Rashid Rana

Things are not as they appear in this Pakistani artist’s pixelated works
rashidrana2.jpg

Working across mediums—sculpture, video installation and large-scale photography among them—Pakistani artist Rashid Rana explores the singular issue of South Asia’s struggle between tradition and modernity. Typically he uses a pixelated aesthetic to express how globalization and the media impact the region’s identity.

This approach separates out and reassigns associations between the part and whole as a way of challenging stereotypes. His work—on view at London’s Lisson Gallery—teeters between 2D and 3D perspectives, creating tension and forcing his audience to question reality while underlining his position that “we live in a state of duality.”

Rana’s series of sculptures, aptly called “Books,” are really aluminum cubes printed with pixelated photographs, putting the perceptions of three-dimensional space and form into play by toying with our sense of concrete information.

rashidrana10.jpg

Described by Rana as “unpacked abstraction,” his large-scale photographic work looks like a chaotic field of geometric shapes from afar. As you focus closer, the pixels reveal themselves as smaller, context-specific images disrupting the serenity of the work as a whole with their sheer volume.

Rashid Rana’s show will be at Lisson Gallery from 30 March 2011 through 30 April 2011, and is accompanied by a new monograph on the artist.

3D Art Book

A new book of eye-popping art from revered designer Tristan Eaton
3DBOOK_ENGLISH_RON.jpg

When Tristan Eaton isn’t designing toys or reworking brand identities as head of Thunder Dog Studios, he can be found collaborating with an array of today’s exciting artists. An incredibly talented designer in his own right—with works in the permanent collections of both the Cooper Hewitt Museum and MoMA—Eaton has been an advocate of street culture since his time at Kid Robot. In the forthcoming “3D Art Book” from Prestel, Eaton curates over 100 hundred eye-popping illustrations from a cast of influential graphic designers, painters and clothing brands.

Eaton’s love for stereoscopic images emerged at age 19, when as an apprentice at Detroit’s famed screen-printing shop Highway Press, he began silk screening 3D posters. Less than a decade later through his breakthrough solo show, “3D Happy Action Fun,” Eaton introduced the aesthetic into the concrete art gallery world. His work was so strongly received that shortly after he began working on a 3D project with a small group of artists including The London Police, Superdeux and Jeff Soto.

Eaton was inspired by reviving what was merely novel technology during the ’60s and seeing how it is reflected today, saying “When you compare the artists in this book, you will see that we share nostalgia for the good old days of alternative art and pop culture; when you contrast us, you will see how each of us outsiders have re-envisioned these references in our own unique ways.”

Taking four years for completion, works featured in the 224-page book include those from revered artists like Bill McMullen, Cey Adams, Dr. Revolt, Pose, Tara McPherson and Ron English. “3D Art Book” will be released in April 2011 and will include two pairs of retro 3-D glasses. The book is available for pre-order from Amazon and Powells.

Matt Shlian

New obsessively process-oriented sculptures by a paper engineer
shilian-trio.jpg

As teacher, paper engineer and artist Matt Shlian explains on his site, “researchers see paper engineering as a metaphor for scientific principals; I see their inquiry as basis for artistic inspiration.”
His geometric sculptures elegantly reflect this strong connection to the education and scientific communities, exploring the physicality of paper with his curiosity-driven approach.

shilian11.jpg shilian12.jpg

Creating his work through problem solving and experimentation, Shlian’s deceptively simple aesthetic is the result of meticulous techniques and even more obsessive ideas. While restricting his palate to monochrome shades of white, Shlian’s intricate forms take on the complexity of natural design, suggesting the cellular lattices at the root of biological mechanics.

His new edition “The Process Series” is just that—a trio of works created by delving into the process of layering sheets of paper cut on a flatbed plotter cutter. Limited to an edition of 20 of each, the works sell from the Ghostly Store for $100 a pop.

Cool Hunting Rough Cut: LoSiento

Watch our video on how a burgeoning design studio takes typography to the fourth dimension

by
Gregory Stefano

While in Barcelona recently (thanks to
Red
) we visited Borja Martínez, the founder of LoSiento, a studio that specializes in 3D typography, packaging and product design. Young and imaginative, the small firm is constantly pushing the limits of what can be accomplished with paper as a medium. One of Borja’s founding philosophies is encouraging self-initiated projects at the studio, an approach of constant experimentation that has given birth to LoSiento’s amazing 4D typography. We had the chance to talk to Borja and check out his studio in this video.
