Harvey LED task lamp launched on Kickstarter

Harvey LED task lamp launched on Kickstarter

Dezeen promotion: designer David Oxley has launched a slender, adjustable LED task lamp on crowd-funding website Kickstarter.

Harvey LED task lamp launched on Kickstarter

The Harvey LED task lamp has adjustable joints that are held together with magnets rather than springs or cantilevers, allowing a wider variety of movements than a typical desk lamp. LEDs mounted in the head direct light towards a metal reflector, giving an even quality of light.

Named after English physician William Harvey, the design is inspired by the classic form of traditional surgeons’ lamps and it is available in either black or white. A smaller version with only two joints, the Harvey Jnr, is also available in both colours.

Pledging to buy a lamp will ensure the design goes into production. Harvey is priced at £99 and the Harvey Jnr is £79, both with free shipping in the UK. A universal plug is included for international buyers. Visit the Harvey LED task lamp Kickstarter page here for more information and to back the project.

Here is some text from David Oxley:

Project description

The Harvey LED task lamp combines state of the art LED lighting with a unique new fully adjustable joint.

Innovative new joint: Harvey is fully adjustable

What makes Harvey unique are the magnetic joints consisting of precision die cast aluminium with neodymium magnets housed inside. This allows for a massive range of movement and positions, whilst requiring the lightest of touches to adjust. The user can simply twist, push or pull the head to where they need more light. The strength of the magnets (four for each joint), combined with the super light body, results in a firm hold with no need for springs or cantilevers.

Cutting edge LEDs: Harvey is super bright and energy efficient

I named the lamp after William Harvey, the English physician who described completely the circulation of blood in the body. That’s because the light in Harvey is inspired by surgeons lamps, and consists of super bright Philips Luxeon LEDs which are fixed on an aluminium heat sink in the centre of the head. In my design, this light is diffused through a frosted glass disc and bounces off the curved metal reflector giving a well-directed even light source (avoiding the harshness often associated with LED lighting). The lamp produces 370 lumens of brightness whilst using only 3 Watts so is energy ‘A’ rated. However, in some situations super bright is not always best, and a dimmer is included so Harvey is at home in the home.

Harvey Junior

Harvey Junior is a smaller version of the Harvey lamp, with one less joint. It is ideal as a bedside lamp. All other aspects of Harvey Junior are the same as the original.

Price

Harvey is priced at £99 and Harvey Junior is £79, with free delivery in the UK. These prices are a major discount from the future retail price, and are exclusive for the Kickstarter campaign which is ending on December 14th.

Design Industry ceramic tiles by Refin

Design Industry ceramic tiles by Refin

Dezeen promotion: the Design Industry ceramic tile collection by Italian company Refin features two ranges of tiles that resemble metallic surfaces and cement finishes.

Design Industry ceramic tiles by Refin

Refin created the Oxyde tiles to look like shades of oxidised metals such as rusting iron, while the Raw range is designed to appear like rough cement and peeling plaster.

Design Industry ceramic tiles by Refin

The tiles were launched during the Cersaie 2012 design event in Bologna in September.

Design Industry ceramic tiles by Refin

Below is some text by Refin:

Launched during Cersaie in September this year, Design Industry is a new collection of ceramic tiles from Italian manufacturer Refin. Design Industry is inspired by urban design and contemporary architectural trends, and comprises two different ranges – Oxyde and Raw – that resemble metallic surfaces and cement finishes.

Design Industry ceramic tiles by Refin

In addition, the collection is offered in a wide range of tile sizes, colours and textures to enable the utmost freedom in project planning, indoors and out.

Design Industry ceramic tiles by Refin

The tiles in the Oxyde range evoke the glazed look of oxidised metals combining bright, dark and rust shades, whilst the Raw range echoes the chromatic and structural interpretation of raw cement and flaking plaster.

Design Industry ceramic tiles by Refin

Design Industry tiles are available in two new maxi-sizes; 75×75 cm and 75×150 cm, launched after extensive research and investment by Refin. The 75×75 cm slab is the largest size that can be installed by a single technician, so it combines easy handling and installation with the strong aesthetic impact typical of large scale tiles.

Design Industry ceramic tiles by Refin

The 75×150 cm size, one of the largest available on the market, enhances the texture and the graphic effects and reduces the number of grout lines, contributing to the continuous effect of the surface. It is suitable both for indoor venues and for ventilated facades and allows for different sub-cuts.

Philips LightCollector App now available to download

Here is some more information from Philips:

Philips and Light Collective offer a new crowd-sourced and image-based app for Lighting designers to share inspiration

The LightCollector app from Philips and Light Collective is based upon two lighting design fundamentals: the desire to be inspired and the need to store the things that inspire us so we can use them when required. LightCollector is an opportunity to create a crowd sourced global image collection for the professional lighting industry sharing to aid greater knowledge, ease of working and collective creativity.

