Details announced for Lisbon Architecture Triennale

Dezeen Wire:
details have been announced for the third edition of architecture festival the Lisbon Architecture Triennale, which will take place from 12 September to 15 December 2013 in the Portuguese capital under the title “Close, Closer”.

Curated by Beatrice Galilee, the triennale will present three exhibitions alongside a series of talks, conferences and events that examine the critical themes of architectural practice.

Galilee is also co-hosting an event with Dezeen to celebrate the design scene in the London Borough of Hackney. For more information click here.

CLOSE, CLOSER
12 September – 15 December 2013

Close, Closer, the third edition of the Lisbon Architecture Triennale examines the political, technological, emotional, institutional, and critical forms of global spatial practice. By questioning the terminology, inspirations, and inventions of other disciplines and their influences in an open forum, we draw the myriad authors of the contemporary city closer to new vital audiences and dialogues.

Led by chief curator Beatrice Galilee and curators José Esparza, Mariana Pestana, and Liam Young, the Triennale will provide a platform for emerging practitioners and protagonists whose work and interests are far from a traditional client-architect model. The exhibitions, conferences, talks, and fringe events organised by the curatorial team should introduce to the public, and a new generation of architects, this expansive and often unchartered field.

Close, Closer will present three exhibitions, one public programme, an e-publishing series, a student prize, and a Début Award for young architects, in addition to an established Lifetime Achievement Award. It will also introduce a number of small Crisis Buster grants that will be used to invest in longterm, civic, and entrepreneurial projects for Lisbon.

Each exhibition, event, or intervention will present a different strand of experimental spatial practice. These range from strategic political or social interventions, cutting edge digital technology to fiction, memory, performance to the role of museums, journals and theorists.

For three months from September 2013, the Lisbon Architecture Triennale will be a critical platform for the plurality of contemporary spatial practice. The events and exhibitions will introduce architecture as a discipline that is not exclusive to professionals or defined only by buildings, but rather as an expanding field with which, amongst others, sociologists, scientists, curators and artists are all dynamically and radically engaging.

Chief Curator: Beatrice Galilee
Curators: José Esparza, Mariana Pestana and Liam Young
Grafic Design: Zak Group

Dezeen Music Project: Gravity by Twin Pod Cloud Car

This brooding electro-pop song is by a UK duo called Twin Pod Cloud Car. Taken from their album Don’t Panic, Gravity combines a ferocious electronic beat with chant-like repeating vocal melodies and lyrics that provide, in the band’s own words, “a simple science lesson”.

Dezeen Music Project: Overpopulation by Jordan Mitchell

Jordan Mitchell is a man of wide-ranging musical talents. The first tracks of his we heard were soft, soothing acoustic guitar instrumentals (check out Filtered Sunshine, which we featured on Dezeen Music Project back in March). But these days he’s just as likely to send over glitchy, stuttering electronica like this excellent track called Overpopulation.

Design Academy Eindhoven “gives in to demands” of departed masters heads

Design Academy Eindhoven by Radio Nederland Wereldomroep

Dezeen Wire: three senior Design Academy Eindhoven teachers have agreed to return to their posts after claiming victory in their dispute with the school.

Jan Boelen, Joost Grootens and Louise Schouwenberg, the heads of Social Design, Information Design and Contextual Design respectively, resigned two weeks ago but will now return to the school in the new academic year.

“What we did not imagine when we resigned has finally happened under the pressure of students, teachers, colleagues, experts from the design field, the media, and former directors: the school has given in to all our demands for autonomy and freedom,” Schouwenberg told Dezeen.

She added: “Naturally we still have demands, such as seeking an artistic director focused on content.”

The three heads resigned following a row over the autonomy of the masters courses.

The teachers and the Design Academy Eindhoven released the following statement:

Design Academy Eindhoven puts interest of students first and reaches agreement with departed heads of the Master Programmes

On 5 July 2012, the three heads of the DAE Master Programmes, Jan Boelen (Social Design), Joost Grootens (Information Design) and Louise Schouwenberg (Contextual Design) resigned from their positions at Design Academy Eindhoven, out of discontent with the educational reform plans under development. Educational and organisational aspects were expected to prevail over the artistic autonomy and the content for which department heads and mentors are responsible. Moreover, according to the three heads, the plans would not be in accordance with the special character unique to a Master Programme of Design.

As the students, the tutors and the Board of the DAE all want to retain the three heads for their educational institute, they have been actively seeking a solution to break this impasse since their resignation. On Thursday 19 July an agreement was reached concerning the key points of contention.

Starting in the new academic year, Boelen, Grootens and Schouwenberg will return as Heads of Master Programmes under the conditions that were applicable to the Master Programmes within DAE to date. In the course of the year they will hold regular meetings about the future of the Master Programmes with Igor van Hooff, member of the Executive Board, and Dr T. Wagemakers, currently member of the Board of Trustees of DAE, who will join the Executive Board as interim director and be in charge of the Educational Reform portfolio. With the interest of its students always foremost, Design Academy Eindhoven will continue to develop its unique educational model.

All parties involved look forward to a positive extension of their collaboration, operating in full confidence that DAE will continue to be the artistic haven it always has been.

“Architects becoming more cautious over future workloads” – RIBA Future Trends Survey

Dezeen Wire:
the latest RIBA Future Trends Survey has shown that the majority of architects in the UK anticipate a decline in workload over the summer, particularly in the private housing sector.

The survey reports that London practices remain the most optimistic about future workloads, but that architects in the north of England and Northern Ireland expect a downturn in the coming months.

See past RIBA Future Trends Survey results here.

Read the full report from the RIBA below:

RIBA Future Trends Survey results for June 2012

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Future Trends Workload Index for June 2012 stands at +2, significantly down from +13 in the previous month. The positive upward trend that had been recorded this year has seen a reverse this month with architects becoming more cautious over future workloads.

The outlook across the UK remains mixed, with London the most optimistic region at +19, while the North of England and Northern Ireland at -19 and -25 respectively are the most pessimistic over levels of work for the next quarter.

The key element in the reduction in overall workload confidence is the private housing sector forecast which stands at -1 for June 2012, down from +16 in May 2012.

RIBA Director of Practice, Adrian Dobson said:

“Private housing has up until now remained the most resilient sector, supported by interest rates at historic lows, so the sharp decline in confidence for June could be a cause for concern if it continues.

“Unease about the private housing sector is driving down confidence amongst small practices. It may be a reflection of greater competition for housing work as other sectors continue to remain challenging, or an early indicator that the private housing sector is set to decline. The second scenario would strengthen calls from UK Construction for a more effective Government backed fiscal stimulus plan.”

Although the 2012 RIBA / Fees Bureau Employment and Earnings survey has shown some increase in architects’ earnings, the RIBA Future Trends Staffing Index for June remains consistent at -2 and we are yet to see any recovery in overall staffing levels.

In addition to the static staffing level, June 2012 saw the percentage of respondents reporting that they had personally been underemployed rise from 20% in May 2012 to 27%.
