This week saw the launch of LLUSTRE.com – a brand new London-based product design blog and pop-up shop.
With a focus on curating a weekly selection of the best in contemporary design for your home, LLUSTRE.com is presenting the work of emerging designers alongside established names to spread the word about exciting products, and help designers reach a wider audience. They are a trusted guide to discovering great design for their member’s home bringing them a weekly mix of exclusive products, limited edition pieces and unmissable offers.
Over the next six months they will feature 250 designers including pieces from Plumen, Anglepoise, Normann Copenhagen, Stelton, Iittala to emerging talents Shan Valla, Thorody, All Lovely Stuff, Matilda, Umut Yamac, Wren Bikes and Katie Mawson – and artists Chris Brown, Moose Allain, Joe Joiner and Alison Hardcastle. Each week LLUSTRE presents a hand-picked selection of fresh products from new and established design talent to our members in a range of exclusives, limited editions, new launches and discounts.
Driven by frustration at the scarcity of exciting original products on the high street, LLUSTRE.com aims to be the destination for consumers to discover brilliant, authentic design, and a directory for great design talent. There are a few big names dominating the market in products for the home, and outside of London it can be difficult to discover designers who aren’t stocked in the big department stores or out of town superstores. LLUSTRE.com is a platform to promote brands and designer-makers who might be struggling to get their voices heard in a market dominated by high volume mass-produced objects.
As an online pop-up shop, LLUSTRE.com can work in a uniquely flexible way with designers – to feature very limited editions and one-off pieces, as well as high volumes. It’s a risk-free opportunity for designers to be introduced to a design-hungry community who are looking for an alternative to ubiquitous flat-packed furniture and characterless homewares. Unlike other online pop-up shops, LLUSTRE.com is working with designers to commission new work, produce exclusive products, launch new ranges and initiate collaborations. This isn’t about selling end of line products off cheap; this is about making brilliant innovative design accessible and understandable to everybody, and at the same time to champion talented new designers.
LLUSTRE.com believes that behind every design is an even greater story. They are meeting with designers and makers to learn about the inspirations behind the work, as well as design and manufacture processes. Their conversations with designers are published in the Journal alongside the design shops, to give an insight into the background to the product, giving context and depth to the products they are selling. These stories and designer profiles will remain on the site indefinitely, making LLUSTRE.com the place to go to browse for inspiration and design talent, and as the sales are short, once the event on LLUSTRE.com is over, members will be directed to go to the designers themselves – or their retail partners – to buy the products they’ve seen on LLUSTRE.com.
LLUSTRE.com was founded by Vivienne Bearman (web product specialist from Playfish.com) and Tracy Dorée (ex venture capitalist and lover of design). Our team of twenty design, architecture and technology experts based in Clerkenwell are working together to create the number one destination for discovering, discussing and buying original and authentic homeware online. With products individually selected by a team of design experts including Megan Charnley, RCA alumni, Jenny Voyce, former buyer at Liberty and Southbank Centre, and Emanuela Ferrero, formerly of Few and Far and Hidden Art, and with a style panel that includes the likes of Marcus Fairs of Dezeen, Rachel Isherwood of Tent and Tamara Heber-Percy of Mr and Mrs Smith, this is a business which has put the pure love of design at the centre of its offering.
