Anger over cancelled orders as design retailer Dwell reopens

Furniture retailer Dwell to reopen

News: collapsed UK furniture retailer Dwell is to reopen five of its 23 stores following a deal with the company’s original founder – but furious customers of the old company are claiming their orders will not be honoured.

Dwell, which ceased trading on 20 June 2013 with the loss of 300 jobs, held an estimated £1 million of customer deposits when it went into administration.

The company’s Facebook page has been flooded with comments by customers saying they have lost money. “I phoned up this AM only to be told that the order I placed on 25th May is null and void,” wrote Mags Mckie. “£500 worth of orders deleted from my account,” commented Susan Lowe Barrie.

“I was waiting for 4 chairs to be delivered,” said Margaret Jones in another Facebook comment. “Phoned customer services today and was told would def not get the order now and should contact bank to claim back payment. Was told I could reorder from new company as chairs were in stock.”

Dwell announced on Wednesday that Aamir Ahmad, who founded the brand in 2003 but left in November 2012, had agreed a deal to rescue the company and save 150 jobs.

He said in a statement: “Our priority lies with the customers and suppliers who have been let down by the former management. We are working hard to try and resolve the issues, in particular outstanding customer orders.”

He added: “Although we are not legally obliged to, we are doing everything we can to find a solution for customers who have lost out.  Our primary goal is to help customer and suppliers regain their trust in the dwell brand.”

Ahmad advised customers with outstanding orders to check the company’s social media platforms for advice. However Dwell’s Twitter account said: “Please note we are no longer dwell Retail Ltd. Previous orders will not be fulfilled, as we are now a new company.”

Customers reacted angrily to the tweet. “I’ve just been told by customer services that they’re not honouring deliveries, but I can buy from the new company!” said Andrew Lansdell on Twitter yesterday. “I’m only a customer and am £857 short, what are you going to do about that?” asked another customer.

The operator of Dwell’s Twitter account appeared to feel sympathy for customers’ plight, writing: “F***ing snakes indeed. I didn’t get paid by them either.

Dwell reopened its online store this week and will reopen five high-street stores from Saturday 6 July at Tottenham Court Road, Westfield London, Westfield Stratford City, Lakeside shopping centre in Essex, and Barton Square in Manchester.

Dwell, which specialises in contemporary furniture, lighting and accessories, opened its first store in Balham, south London in 2003.

Here’s the announcement of the rescue from Dwell’s blog:

Dwell, the furniture retailer, has been saved from disappearing off British high streets thanks to its founder Aamir Ahmad returning to lead the company. Ahmad’s plan will save over 150 jobs and keep the business operating from at least five stores and the web.

From Saturday 6th July, dwell will reopen their stores in Tottenham Court Road, Westfield White City, Westfield Stratford, Barton Square in Manchester and Lakeside in Thurrock. Talks with other landlords are underway with a hope that additional stores and jobs can be saved. Dwell’s online store (www.dwell.co.uk) will also reopen on Thursday. Advice to customers who have outstanding orders will be available on the company’s social media platforms.

Ahmad founded dwell with his family and friends in 2003 and successfully grew it over 9 years, but along with his co-founders was replaced in November last year. He will be stepping back in to run the business as CEO. Ahmad comments: “Our priority lies with the customers and suppliers who have been let down by the former management. We are working hard to try and resolve the issues, in particular outstanding customer orders. Although we are not legally obliged to, we are doing everything we can to find a solution for customers who have lost out. Our primary goal is to help customer and suppliers regain their trust in the dwell brand.

Showcase Your Knack for Design and Architecture at Dwell

For the last 13 years, Dwell has provided design and architecture insights that are as practical as they are modern. “We remain true to our founding editor’s fruitbowl manifesto,” editor-in-chief Amanda Dameron attested. “It has everything to do with authentic design, as opposed to artificial environment.”

Dameron also said that her team is looking for content that covers fresh topics that readers weren’t expecting, and one of the best ways to distinguish your submission is to get behind a camera. “We put a lot of resources behind how we tell our stories visually. So when we’re reviewing initial ideas, having good pics always helps.”

