The information below is from Moroso:

Pond – design by Nendo
The narcissist low table.

Pond illustrates the seductive mystery of an image reflected in a mirror. The idea of a pond as seen in the table’s round shape and in its inspiration which reveals the silence of Nature, the hush of the woods and the trees in bloom reflected inside it.

The table has a simple structure: three rods raise and separate two tabletops, one decorated and upside down, the other a mirror that expands the table’s heigh and depth. But the idea behind this design conceals a particularly fascinating design study.

In fact Pond embodies the dualism of right and reverse as a symbol of nature/earth (light and dark( and of reflected images (which reproduce but are also projected) within a reciprocal relationship involving an enigmatic vision of space and an aesthetic recreated in the decoration.

Available in painted steel, the Pond low table is the perfect addition to any interior.

Milan 2011: Brazilian designers Fernando and Humberto Campana present this wrinkly armchair for Italian brand Edra at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan this week.

Grinza by Fernando and Humberto Campana for Edra

Called Grinza, the design has a steel frame covered in polyurethane foam and folds of leather or fur.

The show continues unto 17 April. See all our stories about Milan 2011 »

Here’s a bit of text from Edra:

“Grinza” armchair, design Fernando and Humberto Campana

The Campana brothers, in their years with Edra, have always considered the material with which each piece is realized as a value unto itself.

From the wooden slats of the Favela chair, to the long strands of raffia of the Cabana container, to the curved stainless steel of the Corallo chair or the 120 meters of velvet tubing of the Boa sofa. And now there’s Grinza, which has a steel tube frame and polyurethane padding, with great expanses of leather or eco-fur draped softly over the structure.

The information that follows is from Kartell:

Dialogue between natural realities and artificial Foliage, the sofa clearly bears the graphic hallmark of Patricia Urquiola as an object that looks as if it just grew naturally in plastic. The leaves form a crown resting on a framework of branches which virtually form a seat. Foliage is a sofa with great personality featuring a seat with top-stitched embroidery on four round legs. Cosy and soft, Foliage offers two roomy seats. The top-stitching runs over the entire surface and on the back too making the sofa a standalone piece that can be placed even in the centre of a room and seen from all sides.

Design: Patricia Urquiola
Material: Frame – batch dyed technopolymer thermoplatic
Seat – polyurethane foam padding with quilted elastic fabric covering
Size: L. 185 cm, H. 90 cm, D. 90 cm
Colours: red fabric, cream frame; cream fabric, acid green frame; green fabric, black frame; petrol blue fabric, hazelnut frame; sugar bag blue fabric, red frame; black fabric, cream frame; sand fabric, cream frame; acid green fabric, red frame

Origin part II: Balance by BCXSY

Origin part II Balance by BCXSY

Milan 2011: Eindhoven designers BCXSY present a collection of rugs woven by Bedouin women in Israel at Spazio Rossana Orlandi in Milan this week.

Origin part II Balance by BCXSY

The rugs are woven by hand in four sizes on ground looms using wool from local desert sheep.

Origin part II Balance by BCXSY

The four pieces are then joined in different configurations to create rugs of the required size and shape.

Origin part II Balance by BCXSY

Colours are taken from the desert surroundings where the pieces are made and details from traditional rug making crop up like fringing on selected edges and a single green tassel on each piece.

Origin part II Balance by BCXSY

Called Balance, the project forms the second phase of their Origin series where the duo work closely with skilled craftspeople. See the first in the series in our earlier story.

Origin part II Balance by BCXSY

The project remains on show at Spazio Rossana Orlandi, Via Matteo Bandello 14/16, 20123 Milan until 17 April.

Origin part II Balance by BCXSY

The text below is from BCXSY:

Origin part II: Balance

Origin – our explorations into traditional crafts from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines. Lakiya Negev Weaving – an organization of Bedouin artisans, initiated by SIDREH, a non-profit organization focused on improving the socioeconomic situation of Bedouin women living in Israel’s Negev Desert.

Origin part II Balance by BCXSY

Balance – the results of our collaboration with SIDREH and the women weavers in Lakiya. Balance consists of a series of seven area rugs woven in the Bedouin tradition by the women in Lakiya, Israel. Each rug is hand woven on traditional ground looms using the wool of local desert sheep.

