Exhibitor: Fabriek McCabe
Project title: McKano collection

Fabriek McCabe is a designer and furniture maker. It is introducing its latest homeware collection, named McKano, as part of VDF’s collaboration with Ventura Projects.

The McKano collection comprises two chairs and a desk made from oak. It was born from Fabriek McCabe’s ambition to create space-saving furniture with sustainable materials, while meeting a demand for “old school joinery in a modern day setup”.

Its use of oak ensures the furniture is sturdy yet lightweight, and is intended to spotlight the strength of the material. The three pieces are all complete without unnecessary details, retaining focus on the handmade joints.

Exhibitor: Fulvio Morella
Project title: Square the Circle

Fulvio Morella is an Italian artist that uses the craft of woodturning to create contemporary products that “cross the border between design and art”.

The artist’s latest series is a collection of wooden plates, named Square the Circle, which he is presenting at VDF x Ventura Projects collaboration.

Each of the plates is square in shape, and features a circular inlay at its centre that is made of copper or steel to contrast with the wood.

According to Morella this form is designed to break convention, and demonstrate how materials and shapes usually “considered so different that they cannot coexist” can work harmoniously together.

Tunnel 29 exhibition features design for post-apocalyptic world

Tunnel 29 by Centre for Creativity for VDF x Ventura Projects

Slovenia’s Centre of Creativity looks beyond the present in its Tunnel 29 exhibit, which is on show as part of the VDF x Ventura Projects collaboration.

Exhibitor: MAO / Centre for Creativity
Project title: Tunnel 29, design for a post-apocalyptic world

Centre for Creativity is an interdisciplinary platform in Slovenia that connects, showcases and supports development of the country’s creative sector.

It is presenting a selection of 30 products by Slovenian designers during VDF’s collaboration with Ventura Projects in a dystopian exhibition called Tunnel 29.

Each project in Tunnel 29 was selected from an open call that invited designers to imagine a dark future where the natural environment has been destroyed, and life continues in a controlled, artificial environment.

Responses range from DIY furniture made of recycled plastics and objects made from invasive plants species and salvaged scrap metal.

According to the MAO, it asks viewers to reflect on the question: “how are the efforts to tackle such reality reflected in the design for tomorrow?”.

Kodai Shimizu's home appliances combine craft with technology

Craft-Techmen Project by Kodai Shimizu for VDF x Ventura Projects

Kodai Shimizu is presenting Craft-Techmen Project, a series of hand-sewn home appliances, for the VDF x Ventura Projects collaboration.

Exhibitor: Kodai Shimizu
Project title: Craft-Techmen Project

Kodai Shimizu is a Japanese designer and Design Academy Eindhoven graduate. He is presenting one of his latest proposals, the Craft-Techmen Project, as part VDF x Ventura Projects.

Craft-Techmen Project is a series of home appliances, ranging from speakers to hairdryers, which combine craft and technology.

Each product relies on hand-sewn threads that are conductive and function as toggle switches. For example, the threads inside the speaker change volume, while they alter temperature on the hairdryer.

The project responds to the unsustainable trend of mass consumption, and increasingly complicated home appliances that must be discarded when they are broken. By using thread, each appliance is more easily dismantled and repaired.
