Off The Wall Art

Recently captured street art in Hong Kong

The art scene in Hong Kong is an exercise in contradictions. While the city plays host to one of the most well respected and largest international art fairs in the world, very few Hong Kong galleries represent local artists and the city seriously lacks in fine art colleges. Knowledgeable natives often tell visitors in search of local culture that it’s best to skip the government-run Hong Kong Museum of Art and hit the sidewalk instead. On a recent trip to Hong Kong I took that advice, and below are a few works that caught my eye along the way.

HK-graf-1.jpg HK-graf-2.jpg

Hong Kong has a long history of street art and graffiti. Tags, throw-ups, stencils and stickers are legion throughout the area, but they appear most prominently in the Lin Hok Lane garden in Sheung Wan and down the side streets of Causeway Bay.

HK-graf-4.jpg HK-graf-5.jpg

One of the most famous Hong Kong street artists was Tsang Tsou Choi. The self-titled “King of Kowloon” Tsang painted calligraphy all over the peninsula, claiming royal lineage that entitled him to ownership of the area. When he died in 2007 at the age of 85, many tried to photograph or preserve his rants. But to date there are only four remaining, including a concrete pillar at Tsim Sha Tsui Star Ferry Pier, which was given a protective sheath. The rest have been sold off at high auctions in institutions that likely would have barred Tsang while he was alive.

HK-graf-3.jpg

Another controversial and prevalent graffito that has dotted Victoria Harbor since 2011 is the stencil “Who’s Afraid of Ai Weiwei?” by 23-year-old artist Tang Chin, AKA Tangerine. Chin’s stencils pose a reaction to the detention of Chinese contemporary artist and political activist Ai Weiwei on 3 April 2011 at Beijing Airport.

HK-graf-6.jpg HK-graf-7.jpg

While many of her original messages have been painted over by Hong Kong authorities, we did come across a “Death Ai Weiwei” stencil on a ladder street in Sheung Wan, revealing that there is still hostility toward the Chinese government’s treatment of the activist—and an underlying fear that the city’s freedoms are increasingly at risk.

Knockbox Coffee Company

Coffee obsession reaches new heights in this small Hong Kong café
KnockBox3.jpg

Given Hong Kong’s tradition of amalgamating cultures and cuisines, it’s no surprise that it’s embracing the craft coffee movement. In the quirky residential neighborhood of Sheung Wan in the Central district, I happily stumbled upon one of the city’s newest coffee shops, Knockbox Coffee Company—a three stool cafe with an intensely serious passion for java.

KnockBox1.jpg

The space is tiny, and shared with gown designer Cerise Yip, with odds and ends for sale ranging from Delta Blues Audio’s Tuba iPod tube amp to books and sunglasses. Occasionally hosting the work of local artists, Knockbox acts as an ambassador for Hong Kong’s hip.

Owners Patrick Tam and Frances Lam are young entrepreneurs dedicated to making the perfect cup. Our passionate barista Jonathan walked us through the coffees available that week—a global who’s who including La Ilusión Bourbon from Has Bean in Stafford, England; an Indonesian Blue Batak from Taiwan’s Caffé Artigiano (not to be confused with the Vancouver-based purveyor with the same name) that I ordered; an organic Bolivian Anjilanaka from Chicago’s Intelligentsia; and Panama’s Carmen Estate. The staff knows many of the roasters personally, and are extremely knowledgeable about the coffees they serve without being pretentious.

KnockBox2.jpg

Coffee selected, Jonathan asked which brewing method I preferred—in addition to espresso they offer a range of manual brewing methods, including AeroPress, a Hario Halogen Beam Heater syphon, and Hario pour over drip cones. The entire process—from beans to brewing—is taken very seriously at Knockbox. Water is heated and its temperature taken, beans appropriately ground, and once brewed tested by a refractometer to ensure its optimal preparation—and enjoyment. After you enjoy your cup you can head out to explore the neighborhood’s developing indy retail shops and restaurants.

Stiibu for Moustache

Italian artisanal leather goods with Hong Kong style
Stiibu_Moustache2.jpg

Combining western manufacturing with a bit of eastern flair, Italian leather-maker Stiibu launched today a collaboration with Hong Kong boutique Moustache. The appropriately timed line comes out before the biggest travel season of the year and has your needs covered from dopp kits and wallets to passport holders and baggage tags.

Stiibu_Moustache1.jpg

With pieces comprising a range of several textures and colors, these accessories take some refreshing risks rarely found in Italian leather working. We especially liked the tri-fold “Going Out” wallet, which has room for cash, cards, keys and coins. The thoughtful design and geometric styling add a sartorial bonus for the supple travel essential. Italian artisans sewed every stitch of the accessories, which are composed of deerskin, napa leather and Italian novalatta.

The multi-hued collection, a nod to the boldly colorful work produced by the Memphis Design Group in the 1980s, is available at Moustache in Hong Kong, and is scheduled to appear in Lane Crawford next month.
