Dezeen Watch Store: Sol, Shin Azumi‘s solar-powered watch for Japanese brand IDEA, is now available at Dezeen Watch Store.

Sol by Shin Azumi at Dezeen Watch Store

In contrast with normal solar-powered watches that seek to hide away the photovoltaic cell, Azumi draws attention to the cell by mounting it in Sol’s moulded polyurethane strap to give it the same prominence as the digital display.

The solar cell supplements the watch’s internal battery.

Here are some more details from Azumi:

Sol

The concept of this watch has come from my love of being in the sun. Sunshine provides me with a simple pleasure and gives energy to my body.

The design also shows my expectations and respect for solar power, as a technology that creates a clean source of energy.

Thinking about a typical solar watch, the solar cell is often disguised or hidden away from view. I wanted to put focus on the solar cell as a design feature to express its importance.

Untrod

I wear a product. Beyond fashion or status. This is a new design project which questions existing product typologies.

“Untrod” is the project which challenges to find the product design possibility beyond existing status.

By collaborating with designers who work successfully world-wide, we’ll seek to question existing product typologies and try to give these a new meaning. The first theme is “watch”, but our first point of view is never to see a watch in its conventional form factor. In this project you will meet a new “watch” both in concept and its meaning.

LUMINAIRE WELCOMES PATRICIA URQUIOLA TO MIAMI FEBRUARY 3, 2011

LECTURE
Thursday, February 3
6-7pm
Fewell Gallery / Coral Gables Museum 285 Aragon Street Coral Gables

RECEPTION
Immediately following the lecture
Luminaire Showroom 2331 Ponce de Leon Boulevard Coral Gables

On the eve of its 37th anniversary, Luminaire is pleased to welcome internationally celebrated architect / designer Patricia Urquiola to its Coral Gables flagship showroom on Thursday, February 3. As one of the most recognized visionaries in the arena of contemporary design, Urquiola has broken through the ceiling of the mainly male-dominated industry and made it her own. Attributing her success to the influence of prominent mentors such as Achille Castiglioni, Vico Magistretti and Piero Lissoni, Urquiola’s brilliant work is internationally recognized for its distinctive progressive qualities. Combining fearless experimentation with a unique approach to pattern and form, her products reflect an unabashed passion for design. From sustainable product design for the bath to cutting edge furniture, her innovative voice has made her a force to be reckoned with in the 21st century. Patricia Urquiola has also been a pinnacle of Luminaire’s “Love” fundraising series where she, along with several other renowned designers, donated their time to create one-of-a-kind designs which have helped Luminaire raise close to one million dollars for cancer research.

For over 36 years, Luminaire has been a pioneering force in the design world, a result of the uniquely personal and long-lasting relationships the company has cultivated with the most innovative designers and manufacturers. B&B Italia, who represents many of Urquiola’s creations, has been a close friend and collaborator of Luminaire for nearly 25 years. Their ability to capture the essence of contemporary culture, to sense and anticipate trends, and to respond to changes in taste and living needs, has resulted in a collection of world-famous furnishings, which account for a crucial chapter in the history of Italian design. These factors, and a passion for staying at the forefront of design and innovation, have also contributed to the profound partnership that B&B Italia has shared with Luminaire since 1986.

Join us at Luminaire’s Coral Gables Showroom for what will surely be a riveting lecture followed by a reception with Urquiola and her work, including the introduction of the Bend sofa, which has received critical acclaim for its ingenious technical features.

DESIGNER BIOGRAPHY

Patricia Urquiola grew up in Oviedo, Spain and studied architecture in Madrid before transferring to the Politecnico di Milano. There she studied under mentor Achille Castiglioni, who would have an immense impact on the course of her career. Working in the product development office of De Padova with Vico Magistretti from 1990-1996, Urquiola also maintained an associate practice between 1993-1996 with architects Marzia De Renzio and Emanuela Ramerino, with whom she was engaged in the architectural design of showrooms, restaurants and franchising. Joining Piero Lissoni in 1996, she remained as head of his design group until 2001, when she left to open her own studio specializing in design, exhibitions, art direction and architecture.

Urquiola’s most recent high-profile commercial endeavors include striking interiors for Barcelona’s Mandarin Oriental Hotel and the W Retreat & Spa on Vieques Island as well as a new H&M store in London. Extending her reach ever further, in 2010, she collaborated with designer Giulio Ridolfo on an installa- tion called ‘the dwelling lab,’ in which she explored the interior and exterior of the new BMW 5 series Gran Turismo.

Urquiola has been the recipient of numerous accolades including those from ADI Design Index, the International Design Yearbook, the IMM Cologne Award, Good Design Awards from the Chicago Athenaeum, the Red Dot Award and the Elle Decoration International Awards. Additionally, several of Urquiola’s designs are in the permanent collection of New York’s Museum of Modern Art. Uquiola also graced the cover of Fast Company’s annual “Masters of Design” issue in 2010.

B&B ITALIA

Ever since its foundation in 1966, B&B Italia has been a leader in the contemporary furnishing sector. The com- pany has won international acclaim as a representative of Italian furniture design, both for homes (B&B Italia home division) and public areas (B&B Italia contract division). The group’s headquarters are located north of Milan, in a prestigious building designed by Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers.

B&B Italia’s furnishings collection stems from the group’s capacity to represent contemporary culture and respond quickly to the new needs that emerge from today’s evolving lifestyles. It is this alchemy resulting from a mix of creativity, innovation and production that creates modern, yet timeless, pieces of furniture.