Origin part II Balance by BCXSY

From the dying of the yarn to the weaving and final construction, each rug is the result of the collaborative efforts of many of the women in Lakiya. Through a craft that is central to Bedouin social and cultural heritage, the weavers are able to produce an extremely high-quality, durable and beautiful material.

Origin part II Balance by BCXSY

By creating a culturally acceptable employment opportunity for women, Lakiya Weaving produces short-term and long-term benefits to the Arab Bedouin community. The project remains the only possible employment for many isolated women who have suffered from the impacts of social upheaval.

Origin part II Balance by BCXSY

SIDREH’s focus is to empower, represent, and improve the socioeconomic situation of these Bedouin women, women who exist in a constant state of inequality, of imbalance.

Origin part II Balance by BCXSY

During our second visit to Lakiya, we had the opportunity to visit some villages in the area that remain unrecognized by the authorities. Throughout our time in these villages, we were continually overwhelmed by the positive attitudes of the women we encountered.

Origin part II Balance by BCXSY

We became increasingly inspired by the choice they have made to focus on their optimistic progress, rather than their more obvious hardships.

Origin part II Balance by BCXSY

Balance is our response to this optimism, that in the midst of adversity and misfortune there is a lasting element of proportion and beauty.

Origin part II Balance by BCXSY

Drawing from the surrounding landscape of the Negev Desert in both color and texture, each piece in Balance pushes the perceived confines of traditional woven dimensions and expected application of decorative elements.

Origin part II Balance by BCXSY

The rugs are the result of working within the boundaries of the Bedouin weaving practice, where it is only possible to weave long, narrow strips of material. The strips are then cut and repositioned to create non-traditional and innovative silhouettes that generate new and exciting placement possibilities within the interior. Balance embodies the possibility of finding a modern context for an ancient craft.

E15 DEBUTS NEW RELEASES BY DESIGNER STEFAN DIEZ AND PRESENTS INSPIRING NEW SHADES AND FABRICS FOR ITS COLLECTION

With a gallery style presentation e15 debuts its collection of new releases in April at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile 2011 in addition to the exhibition in its showroom on Via Tortona in Milan. For the new releases presentation in Milan e15 extends the successful collaboration with designer Stefan Diez, introducing the compact and versatile lounge chair EC04 LEO, a new upholstered and contract version of the chair CH04 HOUDINI with armrest and the complementing stool ST11 DASH to accommodate the EC03 EUGENE lounge chair.

THE LOUNGE CHAIR EC04 LEO

At Salone del Mobile 2011, e15 introduces EC04 LEO, a compact and versatile lounge chair showcased in Milan in fresh shades of nude, khaki, honey yellow and in the new European walnut veneer. Taking up the aesthetics and produc- tion technique of the side chair, EC04 LEO is a natural continuation of the CH04 HOUDINI seating family, reflecting its abstract organic form and the modern use in material. With a wide and comfortable seat shell that exudes lightness and leisure and with its small dimensions, EC04 LEO, also made from flexible lacquered oak or European walnut veneer is the perfect side and complementing small lounge chair. EC04 LEO is ideally suited for most living and public spaces, working as a complementing seating item for the sofa SF05 BESS or SF03 SHIRAZ, or as an individual piece on its own.

E15 by Stephen Diez - Leo

NEW UPHOLSTERED AND CONTRACT VERSION CH04 HOUDINI

With particular focus on the contract market, e15 introduces an upholstered version of the chair CH04 HOUDINI with a distinctive upholstered armrest, offering five fixed upholstered contract versions whilst providing for optimised costs and larger commissions. A wide range of fabrics and leather will also be available for more individual choices in the upholste- red version of the CH04 HOUDINI. The upholstery of the seat, inside back along with the armrest, offers ample com- fort and padding for CH04 HOUDINI whilst not covering the chair’s form and aesthetics. The upholstering and armrest padding respond to the special requirements of the contract market whilst also adding an artistic dimension to the chair. E15 offers its CH04 HOUDINI CONTRACT with armrest in upholstered combinations of contract proof Trevira CS, wool, cotton and soft, durable leather.

