DDB Chicago gives Skittles a pet cloud

Skittles continues its reputation for having the quirkiest advertising in town with this latest trio of spots, which introduce Freddie, a pet cloud…

The ads, from DDB Chicago, are directed by Chris Palmer and see Freddie and his owner in various situations, including a visit to the vets, and a trip to the groomers. The spots continue the oddball heritage built up for the sweet brand by TBWA Chiat Day which included hits such as Trade and Touch, and spawned many imitators. While these new ads may not quite have the genius touch of those early days (perhaps because the whole quirky sweet brand thing now seems a bit tired?), they are still a lot of fun. Watch them below:

The spot launches during a particularly busy (and creative) time within the charity sector, with many excellent ads released of late. While much of this work has taken a shock approach, however, this film is more gentle. The poem, which in the version above is voiced by Christopher Lee, muses on what it’s like to grow old, while a series of people aged from 0 to 100 take us on a journey through the decades. The film is thought-provoking and elegant (as long as you ignore the last frame, with Age UK’s logo, about which the less said, the better).

There is also a shorter version, voiced by actor Jonathan Pryce, shown below:

The ad was shot by Nadav Kander, who while world-renowned for his photography is less well known for his moving image work. In the next issue of CR, out later this week, he and Karmarama ECD Sam Walker talk about the process of making the film, and how it relates to Kander’s stills work. Shown above are two photographs from the shoot by Callum Head, which offers a hint of how it was done: there will also be more of these in the issue.

Canal+ launches ‘scream bank’ in new campaign

FCB has created a quirky new campaign for cable channel Canal+. It is based on the story of the Wilhelm Scream, a scream sound effect featured in a film in 1951 that has been used in over 200 movies since, and consequently haunts the widow of the man who recorded it…

The tale of Linda Dotson Wooley, the widow of actor Shep Wooley, who originally uttered the scream in the movie Distant Drums, forms the basis of a two-minute documentary about the Wilhelm Scream for Canal+, shown below. Shep’s scream has been used in countless famous movies, from Star Wars to Toy Story, and it’s quite amazing to hear the same sound pop up again and again: poor Linda.

In addition to the film, Canal+ has launched a website, Leave Wilhelm Alone, where you can record your own scream to be added to a ‘scream bank’ of options to be used instead of the Wilhelm Scream in future movies. On the site, you are invited to scream along to three different movies. The donated screams are shown on the site within the various clips and visitors can vote on their favourites: a crew of Canal+ experts will then choose a winner from among the most popular screams. Visit the site here.

Channel 4 Paralympic Games titles by Liquid

Liquid has created this rather fine set of animated titles that are currently being used to introduce Channel 4’s coverage of the Sochi Paralympic Games…

The titles follow Liquid’s previous work for the London 2012 Olympics, shown below, where the set of figures made up of 3D abstract shapes was first featured. For this new film, the figures have evolved and are now set in the snowy landscapes appropriate to the Winter Games. Linking both pieces of work is the soundtrack, Harder Than You Think by Public Enemy, which was also used in Channel 4’s much-celebrated Meet The Superhumans film for the 2012 Games.
