burch sure knows how to make great bags you want to take everywhere. Her latest creation, the Tevin Mini Bag is a must for your summer outfits. It’s large enough to fit a small wallet and beauty essentials whether you’re on a date or picnicking in the park with friends. My personal favorite is the red bag because you don’t always need basic black! The long chain handles keep your hands free for carrying all your shopping bags and coffee cups. There’s even a small mirror inside so you can touch up your lip gloss.

Travel Smart With A Duffel Bag

imageAside from the copious amounts of vintage dresses, high heels and makeup I constantly whip out my credit card to purchase, I’m also an avid buyer of plane tickets. I love to travel whether it’s a quick weekend trip to Los Angeles or a month in Europe. While I love to travel, I hate flying and I’m also super paranoid about checking in my luggage unless it’s absolutely necessary. So I’ve perfected the art of packing into a duffel bag. Before you think of smelly gym socks, duffel bags have come a long way since high school. Designers from Marc Jacobs to Rebecca Minkoff have their own version of a chic duffel bag. Check out the super luxe Andie Duffel Bag by Alexander Wang which I definitely don’t see anyone toting this to the gym! Another favorite pick of mine is the Sea Bags Large Duffle 5 Bag found at ASOS. Each bag is unique and made of old sails. Take a look at my slideshow to see more duffel bags fit for all your travels.