THE STOOL ST11 DASH

Complementing the comfortable and iconic EC03 EUGENE lounge chair, e15 introduces the stool ST11 DASH in Milan, also made from flexible oak- or European walnut-veneered and lacquered plywood. The rectangular stool, reflecting key details and proportions of EC03 EUGENE, takes up the seat height of the lounge chair as well as the rounded finishes of the seat in its front sides, offering perfect leg comfort. The optional seat cushion CU11 DASH S offers additional padding for the stool.

COLOURS AND FABRICS BY FARAH EBRAHIMI

In collaboration with designer Farah Ebrahimi, e15 introduces at Salone del Mobile 2011 a range of fresh shades and fabric combinations for the entire Stefan Diez seating series along with offering new fabrics and leather for upholstered products suitable for public and private spaces. Each shade of material and fabric was carefully selected with a variety of needs and moods in mind.

With the intention to create a subtle and elegant atmosphere while avoiding the generic, Farah Ebrahimi developed a new selection of colours and material surfaces for the e15 collection. Creating an unpredictable contrast to the existing shades of neon red and bright blue, a subtle and daring shade of nude, a utilitarian shade of khaki, a brassy shade of honey yellow, a dark shade of Umbra grey and luxurious European walnut interact and balance with the existing colour range of natural oak, white, black and grey in an inspiring and original way. Fabrics in various textures and patterns along with soft leathers in shades of cognac, olive and espresso compliment the range, creating a unique and enduring impres- sion with a variety of moods – from classic to modern – for the entire e15 collection.

Dip in Space by Matali Crasset and HEAD – Genève

Dip in Space by Matali Crasset

Milan 2011: visitors lower objects into pits of molten wax then hang them from the ceiling to solidify in this installation created by students of the Haute Ecole d’Art et de Design in Geneva at workshops with designer Matali Crasset and curator Alexandra Midal.

Dip in Space by Matali Crasset

Called Dip in Space, the room at Tortona Design Week has a sloping floor to accommodate the vats of wax beneath, with a round wooden structure and pulley system for dipping built round each one.

Dip in Space by Matali Crasset

The environment will change constantly as the week progresses and more parts are coated in red wax.

Photographs are by Baptiste Coulon.

Here are some more details from Head – Genève:

Third participation by Head – Genève in the Milan International Furniture Fair : the exhibition Dip in Space, a festive environment celebrating design created by its students in a workshop led by matali crasset and Alexandra Midal is to be found from 12 to 17 April in the heart of the vibrant Zona Tortona. Created during a series of workshops directed by matali crasset in 2010-2011, the exhibition Dip in Space brought together students from the Spaces and communication Masters in Design and the Bachelors courses in Fashion Design and Interior Architecture / Space Design.

Dip in Space by Matali Crasset

Although the design generally presented in Milan is evaluated according to functional criteria, Dip in Space offers a new approach to the means of creating and standardizing space. Left to its cyclothymias, Dip in Space is divided up into two worlds : the first, with glowing red magma set above the platform, represents the mind of the designer in full ferment, while the second invites visitors to experiment, in a fun and convivial way, with the invention and production of forms. They are invited to dip supports into wax-filled containers from which they withdraw objects, each one of them unique. The forms they produce are assembled in situ to constitute a collective work in progress. A quasi-organic space, Dip in Space celebrates the plasticity of matter and the amusing creation of forms.

Dip in Space by Matali Crasset

Throughout the exhibition, walls and objects will gradually blend together to form a single entity in which, from the clothing worn by the representatives to the cocktails served to visitors, the seating places/points and the projected images, everything combines to form a « total art work ». The continually metamorphosing environment illustrates how design is a place for individual, participatory and democratic inventiveness.

Dip in Space by Matali Crasset

A sensorial oasis of relaxation and calm, Dip in Space offers a fun and convivial interlude amid the frenzy of Milan during Design Week. Offbeat and festive, the exhibition encourages us to reconsider the issues of contemporary design by transcending the primacy of function in favour of experience.

Cabinet Bestiarium at Vertigo Bird

Cabinet Bestiarium at Vertigo Bird

Milan 2011: Slovenian lighting brand Vertigo Bird present new lamps by designers including Mathias Hahn, Uli Budde and A + A Cooren as part of Tortona Design Week in Milan.

Cabinet Bestiarium at Vertigo Bird

Hahn’s design, called Jinn, is based on the form of an oil or gas lamp, while Uli Budde’s Balloon design reflects light off a plate ballooning out of it’s cylindrical base.