Above: Canasta by Patricia Urquiola for B&B Italia

To this end, B&B Italia collaborates with international designers, leaving its own distinctive mark on each product: every design is unique, an exemplification of the values of research, creativity and function. The importance of research, which has always been a fundamental aspect of the group’s development, is evident in the in-house research and development centre. The centre’s highly innovative nature has earned it several acknowledgements, including 4 “golden compasses” one of which, the most important one in 1989, for “constant work towards integration with the aim of combining the values of scientific and technological research with those of a functional and expressive product”. Standing out for innovation, quality, service, design and prestige; B&B Italia has become member of Fondazione Altagamma, which brings together Italian companies of international renown that operate at the higher end of the market and that exude Italian culture and style in their company and product management activities.

Tudor Glamour Double Date and Tudor Heritage Chrono

Dezeen promotion: Swiss watchmakers Tudor present two models in their 2010 collection, including the Tudor Heritage Chrono (above).

Tudor Glamour Double Date (below) features two windows in the face that display the date.

The Tudor brand was created by Rolex founder Hans Wilsdorf in 1946.

Here are some more details from Tudor:

With both past and present as muse, the new TUDOR models tell timeless tales of elegance and performance. Of form and function. Of the dramatic tension that results when watchmaking technology translates into a unique style of accessible sophistication.

In a language that speaks both to, and of, a generation which enjoys an ongoing dialogue with the beauty and pleasure found at the interface of design and technicity.

Designed for performance. Engineered for elegance. The TUDOR timepieces for 2010 are a masterful remix of functional beauty and quality at the service of reliability. All of which communicate the power of the brand’s history and heritage.

Indeed, today’s retro chic models by TUDOR capture the spirit of a brand that for over six decades has captivated an audience as daring and design-conscious as it is demanding.

An audience distinguished by a keen appreciation of quality timepieces that are seemingly sporty yet of consummate refinement. Men and women, with a love of story, who see beauty and boldness in the perfect line. Seduction and proportion in the perfect curve. Who recognize, at a glance, the execution of perfect performance.

TUDOR Heritage Chrono

The 2010 TUDOR Heritage Chrono mirrors the original shape and proportions of the middle case, bezel, lugs and bracelet of the 1970s model. But a closer look reveals a series of new and beautifully executed design details. Notably, the bevelled and polished edges of the lugs, the slick, stylized shoulders to protect the crown, and the knurled edge of the rotatable bezel and of the pushers that flank a knurled winding crown to improve grip.

The dial, available in either grey on black or black on grey, is further enhanced with stunning orange details and features 3-D applique rather than printed pentagonal-shaped hour markers and two counters. The 45-minute counter reiterates the counter of the 1970s, dictated by the very structure of its 7734 Valjoux movement and the need for optimal legibility.

The thicker, wider, sleeker watch case of the TUDOR Heritage Chrono, once 40 mm and now 42 mm, is altogether in keeping with the dimensions of today’s chronographs. It also boasts the reference 7033 bidirectional rotatable bezel, originally designed for the 1970s first edition of the watch but never distributed.

Today it bears the reference number 70330, with a black eloxed aluminium disc, and comes with both a three-link solid steel bracelet with a new clasp and TUDOR shield logo, as well as, yes, a black, grey and orange fabric strap, with a newly- developed vintage- and seat belt-inspired buckle.

Can’s see the movie? Click here.

Tudor Glamour

The dial, available in black, silver or dark grey, is distinguished by a dramatic double date window at 12 o’clock and a small seconds counter that makes its debut at 6 o’clock and is subtly adorned by the return of the TUDOR rose pattern, reminis- cent of the brand’s earliest logo from the 1930s and 1940s.

Self-winding and waterproof to 100 metres (330 feet), the TUDOR Glamour Double Date is fitted with a strap in either black lizard or black calf with a crocodile pattern, both with folding clasp, or either a steel or steel and yellow gold bracelet with a TUDOR Glamour clasp.

Tudor Glamour Double Date

The tango, possibly the most sophisticated, sensual and seductive of dance genres, is also the most demanding technically. And the rose, a timeless symbol, long associated with the TUDOR brand, evokes beauty, passion and perfection.

Inspired by the palpable emotions and aesthetics of the two, and drawing on the characteristic elegance and elan of the TUDOR Glamour collec- tion, the new TUDOR Glamour Double Date is the ultimate expression of retro chic and sensuality.

“Smooth, suave and suggestive” best describe the lines of the shining-armour-of-a-case and double bezel in polished steel that exquisitely frame a dial with open-work feuille hands and a domed sapphire crystal. While respecting the shape and proportions of the other models of the TUDOR Glamour collection, the case, for the first time, measures a handsome 42 mm.

Can’s see the movie? Click here.

History

“For some years now I have been considering the idea of making a watch that our agents could sell at a more modest price than our Rolex watches, and yet one that would attain the standards of depend- ability for which Rolex is famous. I decided to form a separate company, with the object of making and marketing this new watch. It is called the Tudor Watch Company.”

This announcement was made on 6 March 1946 by Hans Wilsdorf who, having created Rolex in the first decade of the 20th century, was already a leading figure in the upmarket Swiss watchmaking world. It marked the birth of both the TUDOR brand and its production and communications strategy.
