Arne Jacobsen Station and Roman watches at Dezeen Watch Store

Arne Jacobsen - Station

Dezeen Watch Store: the Station and Roman watches based on iconic clocks by Danish modernist designer Arne Jacobsen are now available at Dezeen Watch Store.

Arne Jacobsen - Roman
Arne Jacobsen Roman watch

Each watch is a scaled-down replica of the original design, re-created by Rosendahl Watches according to Jacobsen’s design principles.

Jacobsen designed the original Station clock for electrical goods manufacturer Lauritz Knudsen in 1939. The watch version (main image) includes a distinctive minimal face with easy-to-read numbers and a circular motif that echoes the shape of the dial.

Arne Jacobsen - Roman

The elegant Roman watch pays homage to Aarhus City Hall clock, which Jacobsen designed in 1942, and features a round dial with distinctive Roman numeral indexes and a black waxed leather strap.

The strap is clamped between the watch case and a circular disk on the back. Rather than featuring a crown, the time is adjusted by pushing a pointed object into a dimple on the reverse.

Arne Jacobsen’s Station watch inspiration

Arne Jacobsen was one of the most influential Danish architects and designers of the twentieth century. His building and product designs – including the Egg and Swan chair – combine modernist ideals with a Nordic appreciation for naturalism.

Pebble by KiBiSi at Dezeen Watch Store

Dezeen Watch Store: Pebble is the first watch by Danish design studio KiBiSi and is now available in four colours at Dezeen Watch Store.

Pebble designed by KiBiSi

Pebble is the result of a collaboration between Jacob Juul of Danish watch brand Bulbul and KiBiSi. The design includes a distinctive asymmetric face that was inspired by the smooth contours of the pebbles found on Scandinavian beaches.

Pebble designed by KiBiSi

“Jacob asked us ‘why are all watches round or square?’, KiBiSi’s head of design Lars Larsen told Dezeen, “and we decided to use this question as the starting point for the design.”

He continued: “When you look at the watch the asymmetry is not the first thing that catches your eye. The shape feels familiar and not radical – it’s ‘off’ in a balanced and delicate aesthetic way.”

Pebble designed by KiBiSi

The timepiece, almost two years in the making, places emphasis on high quality craftsmanship and includes a double-sided Italian leather strap. “We wanted to make the product the brand and focus more on the piece” Lars said. “The watch becomes a piece of contemporary jewellery.”

Pebble designed by KiBiSi

The dial is complemented by a minimal face and a unique injection-moulded silicone loop. “The loop functions as understated brand information but remains eye-catching,” Lars added. “A traditional leather loop tends to soften and break over time; this solution is long lasting and durable.”

Pebble designed by KiBiSi

Other features include a stainless-steel case topped with scratch resistant sapphire glass and a Ronda Swiss-made movement with a ten-year battery life.

Pebble designed by KiBiSi

Entrepreneur Jacob Juul launched Bulbul in Copenhagen this year. The brand name can be translated as nightingale in the Middle East and India, but can also refer to a small songbird with a distinctive mohawk.

Pebble is available at Dezeen Watch Store in four variations for £290.

Stop2Go by Mondaine at Dezeen Watch Store

Stop2Go by Mondaine at Dezeen Watch Store

Dezeen Watch Store: the newest addition to our collection is the Stop2Go watch by Mondaine, a classic timepiece inspired by Swiss railway clocks.

Stop2Go by Mondaine at Dezeen Watch Store

Stop2Go incorporates a unique time keeping feature that is inspired by the mechanism of Swiss railway clocks. The sweeping red second hand completes a full revolution in 58 seconds, then waits for two seconds at the 12 o’clock position, allowing the minute hand to move on before the next rotation starts.

Stop2Go by Mondaine at Dezeen Watch Store

The timepiece includes a 41mm stainless steel case that fixes to the leather strap with steel braces. The easy-to-read, minimal design places emphasis on the markings and the distinctive red hand, which resembles a railway guard’s signalling disc.

Stop2Go by Mondaine at Dezeen Watch Store

The original Swiss Railway Clock was designed over 70 years ago by Zurich-born engineer Hans Hilfiker and has become a Swiss design classic, included in twentieth century design collections at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Design Museum in London.

Mondaine has been producing watches inspired by the original design since the mid-1980s when the brand was granted an official license from the Federal Swiss Railway.

When designing the watch, Morrison used Irving Penn’s iconic 1994 photographs of Miyake’s collection as a starting point. “I visited the 21-21 Design Site Exhibition of Penn’s photos for Miyake and was overwhelmed by how Penn managed to capture the spirit of Miyake’s clothes in his photos,” said Morrison. “I decided to do my best to capture some of that spirit for this new watch.”