Cabinet Bestiarium at Vertigo Bird

A + A Cooren’s Hippo lamp can be angled by changing the position of the shade on its magnetic base.

Cabinet Bestiarium at Vertigo Bird

Called Cabinet Bestiarium, the show presents the new collection in wooden cages with cut-out flora and fauna designed by Ljubljana studios Bevk Perovic Arhitekti and graphic designers Luks Lab.

Cabinet Bestiarium at Vertigo Bird

The information below is from Vertigo Bird and Bevk Perovic Arhitekti:

Vertigo Bird, a young Slovene lighting brand, is proud to present its new collection of lights during Milano Furniture Fair, at Opificio courtyard in Via Tortona 31, under a project title Cabinet Bestiarium. Cabinet Bestiarium project has been conceived by Bevk Perovic arhitekti in association with graphic designers Luks Lab, both from Ljubljana.

Cabinet Bestiarium at Vertigo Bird

The new Vertigo collection, including some items from previous seasons, is ‘imprisoned’ in 4 birdcage-like objects, taking over the small space in Via Tortona 31 Opificio courtyard.

Cabinet Bestiarium at Vertigo Bird

Directly inspired by the natural museum’s dioramas, each wooden ‘birdcage’ cabinet presents a series of lighting fixtures in a jungle-like setting, the natural environment of the Vertigo Bird’s Bird/Beast Chimeras, designed especially for the occasion by Luks Lab.

Cabinet Bestiarium at Vertigo Bird

New lights presented during this years’ Fair include proposals by international group of designers – Mathias Hahn (Jinn table lamps), A+A Cooren (Hippo – a collection of floor, table, wall and suspension lamps), Ulli Budde (Baloon table and wall lamps) and Bevk Perovic arhitekti (Bikini ceiling lamps), as well as brand new items from Vertigo’s Naked Collection, a collection of ‘anonimous’ lighting fixtures devised by Smoke Detektors. Some of the ‘oldies’ from previous collections will also be shown, complementing the Cabinet Bestiarium setting.

Cabinet Bestiarium at Vertigo Bird

JINN

Jinn is a floor and table lamp, based on the idea to create a reinterpretation of a classic decorative lamp comprising a base and lamp shade. In opposition to the traditional build of a central structure holding the shade and light source in place, Jinn is deconstructing this typology by removing the stem. The metal shade is supported by a glass piece that is mounted on top of the base. The light source itself is located in the base so that the light is reflected from the lamp shade and emits through the glass. Being reminiscent of oil or gas lamps the control for dimming and switching is positioned on the base of the lamp. Using the wheel on the side, the intensity of light can be adjusted in a very intuitive manner.

Design: Mathias Hahn
Material: glass, metal
Colours: white, warm grey

Cabinet Bestiarium at Vertigo Bird

BALLOON

Balloon owes elements of its form to the typical antique oil lamps and candle holders with a reflector placed behind the flame to reflect and direct the light. Besides, the natural occurrence of what we often consider the moon to be a light source (next to e.g. fire and the sun) although it is just a reflected light from the sun, gave further stimulus to work with idea of the indirect light. LED light source is situated inside lamp´s cylindrical base. Light shines upwards and enlightens the reflector, which tilts forwards, re-directing and reflecting a diffused glimmer of light. It is available in table and wall version.

Cabinet Bestiarium at Vertigo Bird

Through its simplicity and figurative character, the lamp leaves room for associations and fantasy – is it a balloon soaring into the air, a small glowing sun or an oversized light bulb?

Design: Uli Budde
Material: metal
Colours: white, yellow

HIPPO

As joyful as a hippo’s head and as playful as a magnet, Hippo is never exactly in the same position as everything in nature. Hippo is a series of lamps attached on a magnetic spindle. The rounded glass volume with the reflective metal calyx stays stable by the pull of magnetism.

Cabinet Bestiarium at Vertigo Bird

Hippo is unique, friendly, poetic and full of personality with endless possibilities of arrangements in the interior space. Easy to be set and changed by the user, it possesses a sculptural and modern presence with its soft and cozy diffused light.

Cabinet Bestiarium at Vertigo Bird

Available in ceiling, suspension, wall, table and floor versions, with an economic fluorescent bulb.
