There’s a difference of 2 chromosomes between the two species, 62 for donkeys and 64 for horses, yet they can still reproduce with each other. Mules, though, are sterile because of the chromosomal difference. My fascination with this phenomenon isn’t because I have some overly strong affection for farm animals but because I believe one day we’re going to encounter intelligent life from elsewhere in the universe. Yes, alien sex is what I’m talking about. Wouldn’t that be cool? If we encountered other intelligent life and reproduced with them? What kinds of beings would we produce?
