John Martyn film by Elliot Dear

Short film ‘label’ Future Shorts is launching Music Matters, a celebration of the importance of music, with an event in London and a series of short films that are being released online…

Music Matters is described by its organisers as “a collective effort by artists and all those who work in and around music to remind listeners of its enduring value. Its mission is to provoke conversation about the significance of music and the impact it makes on each and every one of us.”

Blind Willie Johnson film by Matt Watkins

A series of short animated films are being released via the Future Shorts YouTube channel over the next week. Two are already online: a film about John Martyn, created by Elliot Dear (shown top), and one on Blind Willie Johnson by Matt Watkins, shown above. Other musicians that will be covered in future releases include Nick Cave and Sigur Rós.

There will also be a launch event for Music Matters at Cargo in London on Wednesday night (March 24). It will feature screenings of the films, djs and live art. There will be also be special guest musicians including Blur guitarist and general musical whiz Graham Coxon who will be performing a live rescoring of a short film soundtrack. Coxon’s rescore will be part-rehearsed, part-improvised, so undoubtedly will be exciting to watch, though tickets to the event appear to already be sold out. General info on Music Matters is on Facebook and at Futureshorts.com, however.
