The Handstand for iPad

A handy iPad accessory that lets you use the device in more places

handstand-user1.jpg handstand-user2.jpg

Today’s saturated iPad accessories market makes it hard to offer up an impressive new addition, but Portland, OR-based entrepreneur Jamie Smith has turned technology on its head with the Handstand. The user-friendly design allows you to hold the tablet in one hand and rotate it 360 degrees, to easily toggle between landscape and portrait orientation. An elastic band keeps it secured and comfortable; when you feel like setting the iPad down, the Handstand serves as a supportive stand, resting the iPad at a slight incline for easy viewing.

“My career is one that has been characterized by identifying and filling a need that helps people run their business and personal lives more efficiently,” says Smith. The Handstand does just that, offering iPad users a convenient way of using the device in equally intelligible packaging.

The Handstand makes it easy to make presentations, manage a guest list and multitask doing just about anything. Molded from silicone instead of plastic, the simple switch is a big improvement in terms of comfort and durability.

The handstand currently sells online for $50.

Incoqnito

Transformers for adults—jewelry that conceals erotic accessories
TiChangDesk.jpg

When we came across industrial designer Ti Chang’s line of discreet pleasure devices at the Adult Entertainment Expo recently, the assortment of sleekly-designed sex toys far outshone the typically ill-conceived gadgets saturating the market. The second surprise came when we realized that each accessory doubles as a wearable fashion piece, cleverly disguising its true purpose. Some stand outs in her current nine-piece collection include the Droplet Necklace, with silver pendants that also happen to be small vibrators; the seductive Blade Necklace features a dull-edged knife sculpted from hand-cut glass that can be used to stimulate your erogenous zones; the Lash Belt conveniently turns from holding your pants up to keeping your loved one in order; the Leather Handcuffs are a great looking leather double cuff bracelet set that can be used for light restraint.

We followed up with Chang to learn more about the collection and her novel take on the toy industry.

What was your path to starting your own company?

I received my bachelors from Georgia Tech in Industrial Design. I started my career designing personal care products for women, mainly hair brushes. I then went on to design bicycle accessories for Trek Bicycle. I decided to go back to school for my Masters at the Royal College of Art in London. Afterward, I worked as a design consultant on various projects from branding, furniture, to home accessories. During this period I moved around a lot—London, China, New York, and Boston. It was great to experience vastly different projects and cultures which helped me to become a more well-rounded designer. I gained experience working on all aspects of bringing a company/product to life from brand conception to design and production. This gave me the confidence and tools to enable me to eventually start my own company.

Incoqnito1.jpg Incoqnito2.jpg
How did you evolve to designing intimate accessories?

It was a combination of things. The landscape of the American economy going down hill, so it was very hard to find projects or work. Even if there was work, it wasn’t particularly exciting or well-paid. Also because I care deeply about what I do—I have a hard time working on design projects I am not passionate about. It’s both my blessing and my curse. I made the leap into intimate accessories because it was an area that both fascinated me and to which I felt I had something to contribute.

Considering the interest in intimate accessories, why are so few brands design-oriented in the space?

Culturally the topic of sexuality is taboo. There is a strong cultural stigma with this industry where intimate accessories, adult novelty, toys and porn all get lumped together. So people tend to shy away from this topic. It’s not exactly dinner table conversation and generally people aren’t talking about it openly. The attitude around sexuality is very much an artifact of history—not the nature of sexuality. So people are projecting that historical view and being put off by it instead of embracing it for what it is. I think this stigma is what keeps people from thinking about this space and endeavoring to innovate and make products better.

How did you arrive at the concept of sex toys doubling as jewelry?

I was always disappointed at the lack of aesthetically elegant toys in this space. Why is everything hot pink, purple and rubbery? I wanted to bring a sense of timelessness like a piece of jewelry, something dignifying and beautiful, an object that you would want to keep for a long time. I don’t think it’s necessary to chose just one aspect of the function, why not have it all?

Where does your inspiration come from?

I’m inspired by the material world around me. As an industrial designer, I am drawn to problem solving through design of objects, the tactile experience and the desire to make things a little better.

incocnito6.jpg

Tell us about some of your products, like the Handcuff bracelets and Lash Belt.

I think it is interesting that many of the products enable experiences outside the bedroom, and I think I will leave it at that. The leather cuffs and the Lash belt are both fun. The cuffs are more understated, whereas the Lash belt is a stronger fashion/lifestyle statement.

I’m sure you have some great stories to tell, any you want to share?

Working in this industry, there are some great moments. One that comes to mind is the fact that my coworkers and I can go sex toy shopping and it’s totally normal, whereas in other companies, it would probably be an HR violation of some sort.

Any advice for those that want to get something for their partner?