Philips LightCollector App now available to download

As explained by Martin Lupton and Sharon Stammers from the lighting consultancy Light Collective “We know how often we trawl our image library to find the perfect image to illustrate our concept to our client. We know that somewhere, in the depths of our not-quite-adequately filed hard drive we have that photograph we once took, in that city we once visited, of daylight transmitted through a stained glass window and creating an explosion of colour on the floor. Finding the image allows us to explain what we are trying to achieve in our design. LightCollector is a resource for collecting these light based images.”

Philips LightCollector App now available to download

‘’We loved the idea of an inspirational light and lighting database as a way to spark and share creativity for each design challenge. We hope to support the design community in creating better and more ground-breaking solutions harnessing light that impact people lives through this shared inspiration.’’ Matthew Cobham, responsible for lighting application at Philips Lighting.

Philips LightCollector App now available to download

The result is an easy to use App, which will enable lighting and design professionals to speed up their image searching requirements and to feed their creative need for inspiration. As a mobile enabled tool, it allows use of the App while on the go on both Apple and Android platforms. The App is the key to initial involvement in LightCollector but the web interface is equally important.

Here’s some more information from Arper:

Arper launches new Juno and Saya chairs to the UK market

Treviso-based furniture design company Arper open their London showroom in September 2012 and present its two new collections: Juno and Saya. These two collections differ quite dramatically in terms of style and material yet both are entirely reflective of Arper’s commitment to systems and adaptability.

New Arper showroom to open in London

Above: Juno collection by James Irvine

Saya – design by Lievore Altherr Molina 2012

Saya takes its inspiration from nature and a sense of ‘home’ – it evokes feelings of warmth through its material and life in its form. It’s a striking and unique graphic sign, rendered in wood. Its graceful curves resemble that of a small animal – a deer – with four legs and an arching neck. Arper sees the chair as something of a manifesto, an ode to wood and a celebration of the organic. It’s about using fluid, expressive lines to create something inviting. The shape of the chair’s back is a gesture – like a spread of the arms to invite an embrace.

New Arper showroom to open in London

Above: Juno collection by James Irvine

With an oak veneer, Saya’s colour finishes include natural, white, black, ochre, teak and three shades of red which complement individual or group use. Designed with residential and corporate uses in mind, Saya fits into every environment like all Arper products. The legs are also customisable in the Arper tradition in wood or chrome.

New Arper showroom to open in London

Above: Juno collection by James Irvine

Juno – design by James Irvine, 2012

Juno is Arper’s vision for the future of the plastic chair – with the design concept closer to that of a solid wood chair. It is Arper’s first piece made entirely of gas-assisted injection-molded polypropylene. Cast in a single form, it is incredibly light in silhouette, weight and impact. It is simple and uniform but not without personality – an exciting expression of the technology used to develop Juno, whilst remaining true to the fluidity and beauty of all Arper products. Juno is all about efficiency and versatility. It’s ideal for both residential and corporate environments, both indoor and outdoor. This singular, simple shape is available in five colors – white, sand, anthracite, orange, yellow – with closed or open back, with or without armrests. It can also be customised with sleek upholstery for the seat and backrest, with all variations stackable to allow for large-scale use and storage.

New Arper showroom to open in London

Above: Juno collection by James Irvine

Living Systems

Arper’s approach revolves around the historic notion of ‘Living Systems’, a theory that studies how different elements, affected by context and interaction, create spontaneously organized structures. In applies to Arper’s approach to the design of new products but also to the way these products are presented, interpreted and expressed. Arper’s intention is to create products that can adapt and interact with the context they are intended for. Saya and Juno represent different – but balancing – aspects of this. An open-ended and generous design approach allows for an exchange between the environment and the product. The products are only finished when their context has been decided.

Here is some more information from Refin:

Ceramiche Refin launch new collection with studio FM Milano

Cersaie 2012 – Bologna, 25-29 September
Hall 36 Stand B32-C37/B33

The merger of culture, innovation and creativity has always been a characteristic of DesignTaleStudio, Refin’s ceramic experimentation laboratory. Working for the first time with studio FM Milano, a Milan-based graphic design agency, has led to the creation of Frame – a unique, bold and graphic collection of ceramic tiles.

Frame tile collection by Refin

Frame is a collection where graphic language uses the most modern ceramic technology to create highly decorative surfaces. Frame takes inspiration from materials, objects and traditional designs evolving and transforming them into a new aesthetic.

Frame tile collection by Refin

Comprised of four designs – Carpet, Geometric, Majolica, and Weave – the entire Frame collection uses graphic design in an inventive and contemporary way, re-interpreting traditional decorated ceramics. The design also becomes fragmented and the scale changes perception of the how the decorative element is seen. The result is an exciting new surface pattern that can easily be used by architects and interior designers to create innovative residential and commercial spaces.

Frame tile collection by Refin

“In planning the FRAME collection we took inspiration from traditional decorations that didn’t have much in common with each other, looking for new interpretations and introducing some new elements. In the case of Majolica, for example, we took a classic example apart and reinterpreted it in a contemporary way, introducing colour and size variations (from big to small). Moreover, Refin’s innovative technology allowed us to print different versions of the same subject and combine them together to create an original and sophisticated “patchwork” effect with a strong decorative and commercial impact.”