Inside Scoop: Dwell Partners with American Society of Interior Designers

Dwell is looking inward for its latest partnership. We hear that the shelter magazine-turned-bicoastal media empire will announce tomorrow that it’s teaming up with the American Society of Interior Designers. With a membership that includes around 18,000 practicing interior designers and 10,500 students, the trade group will move its national conference to Dwell on Design, which caps off Dwell Design Week in Los Angeles. The leaders of 500 ASID chapters nationwide and board members of the organization will join the eighth annual installment of modernism-infused home tours, product demos, and presentations, set to begin on June 21, 2013 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

SCALE at Noho Design District

A Cool Hunting, Architizer and Dwell collaboration celebrating the newest in architectural design
EggCollectiveBradfordTileTable03.jpg

For this year’s Noho Design District, part of New York’s Design Week, we’ve teamed up with our friends at Architizer and Dwell to present SCALE, a collection of objects and prototypes that explore the relationship of furniture and architecture.

SCALE-Disco-Ball.jpg

Architects have been known to use furniture as a prototyping method for their creations and with this as our starting point we’ve collected works from architects and designers—some at the top of their game, others just starting out—including Snarkitecture, Bec Brittain, Katie Stout, Seth Keller, Studio DROR, Kiel Mead, Thaddeus Wolfe and more. From Jason Payne’s “Disco Ball” for Hirsuta to the process-driven “Sprue” candelabras by Fort Standard, we think the final collection captures some of the most interesting intersections of architecture and design today.

Dwell Wants Authenticity in Home Design

The world of design can be intimidating to some, but Dwell‘s team of editors strives to show the field’s friendlier, welcoming side.

Dwell has always been about showing real people in real homes,” said editor-in-chief Amanda Dameron. “We don’t send stylists, and we don’t want people to create an artificial idea of how they live in their home.”

With its recent expansion, the pub is wide open to ambitious freelancers — and photographers. “We put a lot of resources behind how we tell our stories visually. So when we’re reviewing initial ideas, having good pics always helps,” Dameron said.

Dwell‘s NYC Soiree

Michela O'Connor Abrams, president of Dwell, poses with James Russell of Bloomberg Media.

Dwell has landed in New York City, and to announce its newly expanded East Coast office, the magazine staff held a coming out party Tuesday night. A constant stream of dazzling architects, designers, retailers and media floated into the private Greenwich Village townhouse where the party was held to congratulate the newest executives publisher Brenda Saget Darling and executive editor Amanda Dameron.

The modern architecture glossy had been based in San Francisco, with editors flying back and forth from both coasts for the past 12 years. Although it has always had a strong presence in Manhattan, Dwell has now moved into its new offices in Midtown. According to Dwell President Michela O’Connor Abrams, a New York move has always been in the stars for the designer glossy. The plan was shelved, however, with the company being no exception to the economic downturn of the past four years. But now, Abrams declared, “We’re here, and we’re ready.”

Dwell founder and owner Lara Deam flashes a smile.

Owner and founder Lara Deam (who looked stunning in her hard-to-miss Stella McCartney blouse and Marc Jacobs skirt) shared her excitement for this change with the same Dwell DNA, stating, “It was time to develop deep roots in this city and begin to grow real relationships.” The staff got a great start at the soiree, as they were in great company all throughout the night.

Guests including designer Thom FiliciaDon Weinreich, of architecture firm Ennead, the Rich Brilliant Willing trio, and Robert McGarry of GCAM toured the 8-story townhouse renovated by Eric Kohler.

While munching on hors d’oeurves and sipping on Ketel One vodka, champagne and wine, visitors gave their two cents about the magazine’s expansion. While McGarry called it a “good move,” Weinreich expressed “curiosity” about the publication’s goals. The guys at Rich, Brilliant, Willing were already excited for Dwell‘s upcoming events, as well as the glossy’s change in flavor.

More glamorous events are something New Yorkers can definitely look forward to, according to Dwells newest digital accounts manager Ralston O’Neil. Congrats Dwell and welcome to the Big Apple!