If you are considering a gift from the Incoqnito collection, try to understand the taste and style of your partner. For the more adventurous couples, I would recommend the Razor for sensation play. For the those who like jewelry and edgy accessories, the Leather cuffs and the Droplet necklace are classic accessories that have a sexy twist that you both can enjoy!

C. Chauchat

More than meets the eye from ties handmade in an East Village living room
tiestudio3.jpg

Working out of an East Village apartment, Curie Choi and Beverly Liang meticulously craft their collection of “man enhancing” ties under the label C. Chauchat. The name, borrowed from German novel “The Magic Mountain” and its otherworldly temptress Madame Chauchat, also translates to “hot cat” in French. Much like their ties, the well-considered choice is both playful and has depth.

tiedouble6.jpg

By layering sheer fabric over opaque prints, the duo create a look that’s subtly complex. A gauzy black tones down a vivid jungle print, but even there faint inflections, like a pale paint splotch or muted stripe, show through. Employing a “special insane hand collaging” technique, Choi and Liang even produced a tie that features four layers of fabric—silk chiffon, tulle and two different printed cottons.

tiestudio2.jpg

When designing, the pair constantly think about what looks good on a man and how the tie fits into his world, but they use feminine fabrics and techniques from dressmaking. This “women’s take on masculinity” is inspired by the stylish men in their lives. While they appreciate refined dressing, the ties are meant as an everyday accessory, not a showpiece.

tiedouble3.jpg tiedouble4.jpg

Now in their third season, their latest collection was inspired by a “dandy on vacation,” presenting an assortment of rakish styles that channel Op Art, magic eye posters and David Hockney paintings. Also look out for a collaborative collection of scarves, ties and bow ties in Rober Gellar’s Fall/Winter 2011 season.

chauchat1.jpg

Each made by hand, the C. Chauchat ties and bow ties sell worldwide for $155-180 from Strasburgo in Japan, as well as from Creatures of Comfort, La Garçonne and Assembly in New York.

V&Y Mart

An L.A. stylist debuts her statement-making line of repurposed t-shirt necklaces

vandy2.jpg vandy3.jpg

When L.A.-based stylist Lauren Constantine needed more distinct accessories on set, she decided to make them herself. After several years of crafting one-off statement pieces, Constantine finally opened up shop, peddling two styles under her label V&Y Mart.

The V&Y neckpiece is comprised of upcycled t-shirts, ripped and twisted into a multifunctional scarf. Both a cozy cold weather accessory and bold face-framing necklace, you can wear the accessory year round, dressed up or down and adjusted with its hardware closure. Constantine explains, “It’s more important to me that clients celebrate their own sense of personal style and feel good in what they’re wearing, not just throw on a different trend each season.”

vandy1.jpg

Putting her sewing skills to use, Constantine crafted a collection of bows she calls El Bow Co. She stuffs each with tulle, and they come in a variety of adorable fabrics and sizes spanning small to Minnie Mouse-style large.

vandybow1.jpg vandybow2.jpg

“I’m really passionate about getting down with the sewing machine, and so any chance I have to do that is exciting,” says Constantine. “As a stylist, you hone skills as a visual artist—bring characters to life, create moods and make statements—which is really rewarding in and of itself. But, to bring wearable art to life and be a part of the creation process, from the initial swatch selection to the final stitch, is for me the biggest thrill.”

Bows span $22-36 and neckpieces sell for $58 from Constantine’s Etsy shop, V&Y Mart.

Nat-2

Paris-inspired booties and an LED watch from a sixth-generation Berlin shoe brand
nat2-1.jpg

Known for inventing four-in-one and two-in-one zipper shoes, Munich’s Nat-2 shows a simpler side of shoe design with their new desert boot-inspired line created just for girls. The suede Marais booties, named after the Parisian neighborhood, combine classic French subtlety with a flexible fit.

At the helm of Nat-2 is creative director Sebastian Thies, whose extensive know-how is due in part to his family’s storied history as innovative shoemakers. Originally founded by “Ferdinand Fischer” in 1856, the company folded during WWII, but was resurrected by Ingeborg Thies, Sebastian’s grandfather and a Fischer by birth. The company was renamed Thies-Fischer KG in 1949 and now produces several brands alongside Nat-2.

nat2time1.jpg nat2time2.jpg

In addition to their new streamlined shoe, Nat-2 recently introduced “Time”—a collection of plastic watches that reflect the pared-down aesthetic of the more grown-up streetwear scene. The patented 42 LED scroll system that lights the entire watch face up as each minute passes strikes a balance between the “keep it fresh, keep it classy” style that Sebastian has curated over the last three years. Perfect for the quantum computer nerd, the watch comes in several different colors including olive and purple.

The Nat-2 Time and Marais sell from the Nat-2 online shop as well as from retailers around the world.
