Dezeen promotion: Italian brand Pedrali has released a colourful furniture collection for use in all areas of the workplace.
The Office 2.0 comprises chairs, armchairs, modular seating, tables and stools designed in response to today’s more open and flexible office layouts.
The simple shapes and colourful upholstery of the furniture allow it to look as appropriate in work stations as it does in meeting rooms and reception areas.
Some pieces were designed by Pedrali’s in-house team, while other items are the work of Italy-based designers Marc Sadler, Claudio Dondoli and Marco Pocci, Alessandro Busana and Cazzaniga-Mandelli-Pagliarulo.
The massive changes occurring in workplaces, driven by technological progress, have profoundly influenced the design of contemporary offices.
Thanks to the introduction of new devices for mobile communication the employees do not have to be physically present in the office. They have to be available 24/7 but they are not bound to their desks as they live the work environments in a more dynamic way.
Based on an extensive analysis of these changes, Pedrali has come up with a wide range of new fittings that are able to respond to the new and emerging demands of the second generation office: chairs, armchairs, modular seating, tables and stools for reception areas and conference rooms, open areas for meetings and rapid exchanges of information, furniture for break out areas and canteens.
A clean and bright coloured collection that has been also selected to furnish some areas of the Google Campus in Ireland, designed by the Swiss architecture studio Camenzind Evolution in collaboration with local firm Henry J. Lyons Architects.

Malmö by Cazzaniga-Mandelli-Pagliarulo
A collection of ash wood furniture born from an imaginary journey along the sides of a Scandinavian lake. When, in 2012, the chair, the armchair and the table have been presented, immediately garnered the interest of the market. Both the chair and armchair have ash timber frame in bleached or black stained finish; multilayer, fabric or leather upholstered shell. Malmö extendable table has ash wooden legs matched with solid laminate or ash veneered table top.
The armchair also won two international awards: the Good Design Awards, the prestigious award sponsored by the Museum of Architecture and Design “Chicago Athenaeum” and the Red Dot Design Award 2013.
For the Salone del Mobile 2013 the Malmö family expanded to new contexts entering in lounge environments, waiting areas and cafes. Richard Rogers RA: Inside Out will explore the ideas and ethos of the internationally renowned architect and urbanist Lord Rogers of Riverside. Timed to coincide with Rogers’ 80th birthday, the exhibition will examine his social, political and cultural influences and their connection to his architecture. Previously unseen original material, drawings and personal items, will present a unique insight into the thinking behind one of the world’s most celebrated architects. Richard Rogers RA: Inside Out will be held in Burlington Gardens, the Royal Academy’s new venue for contemporary art and architecture.
The exhibition will draw on key stages in Rogers’ life, from the influence of his Italian family, his experience of wartime and post-war Britain, his education at the Architectural Association and Yale, and the impact of seeing new American architecture and technology. Visitors will be introduced to Rogers’ principles through the presentation of major projects and collaborations, revealing his pioneering ideas about architecture and his belief in the need to create vibrant cities for everyone.
Rogers has consistently worked with themes that are far wider than conventional architectural thinking, articulating them as a spokesperson, writer, politician and activist, as well as an architect. For over half a century, Rogers has advocated the social objectives of architecture, the importance of public space, urban regeneration and better planning, through innovative design. He has played a pivotal role in master-planning and shaping government policy on urban development, believing that architecture is the most powerful agent for social change.
A number of high-profile projects that incorporate Rogers’ architectural principles will be showcased. These will include the Centre Pompidou, designed with Renzo Piano and still considered one of the most radical modern buildings since its opening in 1977, the Grade 1 listed headquarters for Lloyd’s of London, and the Bordeaux Law Courts. Through these projects Rogers has established himself and his practice, Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, as standing at the forefront of the architecture industry.
The exhibition will bring together the far reaching effects that Rogers’ interest in the politics of social justice has had on architecture and public policy.
Join the debate
To encourage visitors to engage in the debates and issues around architecture today, the final room in the exhibition will be a space for dialogue and discussion, events and workshops, where visitors can share their views and hear from high- profile speakers in related fields. Also look out for Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners Manufactured House in the courtyard through August until early September. This innovative, flat packed, environmentally efficient home is an example of how new building technologies can help shape better mass housing.

Unique Youngstar: the nominees have been selected
Jury announces 15 finalists – exhibition of the prototypes within the “garden unique” format – official award-ceremony during the unique hour.
Once again this year the visitors of the spoga+gafa will hear the words: “And the winners are…”. Namely, since the successful introduction of the exclusive “garden unique” format in the year 2011, the accompanying young designer competition has been extremely popular. New this year: under the title “unique Youngstar” a total of 15 ideas will be showcased in a prototype exhibition at the world’s leading garden trade fair.
Subsequently, the young designers will battle it out for the coveted title “unique Youngstar 2013”. The ultimate winners of the prizes endowed with prize-money totalling 7,000 Euros, will be announced during the “unique hour” on September 8th. In addition to the three winners selected by the jury, the Koelnmesse will also be awarding a prize that has been voted by the public.
In total 62 projects from 24 countries were submitted to the competition with the theme “Outdoor Living”. Design students and young designers, who have completed their studies no longer than three years ago, were eligible for participation. There was no limitation to the creativity of the competition entries: from outdoor furniture, to accessories or sunshade products, to outdoor lights, flooring suitable for outdoors or plant pots, through to grills – the submitted ideas didn’t make it easy for the jury to select their 15 favourites.
The jury’s decisions are based on the following essential assessment criteria: overall concept, originality of design, conceptual and visionary quality, functionality and the quality of presentation.
The competition once again boasted a star-studded panel of judges in 2013, comprising of the following team of experts: Tobias Lutz, founder and CEO of Architonic AG; Marcus Fairs, Chief Editor of dezeen; Eric Degenhardt, designer at Studio Eric Degenhardt; Karen Bofinger, Editor of the Architectural Digest, Camila Vega Faba and Harry Paul van Ierssel, both designers and co-founders of Harry&Camila.
Prominently positioned
The prototypes of the designs of the 15 nominees will be exhibited at the spoga+gafa 2013 in the exclusive “garden unique” sector. In addition to having the opportunity to win the coveted prize, the young designers are also offered a unique presentation platform in an exclusive environment.
Those, who were not able to convince the international expert jury in the end, still have the chance to claim the prize awarded by the public. The 15 finalists will be presented on the competition’s homepage www.gardenunique.de/youngstars from May 24th to August 31st, 2013, since the prize awarded by the public will be determined by online voting.
The results of the three prizes awarded by the jury and of the prize selected by the public will be announced at 5 pm on September 8th, in Hall 10.2 during the “unique hour”. The winners can look forward to prize-money to the value of 3,000 Euros (1st prize), 2,000 Euros (2nd prize), 1,000 Euros (3rd prize) and 1,000 Euros (Audience Award) respectively.