Mutewatch atDezeen Watch Store

Mutewatch - Indigo Blue

Dezeen Watch Store: the popular touch-screen Mutewatch is now available in five new colours – and Dezeen Watch Store is one of the first retailers to stock them all.

Mutewatch - Nova Purple

Mutewatch was conceived when company founder Mai-Li Hammargren was living with a boyfriend who worked late night shifts. Just as he was getting to sleep in the early morning, her alarm would go off and wake him up. The solution? A silent alarm clock, worn around the wrist.

Mutewatch - Ivy Green

The design was inspired by the founders’ need for a personal wake-up alarm and the minimal-meets-retro aesthetic takes cues from Rubik’s Cube and classic Swedish design.

Mutewatch - Charcoal Grey

“We’re passionate about developing products for people who love simplicity and beautiful design,” said Mutewatch brand manager and partner Livia Moore. “We focus on the user experience, creating refined and useful tools for a mobile generation with the aim of simplifying people’s lives.”

Mutewatch - Pure Black

The integrated touch-screen allows the wearer to switch between functions by swiping across the display, tapping the top of each digit to activate the timer or alarm.

Mutewatch - Indigo Blue

Mutewatch plugs into a USB port and is fully charged within two hours. The device warns the wearer when the battery level is low and will automatically enter a hibernation mode.

Mutewatch - Charcoal Grey

Mutewatch features a fully adjustable wristband and is available in five colours: ivy green, nova purple, indigo blue, pure black and charcoal grey.

“I wanted to design a simple watch with an interesting surprise” – Marcel Wanders

Dezeen Watch Store: in this movie Dezeen filmed in Milan, Dutch designer Marcel Wanders describes the two different sides of the Dressed watch he designed for Alessi, which is available to buy now from Dezeen Watch Store

"I wanted to design a simple watch with an interesting surprise"

Wanders‘ Dressed watch has an outwardly understated design, but features an embellished decoration on the reverse side of the case that is hidden when the watch is being worn.

"I wanted to design a simple watch with an interesting surprise"

“We made these very simple, beautiful watches with an interesting surprise,” Wanders explains. “The design of the watch is pretty straightforward: the band makes a really simple connection to the core of the watch and we kept the dial very simple.”

"I wanted to design a simple watch with an interesting surprise"

However, the hour hand of the watch features a decorative “little twist”, Wanders goes on to explain, before turning the watch around to show that “on the back there is a fantastic decoration, which is very hidden.”

"I wanted to design a simple watch with an interesting surprise"

Wanders hopes that his design will stand the test of time. “[We made] something that is, I hope, an evergreen, something that lasts forever,” he says. “Because I think that’s what watches are, they are about time.”

“With too many contemporary watches you can’t tell what time it is” – Tom Dixon

Interview: in this exclusive interview designer Tom Dixon tells us why he decided to design his first watch – and how he wanted to make it easy to read the time (+ movie).

Block Watch by Tom Dixon

“We’ve spent a lot of time doing lighting over the last ten years, and also more recently furniture, and now we’ve decided it’s time to also do accessories,” says Dixon, speaking in the Tom Dixon showroom at The Dock in north-west London.

Block Watch by Tom Dixon

“I’m trying to produce something with an expressive neutrality,” he says. “I tend to try and work out what I can strip out without losing character.”

Block Watch by Tom Dixon

The result is Block Watch, which features a square case stamped out of stainless steel or brass. The watch face is circular, with etched numerals and markers. The watch’s hour, minute and second hands are powered by a high-quality Swiss movement.

Block Watch by Tom Dixon

“I tend to try and work out what I can strip out without losing character,” says Dixon, explaining his design philosophy. “A watch has really got to be round if it’s analogue, because the hands sweep round. I wanted to make sure you could tell the time – because with all too many contemporary watches you can’t tell what time it is. And I wanted to set it in a square because the strap has to go to a square anyway.”

Block Watch by Tom Dixon

The watch is available in either stainless steel or rose gold (plated) with matching mesh straps, or in brass with a chunky brown leather strap.

The mesh strap is inspired by vintage TV detective Kojak, Dixon says. “It’s got this chain link bracelet, which I guess is a reference to when I was growing up – Kojak, maybe.”

He adds: “It’s just the minimal elements you need to make a watch all reduced to their bare essentials and, I hope, still expressive enough to be something you want to buy.”

Block Watch by Tom Dixon is available to preorder now on Dezeen Watch Store with free worldwide shipping. Prices start at £166.67 excluding VAT.
